Vince Zampella, the game developer and executive who co-founded Infinity Ward and helped create the Call of Duty franchise, died on December 21, 2025, after a single-vehicle crash on Angeles Crest Highway in Los Angeles County. Electronic Arts confirmed his death on December 22.
Zampella was 55. His career also included co-founding Respawn Entertainment, the studio behind Titanfall, Titanfall 2, and Apex Legends. He was later a senior Electronic Arts executive associated with the Battlefield franchise.
What happened in the Angeles Crest Highway crash
The crash took place near mile marker 62.70 on Angeles Crest Highway. According to a preliminary account from the California Highway Patrol cited by local news reports, the vehicle was traveling southbound when it veered off the roadway for reasons that had not been established. It struck a concrete barrier and became fully engulfed in fire.

Reports identified the vehicle as a red 2026 Ferrari 296 GTS. The driver remained trapped inside the vehicle, while the passenger was ejected. Both occupants died from their injuries.
The preliminary account did not establish why the vehicle left the road. There is no responsible basis, on the information available, to make claims about speed, impairment, distraction, or fault. Those details should not be inferred from the type of vehicle or from the severity of the crash.
Medical examiner reported smoke inhalation and thermal injuries
Later reporting based on the Los Angeles County medical-examiner record identified thermal injuries and smoke inhalation as the causes of death. Blunt trauma was also listed as a significant condition. The manner of death was reported as accidental.
That finding adds medical detail to the earlier crash reports, but it does not resolve the unanswered question of why the Ferrari left the highway. The crash sequence and the medical cause of death are separate parts of the record.

Zampella was one of the central architects of modern blockbuster first-person shooters, but he was not the sole creator of Call of Duty. In 2002, he co-founded Infinity Ward with Jason West and Grant Collier. The studio’s work helped establish Call of Duty as one of the defining shooter franchises of the 2000s and beyond.
The distinction matters. Major games are collaborative productions involving designers, programmers, artists, writers, producers, publishers, and many other contributors. Zampella’s importance lies in his leadership and creative role in founding Infinity Ward and shaping the early identity of the franchise—not in personal authorship of every later Call of Duty installment.

From Infinity Ward to Respawn Entertainment
After leaving Infinity Ward, Zampella co-founded Respawn Entertainment with Jason West in 2010. The new studio carried forward an emphasis on fast, technically polished first-person action while developing its own identity outside Call of Duty.

Electronic Arts identifies Titanfall 2 as the acclaimed sequel in the series. Its movement system, wall-running, shooting, and campaign design demonstrated that Zampella’s influence was not limited to the franchise that first made his name widely known.
Electronic Arts acquired Respawn in 2017. The studio later expanded its work through Apex Legends and projects connected with the Star Wars universe. Zampella’s broader executive responsibilities eventually included work associated with Battlefield, placing him among the senior figures involved with several of the industry’s best-known action franchises.
A career that shaped several generations of shooters
Zampella’s influence can be understood through the studios and teams he helped build as much as through individual game credits. Infinity Ward helped turn military-themed first-person shooters into global blockbuster entertainment. Respawn then showed that the same leadership could support a new studio, a new science-fiction universe, a distinctive movement system, and a successful live-service game.
That progression also illustrates why it is too simple to describe his legacy as only the creation of Call of Duty. His professional path crossed multiple generations of shooters:

- Infinity Ward: Co-founder and a key figure in the early development of Call of Duty.
- Respawn Entertainment: Co-founder of the studio that created Titanfall and Titanfall 2.
- Apex Legends: Part of the broader Respawn portfolio that expanded the studio’s reach into the battle-royale and live-service space.
- Electronic Arts: Senior executive work connected with major franchises including Battlefield.
These achievements were collective. Zampella’s contribution was that of a founder, creative leader, and executive who repeatedly helped assemble teams capable of changing the direction of a genre.
Tributes and the impact of his death
Electronic Arts’ confirmation marked the public acknowledgment of the loss, while reporting from the Associated Press, The Guardian, CBS Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Times, and NBC Los Angeles documented his career and the circumstances of the crash. Public accounts have focused on the scale of his contribution to game development and on the studios and franchises associated with his work.
Because the crash investigation did not establish the reason the vehicle left the roadway, accounts of his death should remain precise. The confirmed story is already significant: a prominent game-industry founder died in an accidental highway crash, leaving behind a body of work that influenced both the design of modern shooters and the way major development studios are built.
