On January 14, 2024, 22-year-old U.S. Air Force 2nd Lt. Madison Marsh of Colorado won Miss America in Orlando, Florida. She became the first active-duty military service member to win the title while studying for a master’s degree at Harvard Kennedy School.
Why Madison Marsh’s win was historic
Marsh’s victory marked the first time an active-duty military service member had been crowned Miss America. She competed as a serving Air Force officer, not as a former service member or veteran. Her win placed military service, aviation and public advocacy at the center of the national pageant.
Marsh said the moment mattered because it could broaden perceptions of women in uniform: “I’m very excited to get to represent women who can break stereotypes.”

Who is Madison Marsh?
Marsh grew up in Arkansas with ambitions of becoming a pilot and astronaut. At 13, she attended NASA Space Camp, and at 17 she earned a civilian pilot’s license. She later attended the U.S. Air Force Academy, where pageant competition became an extracurricular outlet for community service and public speaking.

She was crowned Miss Colorado in 2023 before advancing to the national Miss America competition. At the time of her national win, she was a second lieutenant and a master’s student at Harvard Kennedy School. How an Air Force officer won Miss America
The 2024 competition began with 51 contestants representing all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Eleven semifinalists advanced: 10 chosen by preliminary judges and one selected through a public vote. The semifinalists then competed in four rounds before five finalists were announced.

Marsh’s military background was part of the story she carried into the speaking portions of the event. She later recalled that delivering her speech was especially nerve-racking because she was not trained in theater and felt responsible for presenting an image of military women with strength and precision.

Her pancreatic-cancer advocacy
Marsh’s public platform is closely connected to pancreatic-cancer research and early detection. Her mother, Whitney, died of pancreatic cancer in 2018. In response, the family created the Whitney Marsh Foundation to support research and efforts aimed at finding pancreatic cancer earlier.
That advocacy formed one part of Marsh’s public responsibilities alongside her Air Force career and Miss America duties. The Defense Department described her as learning to manage all three commitments at once.

Marsh has framed the title as a platform for both service and representation. “You can achieve anything … If I can come from a small town, not being a part of the pageant community, step into this role, so can you,” she said in a Miss America Organization account.
