War Machine now has a reported sequel in development at Netflix, but the update came after Alan Ritchson’s earlier, conditional comments about a story he had sketched out. A June 2, 2026 report said Patrick Hughes would return to direct and described Ritchson’s return as likely—not confirmed. No release date or production start has been announced in the reporting cited here.
Is War Machine 2 happening?
According to a June 2, 2026 report reproduced in IMDb’s news feed, Netflix had put War Machine 2 in development, with Patrick Hughes returning as director. The report characterized Ritchson’s return as likely, rather than confirmed. It did not establish a release date or production start. The update should be understood as a report about development, not evidence that filming is underway or that the film has a scheduled arrival date. Read the IMDb news-feed report.

What did Alan Ritchson say about a sequel?
In comments reported by Collider on March 9, 2026, Ritchson said he had thought about where a continuation could go and sketched out an idea while writing the first film. He also described War Machine as a “fully formed standalone story” and made taking it further conditional on getting the opportunity. Those remarks showed creative interest, not Netflix approval at the time. Collider attributed them to an interview with ScreenRant: Collider’s report on Ritchson’s sequel comments.
The distinction matters: the March comments were about a possible direction Ritchson had in mind; the later June report was the first update here to describe the sequel as being in development. They do not confirm that Ritchson has signed on to star.

What is War Machine about?
The Netflix film premiered for streaming on March 6, 2026, and runs 1 hour 46 minutes. Ritchson plays 81, a candidate in the final stage of U.S. Army Ranger selection. What begins as a training exercise turns into a fight to survive an unknown threat. Rotten Tomatoes lists the release date and film synopsis.
Why was there a sequel story just two days after release?
The March 9 coverage followed the film’s March 6 Netflix release and reported Ritchson’s earlier creative comments. A separate March 9 story noted that FlixPatrol ranked War Machine No. 1 worldwide on Netflix on March 8. That was a dated third-party daily chart position, not a current ranking or a measure of total views. Collider’s March 9 report on the ranking.

Later, a July 16 item in IMDb’s news feed attributed 147 million views to Netflix and described the movie as the service’s biggest film in the first half of 2026, citing ScreenRant. Treat that as a reported figure for that period: the feed item does not provide Netflix’s underlying counting methodology, and the number is not a live or current total. The item is surfaced in IMDb’s news feed.
