Its central idea is that love, in the book’s reading, takes many forms: between a daughter and her father, between a writer and her work, between people caught in Partition, and between the author and the men and friends who shaped her life.
What the book is
The Revenue Stamp is Pritam’s autobiography. The publisher, Vikas, describes it as a candid account of her creative life and lists an English paperback edition under ISBN 9789325991347, running to 206 pages. Those bibliographic details describe that particular paperback. They are not a broader measure of the book’s reach or importance.
What the publisher says the book covers
The publisher’s summary, which is promotional copy, names several subjects: her relationship with her father, her literary career, her experience of Partition, public criticism of her work, her first marriage, her relationship with the poet Sahir Ludhianvi, and her relationship with Imroz. Read that list as the publisher’s account of scope. It is not a substitute for checking how the book itself handles each subject.
Why it is called The Revenue Stamp
The title comes from a remark that a Scroll essay attributes to Khushwant Singh. In that account, Pritam’s life and writing were so closely interwoven that the autobiography would work as a kind of official seal, a revenue stamp, placed on her body of work. The anecdote is Khushwant Singh’s version as reported by Scroll. It has not been independently verified, and it should be read as one account of the title’s origin rather than settled fact.

The prologue’s own explanation
The book’s prologue offers a related reading in Pritam’s own words. A scholarly article reproduces the passage, which reflects on how her life reached her novels and poems:
“Whatever happened in my life happened between the layers of thought that found their way into novels and poems. What was left? Still, I thought I might write a few lines – something to complete the account of my life and at the end seal it with this revenue stamp as it were. Or am I with this revenue stamp setting a seal to my novels and poems… my entire, literary work… I wonder.”

How the theme of love reads in the book
The title’s claim that Pritam “demonstrated the many ways to love” is best understood as an interpretation rather than a publisher’s statement. A Scroll essay reads the book through love, and the publisher’s list of subjects supports that reading: romantic relationships sit beside a daughter’s relationship with her father, a writer’s relationship with criticism, and a life shaped by the upheaval of Partition.

The prologue’s concern with the overlap between life and fiction points the same way. For Pritam, the autobiography is not a separate project from her novels and poems. It is a place where the personal material of those works is gathered and named, which is why the book reads as an account of how she loved people, work and her own history, not only as a record of romances.
