Yes, Vladimir is on Netflix, and it is a short watch: eight episodes, each roughly half an hour. Netflix’s UK title page lists runtimes of 27 to 33 minutes and says the series can be downloaded. Netflix Tudum reported it as streaming in March 2026, and the Netflix UK listing identifies it as a 2026 limited series. Catalogs differ by country, so check your local Netflix library before you press play.

The short answer to whether it is worth your evening is yes, with one caveat. Tom’s Guide critic Alix Blackburn gave the series 3.5 out of 5 in a review published March 5, 2026, praising its performances and bingeable pace while flagging an uneven tone. The rest of this guide explains what the show is about, who makes it, and where its tonal mix will either hook you or wear you down.

What the series is about

The eight-episode limited series is adapted from Julia May Jonas’s novel of the same name. Netflix’s official synopsis describes a writer, professor, wife and mother at a small liberal arts college who becomes fixated on a captivating new colleague, Vladimir. The show mixes desire and obsession with marriage and workplace pressure, and Netflix’s own description flags dark humor and complex characters.

Netflix’s UK episode summaries add a second thread: her husband, John, faces scrutiny over past affairs with students, while the protagonist’s attraction to Vladimir grows. That combination is the engine of the show. The marital storyline gives the comedy its edge, and the infatuation keeps pulling the story somewhere more uncomfortable.

The protagonist has no name, in the novel or the series. The title points to the object of her fixation rather than to her. Jonas has said she wanted to reverse a familiar literary pattern, a man’s obsession with a younger woman, and tell the story from a woman’s side.

Netflix’s original announcement named Kate Robin as showrunner, writer and executive producer, and Julia May Jonas as writer, creator and executive producer. The studio named in that announcement was 20th Television.

Why the tone works

Weisz is the reason most viewers will stay. Blackburn singles out her performance and the chemistry between her and Woodall. Weisz herself has described the show as “a heightened fairy tale” and, on the tone, said: “It’s mischievous, and it’s a good tonal cocktail.” Those are her words in Netflix Tudum’s coverage, not an independent verdict.

The direct-to-camera narration is the show’s signature device. Jonas explained the approach in her own words: “We managed to make external a lot of those internalizations through the direct address and the fantasy and things like that.” In practice, the protagonist speaks straight to the viewer, which puts you inside her head and makes her fantasies feel shared. Blackburn argues the device also raises a useful question about how far you should trust what she thinks she sees.

Where the tone stumbles

Blackburn’s main reservation is tonal inconsistency. The show moves between broad comedy and darker drama, and the plot moves quickly enough that a scene can change temperature before you have settled into it. Blackburn suggests some of these shifts may reflect the protagonist’s changing mental state, which is a generous reading, but she still counts the unevenness as a weakness.

That is worth weighing before you commit. If you want a steady comic register, the show will feel jittery. If you are comfortable with a story that keeps you slightly off balance, the swings are part of the appeal.

Who it suits

  • Good fit: viewers who want a short, sensual story with a sharp, unreliable narrator and enjoy watching a character talk directly to the audience.
  • Good fit: people who will finish the eight episodes in one sitting, given the runtimes.
  • Less certain: viewers who need consistent tone or who find affairs and obsession hard to watch without a clear moral frame.

Reading the novel first or after

The series is based on Julia May Jonas’s novel Vladimir. Reading it is a natural follow-on for anyone who finishes the show and wants more of the protagonist’s inner voice. Check your preferred bookseller for the edition and availability in your country before buying.
