Viola Davis is listed as the 2025 recipient of the Golden Globes’ Cecil B. DeMille Award, a special honor for outstanding contributions to entertainment. The year labels differ across the official record: the Golden Globes announced her in November 2024 as its “2024 Cecil B. DeMille Award” honoree, while its recipient list places her under 2025. The announcement, ceremony and televised broadcast were separate events.
Why the award is labeled both 2024 and 2025
On November 20, 2024, the Golden Globes announced Davis as its 2024 Cecil B. DeMille Award honoree. Its official award-history page lists her under 2025. These labels reflect how the announcement and recipient list identify the honor; they do not mean Davis received it during the January 5 televised Golden Globes broadcast. The announcement and the award history are the official references for the two labels.
When Viola Davis received the award
The Golden Globes’ announcement scheduled an honoree gala dinner for January 3, 2025, at the Beverly Hilton. The official page for Davis’s acceptance speech says she accepted the award at a Beverly Hilton ceremony on January 4. The sources do not explain the one-day difference, so the dinner date and ceremony date should be kept distinct. The 82nd annual Golden Globes broadcast was scheduled for January 5.
The organization published Davis’s uncut acceptance speech on January 5. Its description says she reflected on her childhood, acting as a way to enter other people’s lives, and gratitude to people including her six-year-old self. The page provides a summary rather than a written transcript.

What the Cecil B. DeMille Award recognizes
The Golden Globes describes the Cecil B. DeMille Award as recognizing “outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment.” Its official history says the first award went to Cecil B. DeMille in 1952, followed by Walt Disney in 1953. Recipients are chosen by the HFPA board of directors, and the honor was not presented in 1976. The announcement said the award had been bestowed on 69 honorees as of November 2024; that is a dated count, not a current total.
The announcement also distinguished the Cecil B. DeMille Award from the Carol Burnett Award, which it described as honoring achievements in television.

Why Viola Davis was selected
The Golden Globes’ announcement praised Davis’s impact on film. Helen Hoehne, identified there as president of the Golden Globes, said: “Viola Davis is a luminary whose profound talent has continuously shifted the lens through which we see and understand film.”
The announcement described Davis as an actress, producer, Golden Globe winner and New York Times best-selling author. It counted seven Golden Globe nominations and noted her 2017 supporting-actress win for the film adaptation of August Wilson’s Fences. It also said she earned EGOT status through Oscar, Emmy, Grammy and multiple Tony wins, and founded JuVee Productions with Julius Tennon in 2012. These are the career details as presented by the Golden Globes in its announcement.
