In 2023, Los Angeles Magazine reported that The Late Late Show with James Corden cost an estimated $60 million to $65 million a year to produce while “netting less than $45 million.” Those anonymously sourced figures imply a substantial annual shortfall, commonly summarized as up to about $20 million—but they were not confirmed in audited CBS accounts.

What the reported figures say

Brian Stelter’s 2023 Los Angeles Magazine report attributed its financial figures to “well-placed sources.” It said the show was costing $60 million to $65 million annually to produce and was “netting less than $45 million.” The report did not define the accounting basis for “netting.”

Measure Reported amount What it means
Annual production cost $60 million to $65 million, according to anonymous sources cited by Los Angeles Magazine in 2023 An attributed estimate, not a disclosed CBS account.
Annual netting Less than $45 million, according to the same report The report does not specify the accounting definition or provide an audited figure.
Implied annual shortfall Roughly $15 million or more on the stated bounds; often summarized as up to about $20 million A subtraction based on the reported cost and netting figures, not a confirmed annual loss figure.

The arithmetic explains the headline estimate: costs starting at $60 million against netting below $45 million imply a gap of at least roughly $15 million. The frequently repeated “$20 million” is a headline-level approximation, not a precise loss figure established by published CBS financial statements. The original report is the source for both inputs.

Was the show really losing CBS $20 million every year?

That cannot be stated as a verified accounting fact from the available reporting. The estimate rests on anonymous-source figures, and “netting” is not explained in enough detail to establish exactly what revenue, costs, or other accounting items the comparison includes. No official CBS disclosure in the cited coverage substantiates the specific annual estimate.

So the accurate formulation is that the show was reported to have a potential annual shortfall approaching $20 million. It would overstate the evidence to say CBS or James Corden confirmed that the program definitively lost $20 million each year.

When Corden left the show

Corden announced in April 2022 that he would leave The Late Late Show in 2023, after hosting it since 2015, according to CBS News. The final episode aired on April 28, 2023, The Independent reported.

The reported financial estimate does not establish why Corden decided to leave. His departure was announced as a planned exit, and the figures alone do not show that the alleged shortfall caused it.

Does “most unpopular” describe what the figures prove?

No. The financial report concerns estimated costs and netting; it does not measure audience approval or establish that Corden was the “most unpopular” late-show host. That phrase in the original headline is not supported by the financial figures discussed here, so it should not be treated as a documented ranking.
