Vetrimaaran’s Viduthalai Part 2 is a serious, performance-driven political drama with real force. Critics agree on that much. Where they split is on whether the film’s ambition fits inside its runtime. The main critical argument, made most fully by Nandini Ramnath in Scroll.in, is that the film is richly detailed and often gripping, but it tries to hold more ideas than its length can carry, and the result is avoidable bloat. This review sets out what the film does well, where it strains, and who is likely to find it rewarding.
What the film is about
The 2024 Tamil-language film, directed and written by Vetrimaaran, picks up after police capture Perumaal Vaathiyaar. Rather than moving straight into a chase or a showdown, much of the film is his account of his past and his rise. ZEE5 describes him as a former schoolteacher who took up arms after zamindar attacks on his village and formed the Makkal Padai. The sequel therefore turns its attention from the state’s pursuit of a revolutionary to the revolutionary’s own reasoning, and that shift is central to both the film’s appeal and its problems.

What the critics agree on
Across the reviews, three strengths come up repeatedly.
- Cinematography and mood. Scroll.in praises R. Velraj’s cinematography, and the Indian Express review cites the film’s grim tone, cinematography and sound as sources of its most forceful moments.
- Power-play scenes. Ramnath singles out the sharply observed scenes in which characters manoeuvre for advantage. These are where the film’s close observation of institutional power is most convincing.
- Performances. Vijay Sethupathi anchors the central role. Ramnath also praises Rajiv Menon’s supporting character, and the Indian Express review points to performances generally as a reason the film’s final stretch lands.
Even the critics who are cooler on the film accept that its political conviction is sincere. The disagreement is over how that conviction is delivered.

Where the reviews push back
Density and exposition
The central complaint is that the film explains its politics at length. Ramnath describes the political explanations as lecture-like, and the Rotten Tomatoes excerpts identify sermonising or didactic passages. The Indian Express review says the film can over-explain and repeat its points. In practice, this means scenes that pause the drama so that a character can articulate a position the audience has largely already grasped.
Editing, sound and songs
Ramnath also points to frenetic editing, overlapping sound, voiceovers and songs that play over dialogue. Those choices suit a film about pressure and urgency, but they make it harder for viewers to follow who is saying what, and they add to the sense of a story with too much in it. Viewers who like a leaner, more linear political thriller may find this the most tiring element.
Rank #2
Uneven use of the ensemble
Ramnath argues that Manju Warrier is underserved, and the Indian Express review says the film dilutes Kumaresan’s role. The critical view, then, is not that the film has too few characters but that the ensemble is too large for the time it gives each of them.
Runtime: which figure to trust
Sources do not agree on how long the film is, and the difference matters because the main criticism is about length. The table below lists each figure with its source.

How the reviews score it
| Source | Verdict | Central argument |
|---|---|---|
| Scroll.in (Nandini Ramnath) | Score not stated | Rich and compelling in parts, but too dense for its runtime. |
| Indian Express (Avinash Ramachandran) | 3/5 | Political conviction is both the film’s strength and its undoing. |
| Rotten Tomatoes | 70% Tomatometer from three critic reviews, at the time it was checked | Strong political core and performances, weaker emotional impact than Part 1, and didactic passages. |
The Rotten Tomatoes percentage is an aggregate of a small number of reviews and changes as reviews are added, so treat it as a snapshot rather than a settled measure of critical opinion.
Rank #4
How it compares with Part 1
The most common comparison is emotional. The Rotten Tomatoes excerpts argue that Part 2 has weaker emotional impact than Part 1, even as its political core remains strong. The shift in focus explains why. Part 1 kept the story tied to a more immediate pursuit, while Part 2 spends much of its length on backstory and argument. Viewers who came for the same kind of momentum may feel the change most. Viewers interested in the ideological history of the character may find the change the point of the sequel.

In a 2025 interview reported by The Hollywood Reporter India, Vetrimaaran described the project as growing from a small 40-day project into a two-part saga shot over 200+ days. These are the director’s own figures as reported by THR India, not independently verified production accounts. The scale helps explain the film’s ambition, and it also helps explain why critics ask whether one story needed to become two parts.

Where to watch
ZEE5 lists the film with Tamil and Hindi audio, and gives the Hindi-dubbed OTT premiere as March 28, 2025. Rotten Tomatoes lists Prime Video. Streaming availability varies by country and changes over time, so check the current listing on ZEE5 or Prime Video in your region before you plan to watch.
Is it worth watching?
Yes, if you want a politically serious film with strong performances, atmospheric filmmaking and a central character whose conviction drives the drama. It is less suitable if you want a tight thriller or find lecturing dialogue tiresome. Expect a long, dense watch in which the emotional payoff depends on accepting the film’s pace. If the critics are right, the film asks more of its audience than it fully repays, but the things it does well are substantial.
