Who is in the cast?
- Anne Hathaway as Verity Crawford: A celebrated bestselling author who can no longer complete her work after suffering a serious injury.
- Dakota Johnson as Lowen Ashleigh: A struggling writer hired to finish the remaining books in Verity’s successful series.
- Josh Hartnett as Jeremy Crawford: Verity’s husband, whose connection to the manuscript becomes important to Lowen’s investigation.

Amazon MGM Studios has confirmed the principal cast and these supporting roles, but its current announcement does not provide detailed biographies or complete character arcs for the supporting performers. More specific claims about those characters should therefore be treated cautiously until the studio releases additional material.
Who directed and wrote Verity?
Michael Showalter directs the film. The current official Amazon MGM Studios credit lists Nick Antosca and Colleen Hoover as the writers.
There is also a longer development history behind the screenplay. A March 2025 Variety report described earlier work on different screenplay versions by Hoover and Lauren Levine, Hillary Seitz, Angela LaManna, Will Honley, and April Maguire. Those names belong to the reported development process and should not be confused with the film’s current official writing credit unless a later source confirms additional final credits.
What is the movie about?
Verity follows Lowen Ashleigh, a writer facing financial trouble who accepts an unusual professional opportunity: completing the remaining novels in the series created by the famous author Verity Crawford.

Lowen must determine whether the manuscript is a truthful account of what happened or another piece of fiction designed to manipulate whoever finds it. As she becomes more involved with the Crawford household, the job turns into something more dangerous and personal. The film’s official premise emphasizes the unstable boundary between fiction and reality, as well as themes of manipulation, attraction, professional ambition, and obsession.
This is a spoiler-light overview. The novel contains major revelations, but the available official movie material does not establish exactly how closely the finished adaptation will follow the book’s ending or other twists.
What does the trailer reveal?
The current marketing presents Verity as a psychological thriller centered on three elements:
Recommended Free Tools
- Lowen’s appointment as ghostwriter for Verity’s unfinished series;
- her arrival at the isolated Crawford estate; and
- the discovery of a disturbing manuscript that may expose the family’s secrets—or may be manipulating Lowen itself.
Amazon MGM Studios released a trailer and updated its official film article on August 11, 2026, with the newest trailer. The trailer campaign is therefore the clearest current news development, alongside the confirmation of the October 2 theatrical release. It is not yet evidence that every event shown in promotional footage represents the final plot in precisely the same form.

Should you read the book before the movie?
If you want to read the source material before the adaptation arrives, Colleen Hoover’s Verity is available in print, Kindle, and Audible formats. The novel is the direct source for the film’s premise and provides the background for Lowen, Verity, Jeremy, the Crawford estate, and the manuscript at the center of the story.
Readers who prefer a physical copy can choose Colleen Hoover’s Verity in print. Those who want a digital format can use the Verity Kindle edition, while listeners can choose the Verity audiobook. Availability, pricing, edition details, and regional catalog information should be checked at the time of purchase. Amazon’s cited information also identified the title as being in the Kindle Unlimited catalog in that context, but subscription catalogs can change by market and date.
Reading first may be useful for viewers who want to compare the adaptation’s choices with Hoover’s original psychological thriller. It also carries a clear spoiler risk: the book’s revelations may affect how you experience the movie, particularly if the film retains its major turns.

Why the release date changed
The film was previously reported as having a May 15, 2026, wide theatrical date. Amazon MGM Studios’ later official announcements moved the listed release to October 2, 2026. The available information confirms the change but does not explain the studio’s scheduling rationale, so claims about the reason—such as reshoots, post-production, competition, or audience testing—would be speculation.

What to expect from the adaptation
The central appeal of Verity is not a conventional mystery with a simple investigation. Lowen’s professional assignment places her inside the world she is trying to interpret. The manuscript may be evidence, a confession, a creative exercise, or a trap. That ambiguity makes the story’s basic question unusually important: is Lowen uncovering the truth, or is she being drawn into someone else’s narrative?
The casting also places the story’s three key relationships at the center of the film. Hathaway’s Verity represents the famous author whose voice continues to dominate the household despite her injury. Johnson’s Lowen is both an outsider and a writer capable of understanding Verity’s methods. Hartnett’s Jeremy occupies the position of husband and potential source of information, but the official premise deliberately leaves the family’s emotional and factual dynamics unresolved.
Until the movie is released, the safest expectation is a psychological thriller about authorship, secrecy, and competing versions of reality—not a fully verified account of every twist from the novel.
Bottom line
Verity is currently scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on October 2, 2026. Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson, and Josh Hartnett lead the cast, with Michael Showalter directing and Nick Antosca and Colleen Hoover credited as writers. The story follows struggling writer Lowen Ashleigh after she is hired to complete Verity Crawford’s book series and discovers a disturbing manuscript at the Crawford estate.
