The car BMW identifies as appearing in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol is the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics concept—not a production BMW i8. BMW described the i8 concept as the Vision EfficientDynamics car’s successor, which explains why the film car is often referred to as an i8.

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol is the fourth film in the Mission: Impossible series. Skydance’s official film page provides the movie’s official trailer. The available official information does not establish the publication date or exact cut of the trailer referenced in this headline, or confirm which car shots appear in that particular edit.
Is the car in the film actually a BMW i8?
BMW’s December 20, 2011, PressClub release identifies the film vehicle as the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics concept. The company said that several BMW vehicles, including that concept and a BMW 6 Series Convertible, were driven by Ethan Hunt and featured in action sequences.
BMW’s November 2011 announcement called the BMW i8 concept the successor to the Vision EfficientDynamics concept. That relationship connects the two cars, but it does not make the vehicle shown in the film a production i8. BMW’s terminology is the basis for this distinction; the release is a corporate account, not an independent production record.

The i8 concept’s separate premiere appearance
BMW also reported that an i8 Concept joined the cast at the film’s U.S. premiere in New York on December 19, 2011. That was a separate event from the car’s role in the movie: the film vehicle was identified as the Vision EfficientDynamics concept.
