Rebecca Romijn had raised the issue earlier, saying in July 2025 that the script was still being written and she did not know whether her own filming was finished. Those statements point to an evolving production process; they do not establish that the film is in trouble or that the entire cast shared her uncertainty.
What Rebecca Romijn said while filming was underway
At San Diego Comic-Con in July 2025, Romijn was asked whether she had finished filming as Mystique. She said, “The script hasn’t — they haven’t finished writing it,” then added that the work had been “very, very fun” and that “we don’t know yet.” She said the filmmakers kept details close to the vest to maintain secrecy. Her comments describe her understanding at that point in production. Her uncertainty about whether she had finished filming should not be read as evidence that other cast members were equally unsure, or that the production lacked a plan.
The directors later confirmed the script was unfinished when shooting began
In a September 2, 2026 Associated Press interview, Joe and Anthony Russo confirmed that Doomsday went into shooting without a completed script. The project had originally been conceived as Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and was substantially retooled after Jonathan Majors was dropped from the franchise; the Russos later joined the changed project. The AP’s account also said the brothers were finishing scoring and editing Doomsday while beginning early, or “soft,” preparation for Avengers: Secret Wars: Associated Press interview.

That later confirmation supports the central point: the film was shot before its script was complete. It does not mean there was no script at all, nor does it by itself show whether the evolving script created practical problems on set.
How Joe Russo described the writing and rehearsal process
Joe Russo described the script as “a living organism” and said the directors are “improvisation-based, rehearsal-based.” He explained that they like to see what actors bring to their characters, sometimes meeting performers only days or weeks before shooting their scenes, and said “that’s when the magic happens.” TheWrap published those comments on September 2, 2026: TheWrap’s interview report.

This is the directors’ account of their approach, not independent evidence that the method succeeded or that the finished film will benefit from it. It offers context for how they chose to work, while leaving the outcome to the completed movie.
What the production updates do—and do not—show
The reporting establishes an unfinished script at the start of shooting, Romijn’s uncertainty about her own filming status in July 2025, and the Russos’ later description of post-production and early preparation for the next film. It does not establish that editing is going badly, that the release is endangered, or that an unfinished script caused a release-date change.

The Independent reported in July 2025 that Disney had moved the announced release date from May 1, 2026, to December 18, 2026. That date change is a separate fact; the report does not prove the script situation caused it: The Independent’s report.

A film entering production without a finished script can reasonably invite questions about how scenes and dialogue will evolve during filming. Romijn’s account gave that concern a cast-side voice, and the directors’ later confirmation showed that the script was indeed incomplete when shooting began. But the available statements do not document specific set challenges, describe the extent of revisions, or demonstrate a production crisis. The clearest distinction is between a confirmed unfinished script and unverified claims about what that meant for the film.
