Lily-Rose Depp found Orlok scarier than the trained rats; Emma Corrin said the rats affected her more. Nicholas Hoult described the set as imposing and said Robert Eggers’s atmosphere, combined with Skarsgård’s performance, made it easy to be scared.
What did the cast say about seeing Orlok?
The cast’s accounts describe different fears in different situations—not a single reaction shared by everyone.
Lily-Rose Depp: Orlok was scarier than the rats
In a Rotten Tomatoes cast interview, Depp said she found Skarsgård in the Orlok look scarier than the trained rats. Reacting to him, she said, “You’re so scary. Oh my God.” She explained that working with the character meant getting more up close and personal with him.
Emma Corrin: the rats made a stronger impression
Corrin described seeing Skarsgård as “insane,” but said she was more affected by being close to the rats. Her account makes clear that Depp’s response was not a universal cast reaction.

Nicholas Hoult: an imposing atmosphere
Hoult told The Independent that Eggers created an imposing atmosphere on set. “Then you add this brilliant performance by Bill playing this terrifying character, and it’s a heightened reality that is very easy to be scared in,” he said. His description links the sense of fear to both the performance and the atmosphere of the production.
How did Skarsgård and Eggers approach the character?
Skarsgård described the role as unusually intense and difficult to inhabit. In a conversation with Eggers for AnOther Magazine, he said, “I’ve never been more terrified of a role and probably won’t be again. The whole journey was so intense.” He also said the character felt abstract from himself and made him uncomfortable.

Skarsgård had a month before filming in Prague to rehearse and discuss the role. He recorded many voice attempts as he tried to deepen it. Eggers said the transformation became clear when Skarsgård wore the complete makeup and costume for a camera test: he recalled that the actor looked in the mirror and called it the scariest experience of his life. Eggers said Skarsgård then needed little additional physical business. As he put it, “The idea with this film was to come back around to a scary vampire again – a monster.”
What made Orlok’s look demanding to wear?
Costume designer Linda Muir told Vogue that Orlok’s design drew on Transylvanian nobility around 1590 and portraits of the Esterházy family. The character had one costume, worn with or without a large cloak.
The cloak was heavy. Muir and makeup designer David White developed a harness to make it appear to float and let Skarsgård get out of it quickly. Muir said the prosthetic makeup and clothing left him “just roasting” on set. That practical discomfort is distinct from the cast’s descriptions of being frightened by the character.

These interviews support the narrower claim that some cast members found Orlok or the atmosphere frightening. They do not establish that filming was literally unsafe, or that every co-star was scared. Hoult’s account concerns an imposing mood; Depp and Corrin describe different reactions to Orlok and the rats.
