Spoilers: Danny Ocean’s crew does not beat François Toulour by chance. Their apparent missteps are part of a setup arranged with master thief Gaspar LeMarque: Toulour steals a replica of the Imperial Coronation Egg, while the real egg has already been moved. The ending also reveals that LeMarque is Europol investigator Isabel Lahiri’s estranged father.
Why does the crew return to stealing?
After the Las Vegas casino robbery in Ocean’s Eleven, Terry Benedict tracks down Danny and the crew and demands his money back with interest. Much of their share is already gone, so Danny reunites the group and takes them to Europe to earn enough to repay him. Benedict’s demand—not a fresh desire for a contest—is what gets the story moving.
How does the Night Fox become part of the problem?
François Toulour, the thief known as the Night Fox, tells Benedict that Ocean’s crew carried out the earlier casino robbery. He then challenges Danny to prove who is the better thief. The contest seems to offer the crew a way to meet Benedict’s demand, but Toulour’s challenge also puts their pride and reputation at stake.
Meanwhile, Europol investigator Isabel Lahiri follows the European thefts. She recognizes the crew’s involvement and sees that Rusty has used an idea she had once shared with him. Her investigation is personal as well as professional: she and Rusty were partners before their relationship ended.

What really happens with the Fabergé egg?
The crew’s attempt to steal the Imperial Coronation Egg becomes tangled with arrests and a scheme in which Tess poses as Julia Roberts. Later, Toulour explains how he got past the museum’s laser security and took the egg. He believes this proves he has beaten Danny.
That victory is an illusion. Toulour has taken a replica. Danny and Rusty learned from LeMarque that the real egg had been moved in a military-style bag, so the museum theft was never the decisive win Toulour thought it was.

Why does the movie’s plan seem so confusing?
The late flashback changes how the audience should read much of the apparent chaos. The crew knew about the plan; Tess, Isabel, and Toulour did not. With that distinction in mind, the crew’s apparent mistakes and narrow escapes are part of a performance meant to keep Toulour confident and the deception intact. The film withholds this context until late, so events can look like failures before their purpose becomes clear.

Danny wins the contest, and Toulour’s payment goes to Benedict, satisfying the debt at the center of the plot. Rusty then takes Isabel to meet LeMarque, revealing that the master thief is her father and that they have been separated since she was a child. Their meeting gives Isabel and Rusty’s storyline a personal resolution. In the closing visual joke, Toulour is disguised as a gardener near Benedict.
