Spoilers for Season 2, episode 3, “The Path.” Dina has learned something about Abby’s group that could send Ellie after Joel’s killers. In “The Path,” her decision to hold that information back becomes part of a larger question: how much truth can Ellie and Dina share while grief is pushing them toward revenge?
What happens in “The Path”?
Written by Craig Mazin and directed by Peter Hoar, “The Path” aired on HBO on April 27, 2025. It begins after the infected attack on Jackson and Joel’s death. Ellie wakes in the hospital screaming from memories of what happened; three months later, she is cleared to leave. She visits Joel’s grave at sunrise, then turns her grief into a plan: find the people responsible, with Dina at her side.
Dina says she has actionable information about Abby’s group. A yellow-triangle patch bearing a wolf’s head and the letters “W.L.F.” gives the pair a lead and a destination: Seattle. They tell Tommy what they know. He supports the objective, but Jackson’s council votes 8-3 against sending them. Ellie and Dina leave anyway, travelling west on horseback with help from Seth.
What is Dina’s secret, and why does she keep it from Ellie?
Dina has identified a clue connecting Abby’s group to the W.L.F., and she has not told Ellie about it until this point. The episode makes that withheld intelligence the hinge between grief in Jackson and the Seattle mission: once Ellie has the lead, she can pursue Abby’s group.
#1 Best Overall
The episode’s framing makes the omission emotionally legible without making it harmless. Dina and Ellie are both grieving, but they are not approaching the mission from the same place: Ellie is driven by revenge, while Dina’s choice to disclose what she knows marks a shift toward acting together. The story leaves room to see her silence as an attempt to manage a painful truth—and as a breach of trust that the pair must carry onto the road.
Why do Ellie and Dina go to Seattle?
The W.L.F. patch points them toward Seattle, where they believe Abby’s group can be found. Their journey is not an expedition approved by Jackson: the council’s 8-3 vote rejects it, so the two leave without the town’s backing. Tommy supports their goal, and Seth helps them get out.
Seattle is therefore both a practical destination and the next stage of Ellie’s revenge. At the episode’s end, Ellie and Dina arrive believing the W.L.F. is relatively insignificant. The closing scene, in which Manny communicates with another W.L.F. member, undercuts that assumption and signals that they have badly underestimated the force they are entering.
Who are the Seraphites and the W.L.F.?
“The Path” introduces two factions that will matter in Seattle. The Seraphites, also called Scars, are a religious group; the episode marks them out with facial scars and weapons including bows and swords. The W.L.F. is shown as a disciplined, heavily armed force. The contrast matters: Ellie and Dina have a target in mind, but Seattle is not simply a place where they can find Abby without encountering organized groups and competing dangers.

How does the episode differ from the game?
The most clearly documented structural change is Jackson’s council vote. The show has the council reject the expedition 8-3; that town-hall vote does not occur in The Last of Us Part II. By putting the decision on screen, the adaptation makes Ellie and Dina’s departure a conflict not only with the danger ahead but also with the community they are leaving.
The episode also uses its closing scene to establish the W.L.F.’s scale while Ellie and Dina still underestimate it. That early warning gives the audience a different view of the Seattle mission’s risk than the pair have at the moment they arrive. The episode’s emphasis is on getting the two characters onto the road and setting up the factions that shape what follows.
