The NFL and Roc Nation presented his selection as recognition of his musical influence and performance skills. Separately, Apple Music openly built an extensive marketing campaign around the show. Those facts support a conclusion about artist stature and sponsor promotion—not a claim about the NFL’s private motive or what fans as a whole wanted.
Why did the NFL choose Usher?
The NFL announced on September 24, 2023, that Usher would headline the Apple Music Super Bowl LVIII Halftime Show at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on February 11, 2024. CBS was set to air the game. The announcement was made jointly by Apple Music, the NFL, and Roc Nation. The NFL’s announcement emphasized Usher’s cultural influence and performance ability.
NFL head of music Seth Dudowsky called Usher an icon whose music had left a cultural mark. Roc Nation’s Jay-Z praised his singing, choreography, and career. Usher described the booking as “an honor of a lifetime” and said it let him check a Super Bowl performance off his bucket list. These are the organizations’ public explanations and the artist’s response; they do not reveal every factor behind the private selection process.
Is the NFL trying to placate fans?
“Placate” would mean choosing a performer to soothe or win over fans after dissatisfaction. The available sources do not establish that the NFL selected Usher for that purpose. They also do not provide a representative poll or other reliable measure showing that fans broadly wanted—or opposed—his selection. Without that evidence, it would be misleading to describe a single shared fan reaction or present fan appeasement as the NFL’s motive.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The distinction matters: a public rationale for a performer choice is not proof of private intent, and marketing activity is not evidence of fan sentiment. The evidence supports describing what the NFL and Roc Nation said about Usher and what Apple said about promoting the event, while leaving the NFL’s unreported internal motive unclaimed.
How did Apple Music promote the show?
Apple’s sponsor campaign is the clearest evidence of deliberate promotion. In a February 5, 2024, release, Apple described its “Road to Halftime” campaign, which included Usher-curated playlists, interviews, radio programming, Spatial Audio mixes, an artist feature, Fitness+ programming, and promotion of his album COMING HOME. Apple also said fans would be able to access the performance after the show. The release identified COMING HOME as Usher’s ninth studio album, with a February 9, 2024 release date.

In a February 9, 2024, report, The Associated Press described Apple’s strategy to extend attention beyond the performance and connect it to Apple Music and the company’s wider services. Apple vice president of Apple Music and Beats Oliver Schusser said, “We’re trying to extend the campaign to more than just a show on a Sunday afternoon.” Apple vice president of marketing communications Tor Myhren put it plainly: “From a marketing standpoint, we approach it like a product launch.”
That is direct evidence of Apple’s commercial intent as sponsor. Apple took over the halftime-show sponsorship in 2022, replacing Pepsi, which had held the position for a decade, according to AP. The change in sponsor preceded Usher’s 2024 performance; it was not the date of the show. Apple’s promotional campaign does not, by itself, show why the NFL selected Usher.

What does the response to the show tell us?
Audience figures and awards can describe reach or industry recognition, but neither establishes fan approval or the NFL’s selection motive. AP’s February 2024 report said Rihanna’s preceding Apple Music-sponsored halftime performance had drawn more than 121 million viewers. That figure refers to Rihanna’s show, not Usher’s, and AP’s cited passage does not name the original measurement publisher.
In a 2025 retrospective, the NFL reported that Usher’s performance received three 2024 Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Variety Special (LIVE). That establishes recognition by the Television Academy, not a measure of audience satisfaction. The nomination information appears in the NFL’s September 28, 2025 report.
