Unicast sends data to one recipient, multicast sends it to a selected group, and broadcast sends it to all hosts within a network scope. IPv4 supports all three patterns; IPv6 has unicast and multicast but no broadcast address type. Which pattern is appropriate depends on who needs to receive the data and how the network handles delivery.

How the three delivery patterns differ

Pattern Intended recipients How recipients are selected IPv4 and IPv6
Unicast One destination The destination address identifies an individual recipient. Used in both IPv4 and IPv6.
Multicast A selected group A group address represents the recipients; hosts can join or leave the group. IPv4 multicast group addresses span 224.0.0.0–239.255.255.255. IPv6 multicast uses the FF00::/8 prefix. [RFC 1112; RFC 4291]
Broadcast All hosts in the applicable broadcast scope The datagram is addressed so that all hosts that hear it are included. IPv4 supports broadcast. IPv6 has no broadcast addresses. [RFC 919; RFC 4291]

A rough audience analogy is a direct message for unicast, a message to an opted-in group for multicast, and an announcement audible to everyone in a room for broadcast. It describes the audience, not a guarantee about how far traffic travels: actual network scope and forwarding depend on the protocol and network configuration.

What each pattern means in practice

Unicast: one sender to one destination

A unicast packet names an individual destination. It is the familiar pattern behind most ordinary client-to-server exchanges: a client requests data from a server, and the traffic is addressed between individual endpoints. [Cloudflare, “What is IGMP?”]

Multicast: one sender to a group

In IPv4, a multicast datagram is addressed to a host group rather than to each member individually. Hosts may join or leave that group over time. Multicast delivery has best-effort reliability: a sender cannot assume every group member will receive every datagram, or that received datagrams will arrive in order. [RFC 1112]

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

IPv4 uses IGMP for multicast group management. IPv6 uses Multicast Listener Discovery (MLD) for that purpose. These protocols concern group membership; they do not turn multicast into a guarantee of delivery. [Cloudflare, “What is IGMP?”]

Broadcast: one sender to all hosts in scope

An IPv4 broadcast targets all hosts within the relevant network scope, rather than a selected group. That broad audience has a cost: every host that hears the datagram must do at least some processing. Broadcast is useful where a protocol needs to reach hosts without first selecting individual recipients, but it is not an efficient default for every one-to-many task. [RFC 919]

IPv4 and IPv6: why broadcast is different

IPv4 has broadcast addresses as well as multicast addresses. IPv6 does not define broadcast addresses; its address types include unicast, anycast, and multicast. RFC 4291 states, “There are no broadcast addresses in IPv6.” Functions that need to reach multiple IPv6 nodes use multicast addressing and protocols instead. It is therefore more precise to say that IPv6 has no broadcast address type than to say, without qualification, that “broadcast is replaced by multicast.” [RFC 4291]

The multicast ranges are address allocations, not measures of performance: IPv4 multicast group addresses span 224.0.0.0–239.255.255.255, while IPv6 multicast uses FF00::/8. [RFC 1112; RFC 4291]

Which pattern should you use?

  • Use unicast when a packet is intended for one identified endpoint.
  • Use multicast when a defined group should receive traffic and group membership can be managed. Account for best-effort delivery rather than assuming every member receives every datagram.
  • Use broadcast when the intended audience is all hosts in the applicable IPv4 broadcast scope and the broad processing cost is appropriate.

There is no universal “fastest” choice established by these definitions. The relevant distinction is the intended audience and the delivery behavior required; network configuration and the application’s needs matter too.

Does this affect a YouTube live stream?

These terms describe network packet addressing, not three settings that a creator chooses when starting a YouTube broadcast. A live video service can distribute a stream to viewers without the creator selecting IP broadcast. For documentary channels that want uploaded videos to loop as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service: upload a recording or playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. It keeps the loop running in the cloud rather than relying on a home computer; it streams to YouTube only. Start a free first day, with no card required, at StreamNeo.
