That sound-first approach has earned praise for its atmosphere, but it has not persuaded every critic that the film’s horror feels new. The result, judging by the published reviews, is an intriguing experiment whose escalating layers and opaque ending may divide viewers.
What is Undertone about?
Written and directed by Ian Tuason, Undertone stars Nina Kiri as Evy, a paranormal podcast host. A24’s synopsis describes a host haunted by frightening recordings sent to her. The film’s official site adds that Evy is caring for her dying mother when recordings of a pregnant couple’s paranormal experiences arrive—and that the couple’s story begins to parallel her own.

A24 also lists Adam DiMarco, Michèle Duquet, Keana Lyn Bastidas and Jeff Yung among the principal cast. The premise puts the audience in a position familiar to anyone who has listened to a spooky recording: trying to decide what is actually there, and whether the next sound will change the meaning of the last one.
Does Undertone rely on sound design?
Yes. Sound is not just decoration around the scares; it is the film’s central instrument. In his March 11, 2026 review, Associated Press critic Mark Kennedy describes the use of amplified audio and ordinary household noises—including a ticking clock and a tea kettle—to build unease. The tension comes partly from how closely the audience is made to listen and from the possibility that a mundane sound may not be mundane after all.

That approach gives the film a clear identity, but it also raises the stakes for its execution. CinemaBlend’s March 18 coverage recommends a strong speaker system as a way to appreciate the sound work. That is an optional viewing suggestion, not a requirement: the film’s effect depends on attentive listening, not on owning particular equipment.
Is Undertone scary—or does it sound familiar?
The critical response points to both possibilities. Kennedy praises Nina Kiri’s performance and the film’s unsettling effect, but argues that the later additions make it feel overburdened. He sums up that tension this way: “But that a movie so threadbare manages to feel like too much is both the film’s accomplishment and its failure.”

Peter Bradshaw’s review for The Guardian, published January 29, 2026 and updated April 8, likewise acknowledges a “swirl of creepy noises” while finding familiar horror-film echoes beneath them. Bradshaw also finds the ending inscrutable. Those are one critic’s judgments, not a consensus verdict, but they capture the film’s central trade-off: its sound-led method can feel distinctive in the moment while its supernatural framework and payoff may feel less surprising.
Does the one-house setup work?
The contained setting suits a story built around listening. When the action stays close to a home and its rooms, small noises can take on an outsized presence, and the recordings can make an ordinary space feel newly uncertain. The official synopsis’s parallel strands—the couple’s recorded experiences and Evy’s own family situation—also give the film more than one source of tension.

That accumulation is a risk as well as an opportunity. Kennedy’s complaint is that the additional layers become too much; Bradshaw’s response to the ending suggests that the build-up may not resolve into a clear payoff for everyone. Viewers who enjoy ambiguity may find that uncertainty part of the design. Those looking for a neatly explained haunting may be less satisfied.

The official film site lists March 13, 2026 as the release date and gives a runtime of 94 minutes. Rotten Tomatoes lists the same date for a wide theatrical release, but gives a different runtime—1 hour 25 minutes—and lists streaming on April 14, 2026. Because the runtime listings conflict, and streaming rights vary by territory and over time, check a current local listing before planning a viewing rather than relying on one universal runtime or availability date.
