But the available sources do not prove that his role was the first officially licensed live-action portrayal of Aquaman. They establish his appearance and distinguish it from a separate Aquaman television project that followed, not the licensing history needed to verify that superlative.
What did Alan Ritchson play in Smallville?
Ritchson portrayed Arthur “A.C.” Curry in “Aqua,” an episode of Smallville. In an October 2005 interview, KryptonSite identified Ritchson with the role and gave October 20, 2005 as the episode’s scheduled air date: KryptonSite’s October 2005 interview.
Was this the same production as the later Aquaman project?
No. The sources describe the later project as a separate development, not a continuation of Ritchson’s Smallville role.
| Production | Date and context | Actor identified | What the source establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smallville, “Aqua” | Scheduled to air October 20, 2005, according to the contemporaneous interview | Alan Ritchson as Arthur “A.C.” Curry | His appearance in the episode; it does not establish licensing precedence. KryptonSite |
| Aquaman television project | The WB was developing the separate project by November 2005 | Justin Hartley is among the stars listed on DC’s catalog page; TV Guide reported Ritchson would not return in the title role. | A separate project and casting distinction, not which live-action portrayal was first licensed. TV Guide, November 14, 2005; DC’s Aquaman (2006) page |
TV Guide reported on November 14, 2005 that The WB was developing an Aquaman series and that Ritchson would not return in the title role. DC’s catalog entry for Aquaman (2006) lists Justin Hartley among its stars. These sources support treating the projects and their casting as distinct; they do not answer the separate question of which portrayal held licensing priority.

Does “first officially licensed live-action Aquaman” hold up?
That exact claim is not established by the available sources. A produced and broadcast appearance in a television series does not, on its own, document the terms or chronology of a license. The cited interview, contemporaneous reporting, and DC catalog entry do not provide a rights-holder statement, licensing record, or authoritative history that identifies Ritchson’s performance as the first licensed live-action portrayal.
The wording also needs a defined scope. “First Aquaman appearance in the Smallville continuity” is different from “first live-action Aquaman portrayal across all productions,” and both differ from “first officially licensed” portrayal. The sources support Ritchson’s role in the first of those contexts; they do not establish the broader licensing superlative.

A well-supported description is that Alan Ritchson played Arthur “A.C.” Curry in Smallville’s “Aqua,” scheduled for October 20, 2005, and was not cast as the lead in the separate Aquaman project reported later that year. Calling his performance the first officially licensed live-action Aquaman goes beyond what these sources demonstrate.
