Cinematic black bars are usually the unused space created when a video’s aspect ratio does not match the shape of the screen. A wide image, such as 2.39:1, fitted correctly inside a 16:9 television leaves horizontal bars above and below; this is called letterboxing. The bars preserve the complete composition and keep faces and objects from being stretched.

You can remove them only by accepting a trade-off: crop or zoom away part of the picture, stretch the geometry, or keep the bars. In most cases, keeping them is the most accurate way to watch the source.

Black bars protect the original picture

Aspect ratio is the relationship between an image’s width and height. A 16:9 display is about 1.78:1, while a 2.39:1 film is much wider and shorter. To show the entire film at the correct proportions, a player scales it until its width fits the display. The unfilled vertical area becomes black.

For example, fitting a 2.39:1 image to 1,920 pixels of width produces an active picture about 803 pixels high. On a 1,920×1,080 display, roughly 277 vertical pixels remain, or about 138 pixels of matte above and below. This is an illustration; encoded dimensions, subtitles, player settings and baked-in mattes can change the visible result.

Netflix explains that titles filmed wider than a viewer’s screen may show bars because preserving the original format is preferable to stretching the image. The service also notes that zooming can trim the sides of the picture (Netflix Help Center).

Aspect ratios you will encounter

Adobe distinguishes frame aspect ratio (the shape of the video frame) from pixel aspect ratio (the shape of each recorded pixel). They must be interpreted separately; a wrong pixel-aspect setting can make an image look distorted even when the frame dimensions seem correct (Adobe Premiere documentation).

Ratio Typical use How it may appear on a 16:9 screen
4:3 Older television and archival footage Vertical side bars (pillarboxing)
16:9 Modern television, computers and much online video Fills the frame when the source also uses 16:9
1.85:1 Common theatrical widescreen format Small top-and-bottom bars
2.39:1 (approximately 2.40:1) Very wide theatrical “scope” presentation Larger top-and-bottom bars
9:16 Vertical smartphone video Large side bars on a horizontal display
1:1 Square social-media video Side bars on a widescreen display

“21:9” is often used as a consumer shorthand for an ultrawide screen, but mathematically it is 2.33:1, not exactly 2.39:1. Ratios such as 1.85:1, 2.00:1, 2.35:1 and 2.39:1 are related widescreen choices, not interchangeable specifications.

Letterboxing, pillarboxing and windowboxing

Letterboxing

Letterboxing adds horizontal mattes above and below a wider image so the entire width remains visible in a narrower frame. The term can describe bars generated by a player or black pixels already included in the file. Adobe’s frame-aspect-ratio reference also describes letterboxing as the alternative to cropping a widescreen image (Adobe frame-aspect-ratio documentation).

Pillarboxing

Pillarboxing adds vertical bars on the left and right when a narrow image is shown inside a wider frame. A 4:3 television episode on a 16:9 television and a 9:16 phone clip in a desktop player are normal examples, not evidence that the display is faulty.

Windowboxing

Windowboxing produces bars on all four sides. It can happen when a source already contains bars and a second conversion adds more, when archival material is protected through several delivery formats, or when a broadcaster preserves an earlier matte. If the active picture looks unusually small, investigate windowboxing before choosing Zoom.

Why streaming titles can look different on different screens

A title may contain shots with more than one intended ratio. A production can switch from a wide frame to a taller frame for selected scenes, including large-format or IMAX-style sequences. The bars may therefore shrink or disappear during those shots by design.

The visible matte can come from the title master, encoding, the app, the television or another device in the playback chain. Netflix delivery guidance recognizes both letterboxed and pillarboxed outcomes when source and delivery compositions differ (Netflix Partner Help: DCP specifications). Its archival workflow guidance also warns that mixed shot ratios can introduce letterboxing or pillarboxing during encoding (Netflix Partner Help: archival aspect-ratio workflow). It is therefore too broad to say that a streaming service always “adds” the bars in one particular place.

Are the bars part of the video file?

Player-generated bars

The file contains only the active image, while the player or display supplies the surrounding black. This keeps the source flexible: an ultrawide display or another correctly matched frame can show more of the image without first removing encoded pixels.

Baked-in bars

The black pixels are encoded into the video itself. They remain in every player, consume picture area and can require another crop for mobile or social delivery. Repeated resizing and recompression can also reduce quality, although the mere presence of black pixels does not damage the active image.

How to tell which you have

  1. Pause the video and change the player’s Fit, Original or Zoom mode. If the boundary moves while the picture remains intact, the player is likely generating the matte.
  2. Open the same file in another player or on another device.
  3. Inspect the file’s frame dimensions and look for black pixels inside the active image.
  4. Check for a second set of bars after the source is placed in an editing timeline; that indicates a duplicated matte.

Black bars are not a quality problem by themselves

Visible unused display area is different from lost image information. Letterboxing preserves the whole frame and its geometry. Cropping discards part of the frame. Stretching retains the edges but changes the relative width and height of everything in it. Quality problems arise when bars are permanently encoded, when a second device adds another matte, when footage is repeatedly resized, or when non-square pixels are interpreted incorrectly.

Black bars also do not make footage inherently cinematic. A wide frame can support a theatrical composition, but cinematic impact depends on lighting, lenses, production design, movement, blocking, sound and editing. A 2.39:1 crop can make vertical subjects and close-ups harder to compose, while a taller ratio may suit a particular scene or device.

Should you zoom in to remove them?

Goal Best choice Trade-off
See the complete original image Keep the bars or use Original/Fit Unused screen area
Fill the screen without geometric distortion Zoom or crop Usually loses the left and right edges of a wide image
Fill every pixel at any cost Stretch/Wide mode Faces and objects become unnaturally wide or tall
Fix apparent double bars Inspect source, timeline and player settings Requires troubleshooting

Keep the default presentation when accuracy matters. Use Zoom or Crop when you knowingly accept lost picture—for example, on a small screen where unused area prevents comfortable viewing. Check subtitles and captions first: some are placed in the matte, while others sit near the picture edge and may be cut off. Avoid Stretch, Wide or similar modes when correct proportions matter. The cost of zooming is normally the sides of the wide image, not extra detail.

How filmmakers create a widescreen look

Native widescreen capture

The camera and production workflow are designed for the intended wide frame. Composition is judged in that ratio from the start, so the editor is not hiding important action behind a later overlay.

Cropping a standard frame

A 16:9 recording can be reframed to a wider active image by removing picture at the top and bottom. This is a real compositional crop and should be monitored while shots are composed.

Output mattes and overlays

An editor can place black bars over a 16:9 image to preview or simulate a 2.39:1 presentation. Adobe describes this as a post-production way to create an ultrawide effect (Adobe Creative Cloud: cinematic black bars). An overlay is convenient, but it can conceal faces, titles or action that still exists underneath; it does not transform ordinary footage into anamorphic footage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Anamorphic capture

An anamorphic lens or digital process records a horizontally squeezed wide image that is later unsqueezed. It can produce distinctive optical characteristics and is fundamentally different from adding black rectangles or changing a display setting. Anamorphic capture does not automatically mean that black bars will be present.

A practical delivery workflow

  1. Choose the platforms and delivery frames before editing.
  2. Set the intended active ratio and compose with crop guides or a monitored matte.
  3. Keep a clean master without permanently baked-in bars whenever possible.
  4. Create platform-specific crops or mattes at export rather than forcing one file to suit every screen.
  5. Check subtitles, titles, faces and edge-of-frame action in the exported versions.
  6. Play a short test export in more than one player and on more than one screen.

Troubleshooting unexpected bars in an edit

  1. Check source dimensions: identify whether the clip is 16:9, 4:3, vertical or another ratio.
  2. Check pixel aspect ratio: correct any anamorphic or non-square-pixel interpretation before changing the frame.
  3. Check the sequence or timeline: confirm that its frame shape matches the intended delivery.
  4. Inspect the actual image: determine whether black pixels are in the file or generated by the preview.
  5. Review scale mode: Fit, Fill, Crop and Scale to Frame produce different results.
  6. Look for duplicate mattes: remove either the baked-in bars or the added overlay, not picture that is needed.
  7. Check export settings: a forced frame size or ratio can add a new matte.
  8. Test a short export: verify it in a separate player before rendering the full project.

Adobe recommends reconciling pixel aspect ratio before frame aspect ratio because a misinterpreted pixel ratio can create an incorrect apparent frame shape (Adobe Premiere documentation).

What the bars mean in practice

  • Horizontal bars usually indicate a wider source fitted inside a shorter frame.
  • Vertical bars usually indicate a narrower source fitted inside a wider frame.
  • Bars on all four sides often indicate stacked conversions or an already-matted source.
  • Changing bars can be intentional when a film changes aspect ratio between scenes.
  • Colored or textured mattes serve the same geometric purpose even when they are not black.
