The rest of the cast is split between live-action performers and the robot characters, and the robots are where a simple cast list can mislead: many are credited to voice actors, while others also involve motion-capture performers who supply the body performance.

Netflix’s Media Center description names Brown, Pratt, Quan, Alexander, Esposito, Tucci and Norman in its main cast section, and describes Mackie, Harrelson, Cox, Slate and Tudyk as lending their talents as robot voices. Netflix’s Tudum guide adds character-level context for the film. Woody Norman appears in the principal cast, but the announcement does not assign him a character, so no role is given for him here.
Robot characters: voice work and motion capture
Netflix describes the robot ensemble as combining voice and motion-capture performers. These are separate jobs. A voice actor records the lines a character speaks, while a motion-capture performer provides the physical movement that the character’s body is built from. Herman shows the split clearly: Anthony Mackie voices him, and Martin Klebba is named as the motion-capture performer for the same character.

Netflix’s own commentary puts the division of labour in one sentence. Producer Angela Russo-Otstot, speaking to Netflix, said: “The voice artists brought these characters to life in postproduction, but the motion capture actors are the ones who gave the robots their soul.”
Netflix’s materials do not give a voice-and-motion-capture split for every robot, so the table records only the credits Netflix states. For robots not listed with a motion-capture performer, a voice credit alone should not be read as the full extent of the performance.

What the film is about
Netflix describes an alternate, retro-futuristic version of the 1990s in which sentient robots live in exile after a failed uprising. Michelle sets out to find her younger brother, whom she believed dead, and travels with Cosmo and the smuggler Keats.
Source material
The film is an adaptation of Simon Stålenhag’s graphic novel of the same name, first published in 2018. Readers who want the original world behind the film can start with the book, which works as further reading rather than a replacement for the cast information above.

Netflix states that The Electric State began streaming on March 14, 2025, and its official title page currently lists the film for viewing. Netflix’s catalogue varies by country and changes over time, so check the title page in your region before searching for the film.
