What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Choose a VPS if unattended operation matters and you can confirm that its plan will sustain your stream; choose a home PC if you already have suitable equipment, steady upload, and are willing to manage local power, hardware, and internet failures. Neither option guarantees a continuous broadcast. YouTube’s requirements are the same whichever host you use, and available official guidance does not establish a universal winner for uptime, cost, or quality.
What changes when you host at home or on a VPS?
A home PC sends the encoder’s video through your home router and internet connection to YouTube. A VPS runs the encoder on a remote machine, so the stream relies on that provider’s hardware and network instead. You still configure and monitor the broadcast either way; a VPS changes where the machine runs, not the need to manage the stream.
| Decision point | Home PC | VPS |
|---|---|---|
| Network path | Your home upload, router, and internet provider carry the stream. Measure sustained outbound speed and leave headroom. | The provider’s network path and sustained upload capacity carry the stream. Confirm the plan’s limits and region with the provider. |
| Power and equipment | Depends on local power, cooling, hardware condition, and keeping the PC running. An optional UPS may help with a brief power interruption, but not an internet outage. | The provider operates remote hardware and its facility. Service-level commitments vary by provider and should be checked directly. |
| Setup and maintenance | You manage the PC, operating system, encoder, restarts, and home network. | You configure and monitor the encoder remotely and manage the VPS and provider account. |
| Cost | Depends on whether you already own a suitable PC, electricity, internet service, and any backup equipment. | Depends on the provider’s current plan, computing needs, transfer policy, and region. No general break-even point is established. |
| Recovery | Local device, power, or internet failures need local recovery or separate redundancy. | A provider or network failure needs provider-side recovery or a separate fallback. One VPS is not automatic redundancy. |
| YouTube and music rules | Same eligibility, bitrate, copyright, and archiving rules apply. | Same eligibility, bitrate, copyright, and archiving rules apply. |
Which option fits your situation?
Choose a home PC when
- You already have a suitable computer and can leave it running reliably.
- Your measured upload can sustain the selected stream bitrate with room to spare.
- You can respond to local equipment, power, router, or internet problems.
- The cost of electricity and any backup equipment makes sense for your situation.
Choose a VPS when
- You want the encoder and its power dependency away from your home.
- You have verified that the VPS plan supports sustained outbound streaming at your chosen quality.
- You are comfortable maintaining a remote machine and arranging recovery if the provider or its network fails.
- The provider’s current price, limits, and region work for your needs.
Before deciding, check sustained upload rather than headline download speed, identify who will handle restarts, consider the failures you can tolerate, compare your actual local and provider costs, and confirm you have the rights to the music. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom between stream bitrate and available upload bandwidth; connectivity disruptions can break a stream. YouTube’s guidance on internet connection and encoding settings explains the platform’s requirements.
Set a bitrate and encoder configuration YouTube can accept
Use YouTube’s recommended settings as a starting point, not as proof that a particular home connection or VPS can sustain them. The following H.264 figures are YouTube encoder recommendations; the reviewed guide does not state a publication year.

| Video setting | Recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 480p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
YouTube specifies constant bitrate (CBR) and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. For stereo audio, its recommended bitrate is 128 Kbps. Its guide lists RTMP/RTMPS as protocols and H.264, H.265, and AV1 as video options. Follow the settings supported by your encoder and test the complete stream before relying on it.
- Measure outbound capacity. Check sustained upload on the home connection or confirm sustained transfer and network limits with the VPS provider. Leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom above the stream bitrate.
- Set the encoder. Choose a resolution and frame rate your source and host can sustain. Apply the appropriate YouTube bitrate guidance, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and the recommended stereo audio bitrate where applicable.
- Connect to YouTube. Configure the encoder with the stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Preview and test. Set up the encoder ahead of time, preview the broadcast in Live Control Room, and check stream health and audio/video quality before depending on it.
- Check local recording and recovery. Verify any local archive files you intend to keep and test failover where applicable. A local archive is a separate safeguard; it does not make a broken stream stay live.
These steps apply to either host. YouTube’s setup guidance also advises previewing in Live Control Room, testing failover where applicable, verifying local archive files, and monitoring stream health and audio/video quality. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

Check channel eligibility and plan for archives
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions during the previous 90 days to enable live streaming. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours, so enable it before your planned launch rather than at the last minute. These are YouTube’s stated requirements; its reviewed help page does not give a publication year. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
YouTube’s encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For a 24/7 channel, plan how you will handle stream restarts and archives; do not assume a single continuous 24-hour broadcast will create a complete automatic archive.

Music rights still apply to a 24/7 radio stream
Hosting choice does not change your responsibility to obtain the necessary rights. YouTube’s livestream terms say the broadcaster represents and warrants that they have the rights needed to exploit the live content on Google services worldwide, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses), and other royalty participants. Read the YouTube livestream terms and obtain rights appropriate to your use before broadcasting.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If copyrighted material remains after a warning, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. Even material you are licensed to use may trigger an interruption if the rights holder has not added your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Resolve rights and allowlisting with the relevant rights holder; changing from a home PC to a VPS does not avoid these checks. See YouTube’s guidance on copyrighted content in live streams.
