Village of the Damned is the title of two science-fiction horror films: Wolf Rilla’s 1960 British original and John Carpenter’s 1995 remake. Both draw on John Wyndham’s 1957 novel The Midwich Cuckoos, about a village blackout followed by the birth of children who are anything but ordinary.

What is Village of the Damned about?

In the 1960 original, a mysterious blackout leaves a quiet English village unconscious. The women later become pregnant, and the children born afterward are unusually intelligent and unsettling. The story’s tension comes from the growing realization that the children have a sinister purpose—and from the parents’ struggle to understand what has happened to their families.

The film adapts John Wyndham’s novel The Midwich Cuckoos, first published in 1957. The Midwich Cuckoos was also the original film’s working title.

Is the 1995 Village of the Damned a remake?

Yes. John Carpenter directed the 1995 film, which AFI describes as based on both Wyndham’s novel and the 1960 film. Its story moves the premise to an American village, distinguishing it from the English setting of Rilla’s original.

How do the two films differ?

Film Director and setting Principal credited cast Catalog runtime
1960 original Wolf Rilla; an English village George Sanders, Barbara Shelley and Martin Stephens 77 minutes (BFI); 77–78 minutes (AFI Catalog)
1995 remake John Carpenter; an American village Christopher Reeve, Kirstie Alley and Linda Kozlowski; AFI also lists Michael Paré and Meredith Salenger 98 minutes (AFI Catalog)

These are catalog listings, not guarantees of the runtime of every cut or home-media edition. AFI’s separate Watch page lists the remake at 99 minutes, while its Catalog lists 98.

Who made the 1960 original?

AFI credits Wolf Rilla as director, with a screenplay by Stirling Silliphant, Rilla and George Barclay. Barclay was a pseudonym used by producer Ronald Kinnoch. George Sanders, Barbara Shelley and Martin Stephens are among the film’s credited stars. MGM is listed as the production company, and location filming took place in Letchmore Heath, England.

Who made the 1995 remake?

AFI credits John Carpenter as director and David Himmelstein as writer. Michael Preger and Sandy King are credited as producers, and Universal Pictures as the production and distribution company. The cast includes Christopher Reeve, Kirstie Alley, Linda Kozlowski, Michael Paré and Meredith Salenger.

Which version should you watch?

The 1960 original is the choice for the English-village story and Rilla’s adaptation of Wyndham; the 1995 film offers Carpenter’s remake set in an American village, with a different cast and production. Which is more frightening or more effective is a matter of taste, not a catalog fact. A BFI page for the remake showed a BFI Player home-viewing option when accessed, but that does not establish current availability in every country.
