Brooke Martin and iCPooch CEO James Pelland asked the Sharks for $150,000 in exchange for 20% of the company. They left without a deal. The pitch, which aired in March 2015, introduced a device designed to let owners video chat with their dogs and dispense treats remotely.

Watch the Shark Tank pitch and read GeekWire’s contemporaneous recap.

What was iCPooch?

iCPooch was a home device paired with software that let a pet owner connect by video with a dog and remotely release a treat. Martin has said the idea came from concern about her golden retriever, Kayla, when the dog was alone. The product was designed around that problem; that account does not establish that iCPooch clinically treated or reduced separation anxiety.

Martin says she first presented the idea at Startup Weekend Spokane when she was 12. The company was founded in 2012 and later developed the concept into a hardware-and-software product. Martin’s account of iCPooch describes its origin and development.

Watch the pitch: what happened in the tank?

Martin appeared with CEO James Pelland. The pair sought $150,000 for 20% equity and received no investment offer. In GeekWire’s pitch recap, the Sharks’ concerns included whether dogs would engage with video chat, the company’s early sales, and the need for an additional tablet. The device could also work with a smartphone. Those were the investors’ questions about usability and the business—not proof that the product could not work.

After the appearance, Martin told GeekWire: “I realized that it isn’t about doing whatever it takes to get the deal, but about doing what it takes to find the right person to form an ideal partnership.” She also described the experience as “extremely unique and like nothing else I have ever encountered.” GeekWire’s interview with Martin covers her preparation and experience on the show.

What happened to iCPooch after Shark Tank?

Martin says iCPooch shut down in 2017, after three years in the marketplace. The original product is therefore not a currently available or supported iCPooch service, based on her account. The pitch remains a snapshot of an ambitious product from a teenage founder—not evidence that the company secured a Shark Tank deal or continued operating.
