Jane Doe is Lucy Cook, and Shane Maguire did not kill her. The finale reveals that Yosemite chief ranger Paul Souter was Lucy’s biological father. He chased her on El Capitan and fired a warning shot; already injured, Lucy ran toward the edge and jumped. The series frames her death as accidental, though Paul’s actions set the fatal moment in motion.
Who was Jane Doe in Untamed?
Jane Doe was Lucy Cook, a girl who disappeared from Yosemite in 2012. By the time the series’ opening case begins, she has returned to the park. The finale’s sixth episode, “All Trails Lead Here,” is where Turner uncovers the truth about her death and the secrets behind it, according to Netflix Tudum’s ending explainer and the official episode guide.
Who killed Lucy Cook?
Paul Souter, Yosemite’s chief ranger, is Lucy’s biological father and the person whose actions directly precipitate her fatal jump. The official account describes the death as accidental, not an intentional murder: Paul chased Lucy on El Capitan and fired a warning shot to get her attention. Lucy was already injured, ran toward the edge, and jumped.
Netflix Tudum summarizes the reveal as, “Her father did — at least, accidentally.” That is a concise description, but the qualification matters: Paul is her biological father, and the story does not portray him as deliberately pushing or shooting her.

Why did Paul chase Lucy on El Capitan?
After Lucy’s mother’s husband became violent, Paul arranged for Lucy to be taken to a foster home in Nevada. The man who claimed to be her father in that situation was not her biological father. Lucy escaped the foster home and eventually returned to Yosemite.
Years later, Lucy threatened to expose Paul’s paternity unless he paid her. He chased her on El Capitan, apparently trying to stop or confront her, and fired the warning shot. The confrontation, her existing injury, and her jump combine to make Paul responsible for the fatal chain of events, even though the ending frames the death as accidental. Co-creator Mark L. Smith describes Paul as someone who “was trying to protect his family” but “missed one of them”; he also says, “He’s not a cruel person.”
Rank #2
Was Shane Maguire the villain?
Shane is an apparent suspect in Lucy’s death, but he is not the person who caused her fatal jump. Lucy’s phone connects her to him, and his abusive behavior and involvement in Yosemite’s drug trade make him a credible threat. Those details explain why the investigation points toward him, but they do not make him Lucy’s killer.
| Person | Connection to the case | What the ending establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Shane Maguire | Lucy’s phone connects her to him; he is abusive and involved in the park’s drug trade. | He is a separate antagonist, but he did not cause Lucy’s fatal jump. |
| Paul Souter | Yosemite chief ranger and Lucy’s biological father. | He chased Lucy and fired a warning shot; she jumped while injured. The series frames her death as accidental. |
So “true villain” is an imperfect label for the ending. Shane’s conduct makes him a villain in his own right, while Paul’s role is that of a father whose attempt to intervene leads accidentally to his daughter’s death.

How does Lucy’s story connect to Caleb Turner’s case?
The series runs Lucy’s death alongside the older case involving Kyle and Jill Turner’s son, Caleb. Sean Sanderson killed Caleb. Jill secretly hired Shane to kill Sanderson without telling Kyle, and co-creator Mark L. Smith says that secrecy is what split the couple. These are separate crimes: Sean killed Caleb, Jill hired Shane to kill Sean, and Paul’s actions led to Lucy’s fatal jump.
The two mysteries meet thematically in the question of what people will do to protect their families. Co-creator Elle Smith puts the series’ central question this way: “What would you do to protect your family?”
Rank #4
What happens to Turner at the end?
Turner remains suspended from his job. He says goodbye to Naya Vasquez, leaves her the horse he taught her to ride, gives her son Caleb’s toy cars, and leaves Yosemite. Netflix Tudum describes his departure as a decision to leave Caleb and the park behind and move on.

Yes. Netflix announced on March 4, 2026, that season two was in production on O’ahu and Hawai‘i Island. The new story sends Turner to investigate a death at Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park; it is a new case, not a reopening of the Lucy Cook mystery. In the announcement, co-creator Mark L. Smith said, “Elle and I envisioned it as a stand-alone six episodes.” Read the season-two announcement for the continuation details.
