Its branching story can still make a night of familiar horror tropes tense; the new camera work and visual overhaul strengthen the atmosphere. The “Until Yawn” charge fits best for returning players: the story and core play remain largely intact, while additions are modest. For newcomers, this is the more compelling version to consider.
Does Until Dawn’s slasher story still work?
Yes. The game puts you in control of eight young characters during a night on Blackwood Mountain, where dialogue choices, survival decisions and quick-time events can shape who lives and how events unfold. That structure remains the remake’s strongest asset: it makes familiar slasher setups engaging by giving the player responsibility for the group’s fate.

PlayStation describes the game as a single-player, interactive narrative experience and says choices can lead to hundreds of ending variations. That is a description of possible outcomes, not a precise count of wholly distinct endings. You can also make decisions together while watching the story, though the game itself is designed as a single-player experience.
The 2024 edition keeps the original events at its center. Ballistic Moon creative director Neil McEwan said the team’s intention “has not been to alter the events of that fateful night.” The result is not a new story so much as a familiar one presented with a substantial technical makeover.

What changed in the 2024 release?
Released for PS5 and PC on October 4, 2024, the remake was rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5. It updates character models, environments, effects and animations, relights scenes, and adds ray-tracing features. It also mixes fixed camera angles with over-the-shoulder views, revises the prologue, adds Hunger totems and small areas, and expands accessibility and usability options. The official announcement outlines those changes at PlayStation.Blog.
These changes mostly serve the same story rather than substantially changing its structure. In its PS5 review, TechRadar found that the visual update complements the game’s cinematic atmosphere, while noting that the story and core gameplay remain mostly unchanged and that the new story content is slight.

On PS5: atmosphere and controller features
The revised lighting, environments and character presentation help the game’s cinematic horror land more convincingly. The camera changes also shift how scenes are framed, without turning the remake into a different kind of game. PS5 adds DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers; the official feature list also includes customizable controls, audio-visual options, adjustable quick-time-event settings and enhanced visual cues for exploration. These are meaningful presentation and usability upgrades, not a new campaign.
On PC: flexibility with a platform requirement
The PC edition supports unlocked frame rates, 21:9 ultrawide displays, an optional 23.9:1 cinematic ratio, multiple peripherals and Steam Input. Ray tracing is available on supported hardware, so the PC’s enhanced graphics depend on the player’s system. A PlayStation Network account is required to play on PC. PlayStation’s PC feature announcement lists the display and input options.

Is it worth replaying or buying again?
For someone new to Until Dawn, the remake packages a strong choice-driven horror story with a noticeably refreshed presentation and useful accessibility options. Both PC Gamer and TechRadar were more receptive to it as an entry point than as a reason for returning players to revisit a story they already know.
For returning players, the case is harder to make. The new prologue material, collectibles, camera approach and technical work add texture, but the central events and gameplay remain familiar. TechRadar reported a $60 launch price in its October 15, 2024 review; that is historical launch-price context, not a current price. Check the relevant storefront for today’s edition and price before buying.

PC Gamer’s review also reported audio and subtitle glitches, missing character models and quick-time-event prompts that could become stuck in the PC version it reviewed, alongside the PSN account requirement. Those are review-specific findings, not a guarantee of how a current patched build behaves. If you are considering the PC version, check recent player reports and patch notes for your hardware and storefront rather than assuming those problems persist—or that they have all been resolved.
Verdict: a strong horror story, a cautious recommendation for veterans
Until Dawn still makes its choices matter, and its refreshed visuals and sound presentation suit the story’s cinematic ambitions. The remake’s additions are real but restrained. That makes it a good way for newcomers to experience the game, while the “Until Yawn” verdict is more persuasive for anyone who recently played the original and wants a substantially different story or campaign.
