Many film viewers first knew him from two horror films that were directed by Paul Morrissey and produced by Andy Warhol, in which Kier played the title roles. His career went much further than the Factory years, moving through European art-house and genre cinema, the films of Rainer Werner Fassbinder and Lars von Trier, Gus Van Sant’s My Own Private Idaho, and a long run of American studio and genre films.
What is confirmed about his death and life
Reporting from the Associated Press, tagesschau (ARD) and ZDF heute all confirm the core facts: Kier died in Palm Springs on November 23, 2025, aged 81. Filmportal lists his birth as October 14, 1944, in Cologne, and gives his birth name as Udo Kierspe. The reports do not state a cause of death, and nothing in this article should be read as speculation about one.
Early life and first film work
According to Filmportal, Kier trained as a mechanic and worked on the assembly line at Ford before moving to London. There he took language classes and landed his first film role. His screen debut was The Road to St. Tropez. An early genre appearance that later drew attention was Mark of the Devil, which pointed toward the horror and exploitation work that would mark much of his output.
The two Warhol-produced films
Kier’s link to Andy Warhol came through Paul Morrissey, a filmmaker associated with Warhol’s Factory. The two films that defined that association were made under Morrissey’s direction, with Warhol as producer. Warhol did not direct them. Describe them that way in any citation, because the credit lines are often shortened in casual writing.

Flesh for Frankenstein (1973)
In this Morrissey film, produced by Warhol, Kier played the title character. It is the first of the two films that brought him wider notice in underground and art-house circles.
Blood for Dracula (1974)
Kier took the title role again in this follow-up, also directed by Morrissey and produced by Warhol. Together, the two films made him a recognisable face for audiences who knew little else about his early career.

European collaborations
Outside the Warhol films, Kier worked steadily with European directors whose films were built around performance and strong visual style.
Rainer Werner Fassbinder
Kier worked with Fassbinder on The Stationmaster’s Wife and Lili Marleen. These credits place him inside the New German Cinema tradition, not only in the genre films that made him known to American audiences.
Rank #3
Lars von Trier
Kier became a frequent collaborator of the Danish director. Filmportal names Epidemic, Europa, The Kingdom and Dancer in the Dark among his von Trier credits. The Associated Press also highlights Dogville and Melancholia.
American films and the path to Hollywood
Gus Van Sant’s My Own Private Idaho (1991) is generally cited as the film that introduced Kier to many American viewers. Later U.S. credits included Armageddon, Blade, Barb Wire, Johnny Mnemonic and Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. Many of these were supporting or character roles in large productions, which is one reason his name was familiar to audiences who never saw his European work.

How many credits did he have?
The publishers do not agree on a total, and each figure reflects a different counting method. Attribute any number to the outlet that gave it rather than presenting a single tally.

| Associated Press | 2025 | More than 200 credits |
| tagesschau (ARD) | 2025 | More than 220 film and television productions |
| ZDF heute | 2025 | More than 250 film and television productions |
In his own words
In a Variety interview the year before his death, as reported by AP, Kier explained his start in acting: “I liked the attention, so I became an actor.” AP also quotes him on how he chose his work: “I have never asked a director, ‘I would like to work with you,'” he said.

In English, roughly: “I still meet good friends, and I still traditionally go to Cologne Cathedral and light two candles at the Madonna. One for the living friends, one for the dead ones.”
