In Robert Eggers’s 2024 Nosferatu, Ellen Hutter’s connection to Count Orlok begins in childhood, long before she marries Thomas. The film frames it as a supernatural bond that returns as terror and obsession—not a simple, mutual romance. Eggers calls it a “demon lover” story and says it is “not so much love, it’s obsession.” The deeper meaning is open to interpretation, but the film’s focus on Ellen’s isolation, desire, and limited power makes the bond more than a monster’s attack.
What is Ellen’s connection to Count Orlok?
The connection is supernatural within the film’s story. Eggers opens with Ellen as a child calling out for help; Orlok answers. That encounter establishes a bond before Ellen’s marriage, and it returns in adulthood as a source of fear and fixation. Eggers described his version as Ellen’s story “from the very beginning,” shifting its center toward her rather than presenting her chiefly as the wife waiting for Thomas to return. ABC News reported Eggers’s comparison with the 1922 film.
This is a significant change in emphasis from F. W. Murnau’s 1922 German film. ABC’s report says Murnau’s Ellen meets the vampire in the third act, whereas Eggers begins with the childhood encounter. The Directors Guild of America describes Eggers’s film as a resurrection of Murnau’s work; that connection does not mean the 2024 film’s entire Ellen–Orlok backstory is present in the earlier version. The DGA’s feature on Eggers and the film provides that context.
Is Ellen in love with Orlok, or is he possessing her?
Eggers’s own description cautions against calling the relationship a straightforward love story. “The archetypal motif is a demon lover story. It’s not so much love, it’s obsession,” he told Vanity Fair. That is the director’s framing of the dynamic, not proof that Ellen and Orlok share a healthy or equal romance. The erotic charge of the bond coexists with predation and coercion; Ellen’s distress should not be mistaken for consent.

The film leaves room to consider how desire and supernatural influence overlap, but it does not require viewers to settle on a single psychological explanation. Orlok’s hold can be understood as literal supernatural menace within the plot, while its emotional force also reflects the fear and shame surrounding Ellen’s experience. The two readings can coexist without making the connection reciprocal.
Why does Ellen’s isolation matter?
Eggers describes Ellen as someone who senses “the shadow side of life” but lacks language for it and is misunderstood by those around her. In TIME, he said, “She’s an outsider. She has this understanding about the shadow side of life that is very deep, but she doesn’t have language for that. She’s totally misunderstood and no one can see her.” That makes her isolation central to the horror: she experiences something powerful but cannot readily explain it or gain recognition for it.

One interpretation is that Orlok gives monstrous form to an inner life Ellen’s society refuses to acknowledge. Her connection can then be read as both an external supernatural threat and a figure for desire, shame, and the cost of being denied a voice. This is a thematic reading, not a confirmed explanation that the supernatural events are merely symptoms or imagination. The film’s premise remains supernatural even as it invites psychological interpretation.
Costume designer Linda Muir has also described Ellen as haunted from childhood in this adaptation. Muir says the costumes were designed to suggest fragility, youth, naivete, and sexuality—qualities that sharpen the tension between how others perceive Ellen and the intensity of what she experiences. Those visual choices support the film’s emphasis on vulnerability, but they do not reduce her to a passive figure or establish a clinical diagnosis.

The low-light imagery reinforces the story’s uncertainty and dread. Cinematographer Jarin Blaschke has described restricting the palette and shaping tones so scenes remain legible in darkness. The visual approach lets night feel oppressive without making the action simply unreadable; it places Ellen’s bond with Orlok in a world where threat, desire, and fear are difficult to separate at a glance.
Eggers has written that folktales, fables, and myths endure because they continue to carry meaning. That broad idea helps explain why this adaptation can sustain more than one reading, but it does not establish a single folklore rule behind every element of the film. The relationship is best understood as Eggers’s particular reworking of the vampire story, centered on a woman haunted from childhood and unable to make her experience fully understood.
