VLC or FFmpeg for Looping Prerecorded Lessons on YouTube Live

FFmpeg has the clearer documented route for looping a lesson into YouTube Live. Learn the YouTube settings to check, how VLC VLM looping differs, and what to test before going public.

FFmpeg is the better-documented choice for sending a prerecorded lesson to YouTube Live on a loop. Its official documentation shows real-time file output to an RTMP server and lists RTMPS as a supported protocol variant. VLC’s VideoLAN Manager (VLM) documentation explains how to loop a broadcast input list, but that alone does not establish that a particular VLC build can publish successfully to YouTube’s RTMPS endpoint. If you choose VLC, verify the output protocol support in your installed version and test before relying on it.

Either way, looping a file and delivering a continuous live encoder feed are separate jobs: you need both a repeatable playback setup and a working connection to YouTube’s ingest server.

VLC vs. FFmpeg: which should you choose?

Consideration FFmpeg VLC with VLM
Looping Can be configured as part of a file-to-stream workflow; tailor the command to the input and installed build. VLM documents a broadcast input list with a loop property that restarts the list after its final input.
YouTube ingest path FFmpeg documents real-time file output to RTMP and lists RTMPS as a protocol variant. Confirm your build, URL and output settings. The cited VLM documentation establishes looping, not direct YouTube RTMPS compatibility for every version or setup.
Setup and control Command-line setup is precise but requires matching input, output, encoding settings and stream credentials. VLM offers broadcast configuration, but you still need to confirm that the chosen output can publish to YouTube.
How clearly the full route is documented The file-to-RTMP route is explicitly documented by the FFmpeg protocol documentation. VideoLAN’s VLM documentation describes looping but does not establish a universal YouTube RTMPS route.

This comparison is about documentation, not a claim that FFmpeg is universally more reliable or that VLC cannot work. Your installed version, input file, selected YouTube ingest URL and upload connection all matter.

Prepare the YouTube Live stream

  1. Check channel eligibility. YouTube says a channel must be verified and must have had no live-streaming restrictions during the preceding 90 days. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
  2. Create or schedule an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or schedule the stream and copy the stream URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not put a real one in a command that could be shared, logged or published.
  3. Choose RTMPS where available. Copy the RTMPS address shown in Live Control Room if your encoder supports it. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL and recommends it; the default address may be ordinary RTMP. Details: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
  4. Pick compatible output settings. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS as the protocol; H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 as video choices; up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Available choices can depend on the selected codec and the encoder build. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.

Bitrate examples for H.264

YouTube’s guidance gives the following minimum and recommended bitrates for these H.264 combinations. They are recommendations for ingest settings, not a guarantee that a connection with the same nominal upload rate will remain stable.

Output Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 5 Mbps
720p at 60 fps not stated for this example 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps not stated for this example 17 Mbps

Use the current YouTube table for the full set of codec, resolution and frame-rate combinations; do not infer an unlisted minimum from a recommended figure. Leave upload headroom beyond the video bitrate for audio and network variation, then test from the actual connection you plan to use.

Loop and publish with FFmpeg

FFmpeg’s protocol documentation demonstrates real-time file delivery to an RTMP server with -re, an input file and FLV output, and documents RTMPS among its RTMP variants. The following is a configuration pattern, not a universal copy-and-run command: replace the placeholders, choose encoding options that match your file and YouTube’s current guidance, and verify protocol support in your installed FFmpeg build.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "lesson.mp4"
  -c:v libx264 -b:v 5000k -maxrate 5000k -bufsize 10000k
  -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k
  -f flv "RTMPS_URL/STREAM_KEY"
  • -re reads the file at its native rate rather than pushing it as fast as possible. -stream_loop -1 asks FFmpeg to repeat the input indefinitely.
  • The example targets 720p30-style H.264 video bitrate of 5 Mbps, the recommended value in YouTube’s table. It does not resize the picture; if your source is a different resolution or frame rate, change the encoding options to match the intended output and YouTube’s guidance.
  • -g 60 at 30 fps sets a two-second GOP/keyframe interval. Confirm the actual encoder behavior and keep the interval within YouTube’s recommended limit.
  • RTMPS_URL/STREAM_KEY is illustrative only. Use the exact ingest URL and key from Live Control Room in the format expected by the endpoint; never publish your real key.
  • libx264 and AAC must be available in the build. Check ffmpeg -encoders and your build’s protocol support before the event; if an encoder or RTMPS protocol is unavailable, use a suitable build or adjust the configuration.

Consult the FFmpeg protocol documentation for protocol options, including reconnect-related options. Reconnection behavior depends on the exact protocol and command configuration; do not assume the process will recover cleanly from every network or ingest interruption.

Loop a broadcast input with VLC VLM

VLM is VLC’s broadcast manager. Its documentation describes defining a broadcast with an input, an output and a loop property; the input list restarts after the last input finishes. That confirms the loop mechanism, not that every VLC installation can publish directly to YouTube over the desired RTMPS endpoint.

  1. Check the documentation and options for your installed VLC version to confirm its VLM syntax and output modules.
  2. Define a VLM broadcast with your lesson file as the input, the intended network output, and looping enabled. Use the exact output syntax supported by your version; the cited documentation does not verify a single YouTube-ready RTMPS command for all builds.
  3. Enter the Live Control Room stream URL and key using the format required by the output module. Keep the key private.
  4. Run a private or unlisted test and confirm that YouTube receives a stable picture and audio, that the file restarts at its end, and that the broadcast remains live through the transition.

Do not confuse VLC’s ordinary local repeat or playlist playback with a YouTube live stream. Local playback can repeat successfully while no encoder feed reaches YouTube. For VLM’s documented looping behavior, see VideoLAN’s VLM documentation.

Test before the lesson goes public

  • Use comparable motion and audio to the real lesson. A static menu or silent segment will not reveal all encoding or audio problems.
  • Check the Live Control Room preview before making the stream public; confirm picture, audio, aspect ratio and playback speed.
  • Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and listen to the stream during broadcast, particularly around the file’s loop point.
  • Test the exact machine, network, stream URL, encoder build and output settings you intend to use. A successful test on a different setup does not verify the production configuration.
  • YouTube’s live tips recommend setting up the encoder at least two hours ahead and starting it at least 15 minutes before the event. See YouTube live streaming tips.

When finished, stop the stream in YouTube and stop the encoder as appropriate. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that statement does not establish automatic archiving for longer streams. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
YouTube shows no incoming feed Wrong stream URL or key, unsupported output protocol, or encoder not sending a compatible feed. Copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room; confirm the installed build supports the selected RTMP/RTMPS route and check its error output.
Feed connects, but video or audio is missing Input stream or selected output settings are incompatible or the file lacks the expected track. Inspect the input’s video and audio tracks and verify the chosen codecs and encoder settings. Check the Live Control Room preview.
Stream is unstable or reports health problems Upload capacity may be inadequate or variable for the configured bitrate, or the encoding settings may not match the source and ingest guidance. Reduce output demands if needed, leave more upload headroom, and repeat the test on the production connection while monitoring stream health.
Lesson stops at the end instead of repeating The loop option was not applied to the input or broadcast as intended. For FFmpeg, verify the loop option and input ordering. For VLC, verify the VLM broadcast’s loop property and test through the file transition.
VLC loops locally but YouTube never receives a feed Looping works, but the configured output path may not support the selected YouTube ingest protocol. Check the exact VLC version’s output support and conduct a private or unlisted end-to-end test before relying on it.
Stream does not recover after a dropped connection The encoder process or ingest session may need to be restarted; reconnect behavior is configuration- and protocol-dependent. Inspect the encoder’s error output and YouTube stream status, then follow the recovery behavior documented for your precise build and command.

Copyright and repeat-broadcast considerations

Only stream lesson video and audio you have the rights or permission to use. Repeating a file does not change its copyright status or make a live broadcast exempt from platform rules. Check YouTube’s current policies and account-specific restrictions before scheduling a public loop; the eligibility and encoder guidance above does not determine whether a particular lesson qualifies for monetization or satisfies every policy.

For an additional pre-upload rights checklist, see StreamNeo’s copyright safety checklist.
