Maria (2024) is Pablo Larraín’s dramatic reimagining of opera singer Maria Callas’s final days in 1970s Paris, starring Angelina Jolie. It is a biographical drama, not a documentary or a complete account of Callas’s life.
What is Maria (2024) about?
The film follows Callas during the last period of her life in Paris, revisiting her experiences through memories, relationships and singing. The Venice Biennale describes it as her life relived and reimagined in her final days; Netflix likewise presents it as a reimagining of that period. La Biennale di Venezia’s film listing and Netflix’s title page identify the work as a 2024 drama.
That limited time frame matters: this is not a cradle-to-career biography of Callas. The film uses a stylized, subjective approach to her final period rather than setting out to document her life comprehensively.
Is Maria a true story?
It is based on the real person Maria Callas, but it is a dramatic interpretation, not a documentary. The film imagines her final days and presents memories and personal experiences as drama. The Associated Press review describes it as more dream than history lesson, an assessment of its style rather than a claim that any particular scene is invented or inaccurate. Viewers looking to verify a specific historical detail should check it against independent biographical sources.

Who plays Maria Callas, and who made the film?
Angelina Jolie plays Callas. Pablo Larraín directed the film and Steven Knight wrote the screenplay. The Venice Biennale lists Pierfrancesco Favino, Alba Rohrwacher, Haluk Bilginer, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Stephen Ashfield and Valeria Golino among the principal cast, alongside Jolie.
The Biennale lists the film at 123 minutes, with English and Greek languages, and Italy, Germany and the United States as production countries. Those are the festival’s published specifications. Larraín’s own description of Callas as having a “unique, beautiful, and tormented” life is the director’s perspective, not an independent biographical conclusion.

What kind of film should viewers expect?
Expect a performance-led biographical drama with an operatic, theatrical sensibility, not a conventional documentary or a neutral history lesson. AP critic Lindsey Bahr praised Jolie’s performance and the film’s style, calling it “a biopic as opera.” That is a critical characterization, not a production category or historical endorsement. If your priority is a fact-based overview of Callas’s entire life, this film’s focus on her last days makes it an incomplete source on its own.
Where can you watch Maria?
Netflix announced a US rollout of select theatrical screenings beginning November 27, 2024, followed by streaming on Netflix from December 11, 2024. Those dates apply to the announced US release, not necessarily to other countries. Netflix’s current page lists the film and says it can be downloaded, but availability may vary by country and change over time. Check the title in your local Netflix catalog for current access.

How to distinguish it from other films called Maria
This article covers Larraín’s 2024 drama starring Jolie. It is not Maria by Callas, Tom Volf’s earlier documentary, or Being Maria, Jessica Palud’s 2024 film about actress Maria Schneider. When comparing screen works about Callas, look at the period covered, whether the work uses dramatic reenactment or archival documentary material, whose perspective shapes the account, and whether historical claims are independently corroborated.
