War of the Worlds (2025), directed by Rich Lee and starring Ice Cube, is a screen-centered alien-invasion thriller about a government computer security analyst caught in an attack. Critics have broadly panned its execution, especially its computer-interface presentation and prominent product placement. It may appeal as a curiosity, but the available critical evidence does not support recommending it as a suspenseful, accessible take on H.G. Wells’s story.
What is War of the Worlds (2025) about?
This is Rich Lee’s 2025 film, not Steven Spielberg’s 2005 adaptation or the 1953 movie. Ice Cube plays Will Radford, a U.S. government computer security analyst whose daily life is disrupted by an alien attack. The story also points toward secrets the government may be hiding, according to the synopsis listed by Rotten Tomatoes.
Prime Video describes the film as a present-day story concerned with technology, surveillance, and privacy. Its defining formal choice is to mediate much of the action through digital screens and interfaces. That approach makes the protagonist’s work environment part of the invasion story, but it also places a heavy burden on the interfaces to make events outside the screen feel immediate and clear.
Why are critics panning the film?
The central complaint is that the screen-based format does not create enough tension to justify how much of the film it occupies. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus calls it “an inept screensaver” and criticizes its “wall-to-wall product placement.” Those are the aggregator’s summary judgments, not a review by one individual critic.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Individual reviews raise related objections. Craig Mathieson wrote “It’s a true desktop disaster” in The Age on August 28, 2025. Johnny Oleksinski, writing in the New York Post on August 11, criticized a screenplay that becomes overcomplicated while Ice Cube stares at a computer. Other excerpts listed by Rotten Tomatoes fault the performances, visual effects, and screen-centered approach. These are critical opinions rather than objective measurements, but together they point to a consistent concern: the film’s format and storytelling choices can make the invasion feel more remote than urgent.
Product placement compounds that problem for critics. Branded services can fit a story about technology and commerce, but when they draw attention to themselves, they risk breaking immersion—particularly in a thriller asking viewers to take a planetary crisis seriously.

Does the screen-life approach work?
As a concept, a computer-mediated invasion story has a clear connection to a security analyst protagonist and themes of surveillance and privacy. The challenge is dramatic: viewers need enough context to understand what is happening beyond the interface, why the protagonist’s decisions matter, and how those decisions affect people at risk. The critical response suggests that the film’s interfaces and plot do not consistently provide that clarity or momentum.
The result, based on the published criticism, is a film whose formal device appears to be a liability more often than a source of suspense. That is a more useful way to understand the negative reception than treating the screen format itself as automatically unsuccessful: the question is whether it lets the viewer follow and feel the action.

Is it worth watching?
If you want a tightly paced alien-invasion thriller or a faithful-feeling adaptation of Wells, the critical response gives little reason to choose this one. If you are curious about an unusually screen-heavy studio film—or enjoy watching a divisive production to judge its choices for yourself—it may have curiosity value. Calling it “so bad it’s good” is a matter of taste, not a settled consensus.
Do not treat a Rotten Tomatoes percentage as a fixed verdict. Tom’s Guide reported that the film debuted at 0% and had risen to 4% by the time its 2025 worst-films article was written; that is a dated report of an aggregator score, not a permanent rating. Prime Video’s listing observed on a German-locale page displayed 1.6/5, while it also showed an IMDb rating of 2.5/10. Those platform figures are volatile and reflect particular listings, not a universal audience result.

How it relates to H.G. Wells’s original
The 2025 film is one screen-centered modern take on the alien-invasion premise; readers curious about the source can turn to H.G. Wells’s novel The War of the Worlds. The book offers a direct route to the original story without implying that the film’s particular presentation is representative of it. No specific print edition is identified here.
