Madhurima Vidyarthi’s historical novel The School for Bad Girls follows fictional Kumudini, an 11-year-old widow, into a world where girls’ education challenged social expectations. Its fictional story brings readers into the orbit of real reformers including Kadambini Ganguly, whose achievements in higher education and medicine helped widen the possibilities available to Indian women.
What is The School for Bad Girls about?
Published by Penguin Random House India under its Duckbill imprint in October 2024, the young adult novel uses a fictional protagonist to explore a historical moment when girls’ access to education was sharply constrained. In Ananya Kaushik’s review for Scroll, Kumudini is described as an 11-year-old widow who is taken in and educated. The novel places her story alongside historical figures, including Kadambini Ganguly, Dwarkanath Ganguly, Bidhumukhi Ganguly, Sarala Ray and Abala Bose.
Kumudini and the events of her personal story belong to the novel, not to the historical record. The book’s value as a point of entry is the way its fictional narrative brings the pressures surrounding girls’ education into focus while introducing readers to real people who challenged those limits.
Who was Kadambini Ganguly?
Kadambini Ganguly was a pioneering Bengali educator and physician. Bethune College records that she and Chandramukhi Bose passed the BA examination in 1883, becoming among the first female graduates of the British Empire. In 1884, Kadambini became the first woman admitted to Bengal Medical College; she later earned the Graduate of Bengal Medical College (GBMC) qualification, according to the college’s institutional history.

The Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh describes Kadambini as the first Indian woman to practise medicine in British India. That wording is more precise than calling her simply “India’s first woman doctor”: sources distinguish between admission to medical college, graduation, qualification and practising medicine, and those milestones do not mean the same thing. The college’s profile records her 1883 graduation and 1886 GBMC qualification (Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh).
What was Banga Mahila Vidyalaya’s connection to Bethune School?
Banga Mahila Vidyalaya was part of the institutional history behind Bethune School. Bethune College states that Bethune School was reorganized in 1878 after it amalgamated with Banga Mahila Vidyalaya (Bethune College history). This real educational history provides context for the novel’s school setting, but the book’s scenes and plot remain a fictionalized rendering rather than a record of particular historical events.

The National Book Trust of India’s profile of Kadambini also describes her education at Banga Mahila Vidyalaya and Bethune School, her marriage to Dwarkanath Ganguly and her medical studies (National Book Trust profile). Together, the institutional accounts help clarify the connection between the school, the reformers and the educational path Kadambini pursued.
