RTMP, HLS, SRT, WebRTC, and MPEG-DASH are not interchangeable choices for the same job. HLS and DASH are commonly used to deliver video to viewers over HTTP; WebRTC is designed for real-time communication; SRT is used to transport live video between endpoints, especially across less predictable networks. RTMP is a name you may encounter in contribution and ingest workflows, but its precise capabilities and current platform support should be checked against the relevant service’s documentation.

First, identify where the protocol fits in the stream

A live video workflow has several stages: capture, encoding, sending the feed to an ingest point, preparing it for delivery, and playback on viewers’ devices. A protocol used to send a feed to a service is doing a different job from one used to distribute playback to a large audience. Some services also bridge or convert protocols between stages.

  • Contribution or ingest: carries a live feed from a source toward a receiving endpoint.
  • Viewer delivery: distributes video from servers or a content delivery network (CDN) to playback devices.
  • Interactive communication: supports a session where participants need to exchange media in real time.

So a useful comparison starts with the workflow, not a simple ranking of protocol names.

What each protocol is for

HLS: HTTP delivery for viewers

Apple describes HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) as delivering audio and video over HTTP from ordinary web servers. It can serve live broadcasts and prerecorded video, and can offer multiple bitrate variants so playback can switch quality as network conditions change. HTTP delivery also makes it suitable for distribution through web infrastructure and CDNs. Apple’s authoring requirements cover matters such as codecs, containers, playlists, security, and low-latency behavior on Apple platforms; implementation details and device requirements matter.

Low-Latency HLS authoring parameters should not be mistaken for a guaranteed camera-to-screen delay. Apple’s specification recommends a one-second part target duration, while also tying that target to expected client-to-server round-trip time. Capture, encoding, packaging, network delivery, buffering, decoding, and display still contribute to the viewer’s total delay.

MPEG-DASH: adaptive HTTP streaming

MPEG-DASH is MPEG’s standard for multimedia streaming over the internet. At a practical level, it is another HTTP streaming approach for adaptive delivery. Do not assume that every device or service supports the same DASH features or behaves identically. Apple’s CMAF overview notes that CMAF segmented media can support both HLS and MPEG-DASH presentations, but shared media formats do not make the protocols or their implementations identical.

WebRTC: real-time communication

WebRTC is the relevant comparison when people need interactive media, such as a live conversation or a session with participants exchanging audio and video. IETF documents describe RTP as the media transport framework used in WebRTC and specify how WebRTC endpoints use transports while interacting with NATs, relays, and firewalls. It is better understood as a real-time communications suite than as another CDN-oriented segmented playback format.

Calling a workflow “WebRTC” does not by itself establish its end-to-end delay. The implementation and the complete media path determine the result.

SRT: resilient transport between endpoints

Secure Reliable Transport (SRT) is described by Haivision as open-source transport technology for streaming over unpredictable networks. Its mechanisms detect network conditions, compensate for jitter and bandwidth fluctuation, retransmit missing packets, and support AES encryption. It is used between contribution and distribution endpoints.

That resilience involves a trade-off: retransmission requires time in the receiving buffer. Haivision distinguishes SRT’s transport delay from overall camera-to-screen delay. Its documentation defines SRT latency as the delay introduced by sending over the network; capture, encoding, multiplexing, splitting, decoding, and display add other delays.

Haivision’s 2026 guidance gives four times round-trip time as a rule of thumb for SRT latency on a fairly good network, in an example with 0.1–0.2% packet loss and no significant burst loss. This is a qualified example, not a universal setting or an end-to-end latency promise. Link characteristics and the rest of the workflow matter.

RTMP: a name found in contribution workflows

RTMP appears in streaming contribution and ingest discussions, but the sources available for this comparison do not establish a detailed RTMP specification. Avoid inferring a particular latency, codec, security property, or current platform compatibility from the name alone. Before configuring an encoder, confirm which ingest protocols and settings the target platform currently supports in its own documentation.

How to choose for your workflow

Your main need Starting point What to verify
Deliver live or prerecorded video to a broad viewer audience HLS or MPEG-DASH Player and device support, the service’s implementation, and how adaptive playback is packaged and delivered.
Let participants exchange media interactively WebRTC End-to-end performance, network traversal, relays, firewalls, and the implementation’s media path.
Send a live feed between endpoints over a link with jitter or packet loss SRT Network conditions, retransmission buffer time, encryption needs, and the receiving endpoint’s support.
Send a feed to a platform ingest endpoint Use a protocol the platform currently documents and supports Its official ingest documentation and the encoder’s compatible settings. RTMP-specific details are not established here.

These are starting points, not guarantees. The right choice depends on both ends of the connection, the audience’s playback devices, network conditions, and how the service handles packaging or protocol conversion.

Compare latency as an end-to-end result

“Low latency” can refer to different parts of the workflow. Transport delay is only one component. Capture, encoding, packaging, transmission, buffering, decoding, and display all affect the time between an event and a viewer seeing it. A protocol’s configuration value or an authoring target therefore cannot be treated as the entire camera-to-screen delay.

For SRT, buffering gives delayed or missing packets a chance to arrive or be retransmitted, which can improve continuity on a challenging link while adding transport delay. For HLS, Apple’s Low-Latency HLS authoring guidance includes constraints tied to round-trip time; its one-second part target is not a promise of one-second playback delay. When comparing services, ask what the stated latency measures and under what conditions.

Common selection mistakes

  • Comparing unlike workflow stages: viewer delivery and contribution transport solve different problems. A service may use one protocol at ingest and another for playback.
  • Treating a protocol name as a performance guarantee: implementation, network path, buffering, and devices affect the outcome.
  • Assuming universal compatibility: check the specific encoder, ingest endpoint, player, and target devices. Apple’s HLS authoring requirements are platform-specific, and services can differ in feature support.
  • Optimizing for latency without considering resilience: retransmission and buffering can help with packet loss, but buffer time is part of the delay trade-off.
  • Reading a low-latency setting as total delay: distinguish transport or packaging targets from capture-to-screen performance.

For prerecorded YouTube streams, protocol choice may not be the main problem

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, the practical question may be how to keep the broadcast running rather than which protocol to configure. StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos and playlists to YouTube: upload a recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live.
