Creed and Nickelback are back in the live-event and online conversation, with returning fans, younger listeners and meme-makers all part of the story.

“Butt rock” has returned to view through more than memes. Creed and Nickelback are again part of the live-event calendar, their songs circulate online and their catalogs have drawn renewed listening. The audience is mixed: some people join in for the joke, some original fans have come back, and younger listeners are discovering the music. That visibility signals commercial demand—not a unanimous critical reappraisal.

What the revival actually includes

“Butt rock” is a loose cultural label, not a standardized genre category. In coverage of the current wave, “revival” describes several things happening at once: reunion tours, cruises and festivals, increased catalog listening, radio play, social-media circulation and renewed media attention. Those developments overlap, but they are not interchangeable. A meme can introduce a song to someone; a stream does not establish that person’s motive; and a large festival crowd does not prove that every attendee has become a devoted fan.

Rolling Stone’s July 21, 2025 feature describes an ecosystem of large tours, Instagram jokes, sold-out cruises, a land festival, streaming increases, dance parties and bootleg merchandise. Its reporting captures the tension at the heart of the revival: humor helps keep the bands visible, while some people are also buying tickets because they genuinely want to hear the songs live. The joke may bring attention; it cannot explain every ticket purchase. Rolling Stone’s feature

Why Creed’s return looks like more than a meme

Touring grew from a reunion cruise into arena dates

Creed’s 2024 return had a live-business foundation. A reunion cruise sold quickly, a second cruise was added, and the band moved into amphitheater touring. Strong initial sales contributed to the addition of arena dates, according to trade reporting published July 18, 2024. That sequence gives the revival a measurable presence beyond online jokes: promoters saw enough demand to expand the run. The trade report

Creed’s longtime agent at UTA, Ken Fermaglich, described buyers as both nostalgic listeners and people who had never seen the band. He told the trade publication: “The consumers are out there and want to connect with the music, whether it’s on the nostalgia side for the fan that was aware of it from years ago, or the newer fan that’s never gotten to see them.” The article also reported younger buyers in ticketing data and discovery through social media. Those are observations reported by the article and its interviewees, not a comprehensive demographic survey; available evidence does not establish the proportions of older and younger fans.

Listening figures show a substantial catalog footprint in 2024

Luminate figures reported by the trade article put Creed’s official on-demand song streams at 263 million from December 29, 2023, through June 27, 2024. The same report said Creed songs received 31,000 U.S. terrestrial and satellite radio plays during the first six months of 2024. These are historical totals for those specified periods, not current or recurring annual figures. They show that listening and radio exposure accompanied the touring story, but do not identify why individual people listened. Source and reporting context

Sports and event programming added routes back to the songs

The trade report also noted that the Texas Rangers used “Higher” as an unofficial anthem during their 2023 World Series run, bringing the song into fresh sports-media circulation. Cruises, festivals, touring and social discovery can reinforce one another: an event makes the band visible, a clip or joke sends listeners to the catalog, and renewed recognition can make a live show more appealing. The available reporting supports those as plausible, overlapping routes—not a proven single cause of the revival.

What a festival crowd can—and cannot—tell us

At Summer of ’99 and Beyond at Alpine Valley, a Washington Post reporter estimated attendance at more than 20,000 in a July 28, 2025 on-site review. That is the reporter’s event estimate, not an audited ticket-sales figure. The review read the gathering as evidence that nostalgia can make an unfashionable sound commercially viable, while also retaining critical distance about the bands’ musical merits and the limits of nostalgia. It is one critic’s interpretation, not a settled verdict on the music or its audience. The Washington Post’s review

Nickelback’s documentary revisits the band’s public image

For Nickelback, the documentary Hate to Love provides another strand of the story: the band telling its own account after years of mockery. In a GRAMMY.com interview about the film, bassist Mike Kroeger said, “People will create the narrative if you don’t supply it.” The documentary’s perspective on the group’s career and backlash is part of the wider conversation about reputation, but the interview does not show that the film alone caused renewed interest. Popularity has not settled the argument about the music

Commercial demand, cultural visibility and critical esteem answer different questions. A successful tour shows that enough people will pay to attend; streaming and radio figures show listening within defined periods. Neither demonstrates that critics have reversed their judgments or that listeners agree about the songs. The Washington Post review, for instance, acknowledged the scale of the crowd while questioning the music and the power of nostalgia. The revival is better understood as renewed access, attachment and attention than as proof of universal vindication.

Brad Hardin, iHeartMedia’s COO of national programming, offered one explanation for the songs’ broad reach: “They had big songs, and those records crossed over to pop radio.” That crossover helps explain why the catalog can still be recognizable outside its original rock audience; it does not erase the mockery that became part of the bands’ public reputations.

A relevant way to revisit the catalog

Creed’s official site announces a 25th-anniversary edition of Weathered, newly remastered and expanded on 2-LP vinyl, CD and digital, with four bonus tracks. The site describes it as the album’s first vinyl release and advertises an exclusive “Sunspot” pressing alongside other color variants. Edition details and availability can change, so check the official Creed site for current information before seeking a particular pressing.
