Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteHulu does not currently publish a public, universal definition for “Error 97.” The code can accompany an app, device, network, account, title-specific, compatibility, or Hulu-side problem. Start by finding the pattern: test another title, another device or browser, and another network before making disruptive changes.
This guide follows Hulu’s published troubleshooting paths while clearly separating confirmed guidance from diagnostic inference. Check the official Hulu Help Center for current support and device information.
What Hulu Error 97 means
The number alone is not enough to identify the failure. Hulu’s publicly indexed Help Center does not currently provide a dedicated explanation for Error 97, so it is not responsible to label it automatically a server error, authentication error, or network error. Search results also include Error 97 codes for unrelated streaming services, which should not be treated as Hulu documentation.
Record the complete on-screen message, not just the number. Also note:

- Whether it appears when Hulu opens, during sign-in, while browsing, or when playback starts
- Your exact device model, operating-system version, Hulu app version, and approximate time of failure
- Your country or service region
- Whether every title fails or only one episode or movie
- Whether Hulu works on Wi-Fi, Ethernet, cellular data, another device, or a browser
Those details turn an ambiguous code into a useful troubleshooting pattern.
First determine the scope of the problem
Run these low-risk comparisons before resetting anything:
| Test | Result | Likely direction |
|---|---|---|
| Play another Hulu title | Only one title fails | Title or content-specific issue |
| Open Hulu on another device | Other device works | Original device or app installation |
| Use a desktop browser | Browser works but app fails | App data, installation, or device software |
| Try another network | Hulu works elsewhere | Router, ISP, DNS, VPN, proxy, or filtering |
| Open another streaming service | Several services fail | Broader device or network problem |
| Test several devices and networks | Everything fails | Possible Hulu-side incident or account/service issue |
This matrix is a diagnostic method, not an official Hulu interpretation of Error 97. A failure limited to Live TV may involve home-network or location requirements that do not affect on-demand titles.
Fixes to try, in the safest order
1. Force-close Hulu and restart the device
- Exit Hulu completely; returning to the home screen may leave it running.
- Restart the TV, streaming player, phone, tablet, computer, or console normally.
- Open Hulu and try a different title.
This is quick, reversible, and does not change your account.
2. Test the connection
Use Hulu’s connection test and its internet-connection troubleshooting guidance. Test near the affected device, pause downloads and cloud backups, and try Ethernet if available. Moving closer to the router or using a less congested Wi-Fi band can help identify wireless instability. A test result is evidence about your connection, not a universal Error 97 speed requirement.
Briefly test cellular data or a different Wi-Fi network. If Hulu works there, focus on the original router, ISP, DNS configuration, VPN, proxy, or filtering.
3. Power-cycle the network
Power cycling is a troubleshooting measure, not a guaranteed change to your public IP address or Hulu account status:
- Close Hulu and turn off the streaming device.
- Unplug the modem and router.
- Wait several minutes; an official Hulu troubleshooting result describes an equipment cycle of approximately five minutes.
- Reconnect the modem and wait for it to stabilize.
- Reconnect the router and wait for Wi-Fi to return.
- Restart the streaming device and test Hulu.
Do not factory-reset the router as an early step; that erases network settings and rarely helps an isolated app problem.
4. Temporarily disable VPNs, proxies, and aggressive filtering
Hulu’s connection guidance includes proxy-related troubleshooting. A VPN or proxy can make a connection appear unsupported or unusual, while ad blockers, privacy tools, script blockers, DNS filters, and managed networks can interfere with playback. Disable them temporarily and test from your normal region. Do not change regions or use a VPN to bypass Hulu’s access or home-network rules.
5. Update Hulu, the device, and the browser
- Install Hulu updates from the relevant app store.
- Install operating-system, TV-firmware, Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, or console updates.
- Update your browser.
Do not assume a particular required version unless Hulu’s current device information specifies it.

6. Clear temporary data
Hulu provides browser-cache instructions. Clearing a cache removes temporary files and is usually the lower-risk reset. Clearing app data is deeper: it can sign you out and remove local settings or downloads. Menu names vary by platform.
7. Sign out and back in
Use this only after confirming that you know the Hulu email address and password. A fresh session can resolve an expired login, but it will not repair an unsupported device, an outage, or a blocked network.

8. Reinstall Hulu
Reinstalling rebuilds the app installation and is appropriate after updates, restarts, and cache clearing fail. It requires download time and a new sign-in, and may remove local downloads. Do not uninstall if you cannot currently access your account credentials.
Platform-specific instructions
Web browsers on Windows or Mac
- Close and reopen the browser, then try a supported alternative browser.
- Clear Hulu-related cookies and cached files using Hulu’s cache guide.
- Test a private or incognito window.
- Temporarily disable extensions, especially ad blockers, privacy tools, script blockers, and content filters.
- Restart the computer and try a wired connection if Wi-Fi is unstable.
Hulu’s general troubleshooting topics also include alternate browsers, cache clearing, computer restarts, and Ethernet testing: official troubleshooting result.
Android phones and tablets
- Force-stop Hulu and restart the device.
- Check Google Play for Hulu and Android updates.
- Try Settings → Apps → Hulu → Storage or Storage & cache → Clear cache; labels differ by manufacturer and Android version.
- If necessary, clear app data or reinstall, understanding that this signs you out and may remove downloads.
- Test cellular data briefly to separate Wi-Fi from app or device problems.
iPhone and iPad
- Force-close Hulu and restart the device.
- Update Hulu and iOS or iPadOS.
- If the problem remains, delete and reinstall Hulu, then sign in again.
iOS and iPadOS do not generally provide a universal Hulu “Clear Cache” button; offloading, deleting, or reinstalling is the usual app reset.
Roku
- Exit and reopen Hulu.
- Restart Roku through its system controls or power-cycle it.
- Check Roku and Hulu updates.
- Test another streaming app.
- Remove and reinstall Hulu only after the simpler steps fail.
Verify the exact model and region in Hulu’s supported Roku information and broader supported-device list.
Amazon Fire TV
- Force-stop Hulu.
- Clear its cache through the Fire TV app settings.
- Restart Fire TV.
- Update the app and Fire TV software.
- Clear data or reinstall only if needed; menu labels vary by Fire TV version.
Apple TV and smart TVs
- Quit Hulu fully or restart the television or Apple TV.
- Install Hulu and system updates.
- Clear app data if the television provides that control.
- Reinstall Hulu if supported.
Brand alone does not establish compatibility. Check the exact model, operating system, region, and whether Hulu is running as a standalone app or through an integrated platform. Consult Hulu’s supported devices and unsupported-device guidance. An older unsupported TV may require a supported external player or browser-compatible alternative; repeated router resets will not add support.
PlayStation and Xbox
- Quit Hulu completely and restart the console.
- Install console and Hulu updates.
- Test another app or online game feature.
- Reinstall Hulu if the problem is isolated to that app.
- Verify that the console model and region remain supported.
When the pattern points beyond a local fix
- Only one episode or movie fails: Do not reset the entire network first.
- Hulu works on your phone but not your TV: Focus on the TV app, firmware, device support, network settings, and any HDMI or DRM path.
- Hulu works on Wi-Fi but not cellular: Investigate the mobile carrier or Hulu’s network policy.
- Hulu works in a browser but not the app: Concentrate on app data, updates, and reinstalling.
- The issue began after an account or subscription change: Check authentication, billing, entitlement, or home-location messages instead of assuming playback is at fault.
- Many users report failures at once: Check Hulu’s official channels before repeatedly reinstalling apps.
Check compatibility before replacing hardware
A device can be new to you yet unsupported by Hulu, or an older model can lose support after platform changes. Check the exact model, country or service region, current operating-system support, and whether the app is standalone or integrated. Hulu’s current lists are at supported devices and unsupported devices. Do not buy a router, streaming stick, Ethernet cable, VPN, or paid support service until testing identifies a hardware or network need.
When to contact Hulu
Contact Hulu when Error 97 persists after testing another title and device, affects multiple devices on different networks, or appears with sign-in, billing, subscription, home-location, or entitlement messages. Contact support as well when your device is listed as unsupported, the problem began immediately after a Hulu or system update, or reinstalling and network testing made no difference.
Use the official Hulu Help Center, not phone numbers copied from unverified PDFs, scraped pages, or search advertisements. Hulu’s Help Center stated that live support was available 24 hours a day, seven days a week as of August 18, 2026; availability and contact options can change.
