First determine whether the Mac is only turning off its display or entering system sleep. In a short, preferably unlisted test, prevent system sleep while allowing the display to turn off, then watch YouTube Live Control Room’s preview and stream-health messages. If the feed continues, power management is implicated; if it stops, check VLC’s source and output, the network, and YouTube’s incoming stream. A dark screen alone does not prove the Mac has slept.
Why a sleeping display may not mean a sleeping Mac
macOS distinguishes display sleep from system sleep. A display can go dark while the computer remains awake, and other apps or frameworks may affect display sleep. Apple’s AVFoundation documentation says the default value of preventsDisplaySleepDuringVideoPlayback is false on macOS; that setting describes playback behavior and does not establish what VLC does or prove the cause of a YouTube interruption. Apple’s documentation also cautions that other apps or frameworks may prevent display sleep.
For an encoder-based broadcast, the sender provides the feed to YouTube. If the Mac actually sleeps, test the host and encoder path before blaming a dark display or changing a YouTube setting. That is a diagnostic inference, not a guarantee about VLC’s behavior.
Run a controlled test before changing settings
Record what happens
- Note the macOS version, Mac model, VLC version, whether the Mac is on battery or external power, and the time the display turns off.
- Determine whether the computer appears to enter system sleep or whether only the display goes dark. Do not infer system sleep from a black screen.
- Change one condition at a time. macOS Energy and Battery controls vary by release, and a version-specific System Settings path has not been established here.
Test with the Mac awake and the display off
- Start a short test broadcast, preferably unlisted, using the same VLC source and output configuration as the affected stream.
- Keep the Mac from entering system sleep for the test, while allowing the display to turn off if your macOS configuration permits it.
- Before the display goes dark, open YouTube Live Control Room and note the preview and stream-health status. YouTube recommends testing with relevant audio and movement and monitoring health messages during a broadcast.
- After the display turns off, compare the local VLC output with YouTube’s preview and health messages. If possible, check the live feed from a separate device or viewer.
If the YouTube preview remains healthy while the local display is dark, treat the symptom as local display or rendering behavior unless other evidence points elsewhere. If YouTube indicates that incoming video stopped, investigate the Mac’s sleep state, VLC playback and output, the network, and the ingest path. This comparison is a troubleshooting method, not a documented guarantee about VLC.

If the feed still stops while the Mac stays awake
Check the stream configuration
YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a stream URL and stream key entered in the encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it in screenshots. Check that VLC is still playing its source and sending to the intended output, and compare the timing of any failure with YouTube’s health messages.
Use settings that fit your available upload bandwidth and the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube’s guidance covers H.264, H.265, and AV1 and provides bitrate recommendations by format; there is no single bitrate to apply without knowing those stream details. Collect useful evidence for VLC support
If the symptom persists with the Mac demonstrably awake, note the VLC and macOS versions, source type, output configuration, whether local playback continues, and the exact YouTube health messages and failure time. YouTube describes an encoder as the software or tool that captures and compresses a feed; for software-specific problems, its troubleshooting guidance directs users to that software’s support team. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide can help distinguish encoder-side problems from receiving-side symptoms.
Check your VLC version, but do not assume an update fixes sleep
VideoLAN’s Mac download page listed VLC 3.0.23 as the current universal macOS download in the result retrieved on October 3, 2026. Availability can change, so compare your installed version with the official VLC for macOS download page. No cited source establishes that updating to 3.0.23 fixes this sleep-related symptom.

A 2019 VideoLAN development patch proposed removing macOS interface sleep-inhibition code. It is historical evidence only; it does not establish what a current VLC release does. The patch discussion should not be treated as a current setting or a confirmed fix.
When a separate streaming host makes sense
The first step is to test the existing Mac, not buy new hardware. If your workflow must continue without a computer doing the encoding, YouTube lists the AJA HELO Plus as a standalone encoder for direct YouTube Live streaming, with optional functionality for scheduled prerecorded media without a computer. Confirm its supported inputs, formats, monitoring options, current availability, and cost against your setup before considering it; YouTube’s listing does not establish that it suits every VLC source or budget.
