PETA’s December 10, 2025 post about Umamusume: Pretty Derby used the fictional character Silence Suzuka to criticize the sanitizing of horse racing. Some fans objected to its graphic injury imagery and what they saw as a misreading of the franchise’s relationship with real horses. The available reporting confirms backlash, but does not establish how representative it was.
What PETA posted about Silence Suzuka
Contemporaneous coverage dated the post to December 10, 2025, and quoted PETA: “If Umamusume: Pretty Derby were honest, your favorite horse girl doesn’t get a comeback arc. One failed event, and the race is over forever—just like what happened to the real Silence Suzuka.” The post reportedly paired that message with an image showing the character with a severe leg injury. Gamer Inside’s coverage reproduced the post and described its image.
Why PETA invoked Silence Suzuka
Silence Suzuka is a character in Umamusume: Pretty Derby, as listed on Cygames’ official character page. PETA’s caption explicitly connected the fictional character to the history of the real racehorse. The game’s character and the real horse are distinct: the franchise draws on real horses, but it is fiction, not a documentary account.
Why some fans objected
Coverage reported two overlapping objections: the image was graphic, and using a character associated with a real horse’s history to make an advocacy argument felt misplaced to some fans. Their response included the view that the franchise already engages with real horses and their histories. Reporting on the reactions documents those criticisms, but does not establish what share of the fandom agreed or disagreed.

That distinction matters. The dispute was not simply a clash between people who care about horses and people who do not. It concerned PETA’s message and imagery, and how fans understood the connection between a fictional character, the real horse, and racing.

PETA’s stated advocacy context
PETA’s 2025 annual review describes campaigns to end the use of animals for entertainment. That provides context for the organization’s position; it is not independent proof of every claim in the social post.

Fandom’s real-world responsibilities
Cygames’ official portal provides guidance about visiting stables in Japan. The guidance treats stables as working places where horses live and receive care, and warns that rule-breaking, unexpected visits, and unauthorized photography can disrupt them. It is a practical reminder that interest in a horse or a franchise can affect real animals and staff. It does not show that PETA’s post caused any stable disruption.
