What is Sunrise on the Reaping about?
The film is a Haymitch-origin story. Long before he became Katniss Everdeen’s mentor, Haymitch Abernathy was a teenager from District 12 who was selected for the 50th Hunger Games.
The 50th Games were unusual even by the Capitol’s cruel standards. As the Second Quarter Quell, they required each district to send twice the usual number of tributes. That creates an arena with 48 competitors instead of the standard 24.
The story begins on the morning of the reaping. Haymitch wants to survive the day and stay with the girl he loves, Lenore Dove Baird, but his selection takes him away from District 12 and places him in a Capitol spectacle designed to turn the tributes against one another.
He travels to the Capitol with three other District 12 tributes: a close young friend, a compulsive odds-maker, and an arrogant girl from town. The official synopsis presents the Games as a carefully constructed trap intended to make Haymitch fail, while suggesting that his resistance could have consequences beyond the arena.
That is the spoiler-light premise. It explains the film’s central conflict without revealing the outcome of the Games or later character developments from the novel.
The cast of Sunrise on the Reaping
Joseph Zada leads the film as young Haymitch Abernathy. The role was previously associated with Woody Harrelson in the original Hunger Games films, but Harrelson has not been announced as returning for this film.

Which original Hunger Games characters return in younger form?
Several announced roles are younger versions of characters audiences know from the earlier films. Zada takes over Haymitch’s role from Harrelson; Fanning plays an earlier Effie Trinket than Elizabeth Banks’s version; Culkin plays Caesar Flickerman, previously played by Stanley Tucci; and Plemons portrays a younger Plutarch Heavensbee, the character previously played by Philip Seymour Hoffman.
These are recast younger versions for a story set decades earlier. The announced casting does not mean that Harrelson, Banks, Tucci, Hoffman, Jennifer Lawrence, or other legacy performers are appearing in the new film.
Who directed and wrote the film?
Francis Lawrence directs Sunrise on the Reaping. He previously directed The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Mockingjay – Part 1, Mockingjay – Part 2, and The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes.
Billy Ray adapted Collins’s novel for the screenplay. Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson are producers, with Lawrence also identified as a producer in later film coverage.

The book behind the movie
Suzanne Collins’s Sunrise on the Reaping was published on March 18, 2025. Scholastic identifies it as the fifth novel in The Hunger Games series and the literary source for the film. The book was released in print, digital, and audio formats in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand.
If you want the complete story before the adaptation arrives, Sunrise on the Reaping by Suzanne Collins is the direct place to start. Reading the novel will reveal more than the film’s spoiler-light marketing, including the full shape of Haymitch’s relationship with the other District 12 tributes and the political meaning of his Games.
Scholastic has announced several later editions:
- Trade paperback: August 4, 2026
- movie-tie-in paperback: September 1, 2026
- Five-book paperback boxed set: September 1, 2026
The announced ISBN for the movie-tie-in paperback is 979-8-225-04447-3. The five-book boxed set has the announced ISBN 979-8-225-04444-2. Retail prices, inventory, regional listings, and availability should be checked close to publication, particularly for the future tie-in edition.
Where does the film fit in the Hunger Games timeline?
There are two useful ways to place the film in the franchise:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Publication order: It follows The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes as Collins’s next published prequel novel.
- In-universe chronology: It takes place 40 years after The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes and 24 years before The Hunger Games.
The story is therefore not a direct continuation of Katniss’s personal arc. It returns to a familiar victor and mentor, but shifts the focus to Haymitch’s adolescence, his own Games, and the experiences that shaped the person audiences later meet in District 12.
