Games Workshop said female Custodians had existed “since the first of the Ten Thousand were created.” The announcement prompted visible online criticism framed by some as a “woke” change, but contemporary coverage did not measure the views of Warhammer players as a whole.
What the 2024 codex added
The 10th-edition Codex: Adeptus Custodes features Calladayce Taurovalia Kesh in a short story and refers to the character with female pronouns. In its April 15, 2024 report, Wargamer described Kesh as the first definitive confirmation in published lore of women among the Custodes.
Games Workshop then stated: “Since the first of the Ten Thousand were created, there have always been female Custodians.” The company presented Kesh not as a newly invented exception to the faction’s history, but as confirmation of its canon position.
Why Custodes lore is different from Space Marine lore
Custodes and Space Marines are separate factions with different fictional creation processes. Games Workshop’s January 16, 2026 Custodes FAQ says Custodians are taken as infants and individually remade through an arcane, bespoke process. Some were drawn from the sons of patriarchal noble houses, but the company says noble daughters could also be recruited and that other recruitment methods existed.

- 6 plastic miniatures for Warhammer: The Horus Heresy
- Add elite warriors to your Legio Custodes army
- Take down anything that threatens the Emperor with expertly wielded guardian spears
- Resplendent in ornate armour and equipped with finely crafted weaponry
- These miniatures require assembly and are supplied unpainted
That account is not the Space Marine origin story. In the same FAQ, Games Workshop says, “There are no female Adeptus Astartes.” The female Custodian reveal therefore does not establish female Space Marines; the company treats the groups’ recruitment and transformation as distinct in its lore.
For Custodians, the FAQ states: “There is no difference in combat efficacy between a male Custodian and female Custodian.” This is a statement about the fictional setting, not a real-world comparison or measurement.

What the “woke” controversy was—and what it does not prove
Some online critics described the inclusion of female Custodians as “woke”; “Femstodes” and “Wokehammer” also appeared as debate labels. These terms reflect the framing of the argument, not neutral names for the lore change. Tech Times’ April 16, 2024 coverage described an uproar, while PC Gamer’s April 19 report characterized the reaction as a vocal minority and said most players appeared to move on to discussing the new rules.
Those are reports of a visible online reaction, not a representative poll. The available coverage does not establish what percentage of players supported or opposed the change, or that gamers broadly shared either view.

Keep the 2024 lore reveal separate from newer codex releases
This controversy concerns the 10th-edition codex released in 2024. Games Workshop described a newer Codex: Adeptus Custodes on September 25, 2026, combining Warhammer 40,000 and Horus Heresy ranges in one book. That later product context does not change what the 2024 story introduced or the company’s explanation of its lore.
If you are looking up a codex for the rules or hobby range, check the edition and current availability: a later book is not the same publication as the 10th-edition codex at the center of the 2024 discussion. Games Workshop’s September 25, 2026 overview describes the newer book.
