First check whether the skipped item is a local file whose path contains Hindi (Devanagari) characters, or a YouTube video whose title is in Hindi. Those are different problems, and replacing VLC’s YouTube script will not fix a local file path that VLC cannot resolve. If VLC cannot play YouTube videos at all, VideoLAN’s documented first step is to update VLC; its script-replacement procedure is for that YouTube playback failure, not a confirmed Hindi-filename fix.
Identify what VLC is skipping
Look at the item in the VLC playlist and determine whether it points to a file on your device or to a YouTube video. A Hindi title in playlist metadata is not the same as Devanagari characters in a local file’s name or folder path. Also note whether the item remains visible in the playlist but fails when playback reaches it, or whether it is missing altogether.
| What the item is | What to investigate | What the documented YouTube-script fix addresses |
|---|---|---|
| Local file or folder path containing Hindi characters | Whether the path resolves on this device, the playlist format, and the operating system. | Not established as a fix for local files. |
| YouTube item with a Hindi title | Whether VLC can play that YouTube item and whether VLC is current. | Relevant only if YouTube playback itself fails. |
| Playlist item is visible but playback skips it | Determine whether the failed item is local or remote before changing settings. | Only relevant if the failure is YouTube playback. |
If the skipped entries are local Hindi-named files
Do not start by replacing youtube.lua. That script relates to YouTube playback, while a local-file entry depends on VLC being able to resolve the path recorded in the playlist. The exact cause is not established without the operating system, VLC version, playlist type, and a check of the affected path.
- Open the same file directly in VLC. If it plays when opened directly but not from the playlist, focus on the playlist entry or its saved path. If it does not play directly either, the issue is broader than playlist navigation.
- Check the path on the device where the playlist is being used. Confirm that the file and its parent folders still exist at that location. A playlist can refer to a path that is unavailable on another device or after files have been moved.
- Check how the playlist stores its entries. Note the playlist format and whether its entries use paths valid on this device. Do not assume a playlist made on another operating system will resolve the same way here.
- Test one affected file in a small new playlist. Add the file from its current location in VLC and save the test playlist. If that entry works while the original does not, the original playlist’s stored path or handling is a stronger lead than the Hindi title alone.
- Record the details before changing more settings. Note the operating system, VLC version, playlist format, exact symptom, and whether the path contains Devanagari characters. Those facts are needed to distinguish a path or playlist issue from a VLC build-specific problem.
VideoLAN’s rolling VLC project release notes include historical, separate entries for a fix involving invalid UTF-8 encoding of some filenames and for opening DVD folders with non-ASCII characters. They also include separate YouTube-related fixes. These entries do not establish that the current symptom is a Hindi-specific defect or identify a version that fixes it.

If VLC cannot play the YouTube stream
VideoLAN’s VLC User Documentation explains that changes to YouTube transmission protocols can make parts of VLC’s support obsolete. It says, “Be sure you have the latest version of VLC.” That is the appropriate first step when YouTube playback itself fails; it is not evidence that an otherwise playable YouTube stream skips local Hindi-named files.
- Update VLC to the latest version available for your operating system, then retry the YouTube item.
- If YouTube playback still fails, use VideoLAN’s documented script procedure. Download its
youtube.luafile, close VLC, open the playlist-script directory for your operating system, remove any existingyoutube.luacand/oryoutube.lua, and place the downloaded file there. - Restart VLC and test the YouTube item again. The documentation lists playlist-script locations for Windows 64-bit, Windows 32-bit, macOS, 64-bit Linux, and 32-bit Linux. Follow the current instructions for your platform; package layouts and YouTube behavior can change.
VideoLAN describes this procedure as a remedy for YouTube playback compatibility. It does not say that replacing the script repairs local paths or Hindi-named files. The exact script location depends on the operating system and VLC package.

What to report if the problem remains
- Your operating system and VLC version.
- The playlist format and whether the affected entry is a local file or a YouTube URL.
- Whether the Hindi text appears in the local path, only in the YouTube title, or both.
- Whether the file opens directly in VLC, outside the playlist.
- What happens at the skipped entry: for example, whether it stays visible, produces an error, or playback advances.
These details narrow down whether the next step belongs to local path and playlist handling or to YouTube playback compatibility; the title of the file alone does not identify the cause.
