If you are looking for a simple list of anime genres, the most important answer is that anime does not have one universally agreed master list. Anime is a medium, not a genre. A single title can be an action story, a science-fiction story, a psychological thriller, and a shōnen title at the same time.

Some labels describe plot and tone, some identify the intended publication audience, some describe a setting or theme, and others identify a format such as a television series or film. This guide separates those categories and explains how they overlap.

If you are looking for a simple list of anime genres, the most important answer is that anime does not have one universally agreed master list. Anime is a medium, not a genre. A single title can be an action story, a science-fiction story, a psychological thriller, and a shōnen title at the same time.

That distinction explains much of the confusion around labels such as shōnen, seinen, isekai, and slice of life. Some labels describe plot and tone, some identify the intended publication audience, some describe a setting or theme, and others identify a format such as a television series or film. The guide below separates those categories and explains how they overlap.

Anime genres at a glance

Category What it describes Examples
Action, romance, horror, comedy Plot emphasis or tone Jujutsu Kaisen, Toradora!, Another
Shōnen, shōjo, seinen, josei Demographic or publication audience Naruto, Fruits Basket, Monster, Nana
Isekai, mecha, magical girl Story premise or anime-specific subject Re:ZERO, Mobile Suit Gundam, Madoka Magica
Cyberpunk, historical, school, space opera Setting or worldbuilding These can appear alongside action, drama, comedy, or romance
TV series, movie, OVA, ONA, special Format or distribution method Not genres

This multi-label approach is not just a matter of semantics. Anime databases and streaming services often combine audience, subject, setting, mood, and plot labels in their own proprietary taxonomies. As a result, two services may classify the same title differently. Academic research on anime classification describes the problem as facet analysis: a work can be described through several independent facets rather than one definitive genre box.

The demographic categories: shōnen, shōjo, seinen, josei, and kodomomuke

These labels are often called genres, but they are more accurately understood as demographic or publication-audience categories. In Japan, they have traditionally been associated with the readership of the manga magazine or publication in which a work appeared. They are not legally fixed age ratings, and they do not dictate who is allowed to enjoy a title.

Kodomomuke: anime for children

Kodomomuke means works intended for children. Stories in this category often use accessible plots, clear conflicts, memorable characters, humor, adventure, fantasy, or collectible-competition structures, although individual titles vary considerably.

Common examples include Pokémon, Doraemon, Digimon Adventure, Beyblade, and Yo-kai Watch. A kodomomuke series can still contain action, comedy, science fiction, or supernatural elements; the demographic label does not replace those story categories.

Shōnen: a demographic, not a synonym for battle anime

Shōnen means “boy” or “youth” and is generally associated with boys and younger male teenagers. The category is famous internationally because many highly visible action series originated in shōnen manga magazines.

Naruto, One Piece, Bleach, Dragon Ball, and Hunter × Hunter are familiar examples. They commonly combine action, adventure, fantasy, comedy, rivalry, and coming-of-age themes.

However, shōnen does not mean “fighting anime.” Action and tournament structures are common patterns, not requirements. The label identifies an intended readership or publication context, while the actual story may be romantic, comedic, dramatic, supernatural, or science fictional.

Shōjo: broader than romance

Shōjo means “girl” or “young woman” and is generally associated with girls and younger female teenagers. Romance is common in shōjo, but it is not mandatory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sailor Moon, Cardcaptor Sakura, Fruits Basket, and Ouran High School Host Club demonstrate the variety within the category. Shōjo works may be romantic, fantastical, mysterious, comedic, supernatural, adventurous, or dramatic. A story can be shōjo because of its publication audience even when romance is not its central plot.

Seinen: adult-male demographic fiction in many forms

Seinen is associated with adult men or older male readers. It is sometimes incorrectly used as a warning that a series must be violent, explicit, or relentlessly dark.

In reality, seinen can include action, horror, science fiction, comedy, romance, philosophical drama, or quiet slice-of-life storytelling. Berserk, Monster, and Vinland Saga represent serious and often intense examples, while Kaguya-sama: Love Is War shows that a seinen publication category can also contain romantic comedy.

The category may correlate with more mature subject matter in some works, but seinen is not the same thing as an age rating. Always check the actual content of a title rather than inferring it from the demographic label alone.

Josei: adult-women’s demographic fiction

Josei is associated with adult women or older female readers. Josei stories often examine relationships, employment, responsibility, family, ambition, and difficult life transitions with a grounded perspective, but they are not limited to romance.

Examples include Nana, Paradise Kiss, Honey and Clover, Princess Jellyfish, and Chihayafuru. Like seinen, josei is a broad demographic category that can contain comedy, drama, romance, sports, music, and slice-of-life stories.

Why exact age ranges can be misleading

Online explainers sometimes assign precise ranges—such as 12–18 for shōnen and shōjo or 18 and older for seinen and josei. Those figures are useful as rough orientation, but they are not universal rules. The categories arise from publication and marketing conventions rather than a single international rating system. The intended audience also does not exclude other viewers.

In practical terms, think of the demographic label as one piece of metadata. Pair it with the title’s actual genre, themes, tone, content warnings, and format.

Core narrative genres

These labels describe what a story emphasizes. Unlike demographic categories, they are usually closer to what viewers mean when they ask what kind of story an anime is.

Action

Action anime emphasize physical conflict, fights, chases, dangerous missions, escalating threats, or large-scale set pieces. Many also focus on training, rivalries, teamwork, and the development of special abilities.

Examples include Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Jujutsu Kaisen, and Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. Action is often combined with fantasy, science fiction, supernatural horror, comedy, or adventure.

Adventure

Adventure anime are built around travel, exploration, discovery, changing locations, and the gradual unveiling of a larger world. The characters may be seeking treasure, crossing dangerous territories, investigating unknown cultures, or pursuing a long-term goal.

One Piece, Hunter × Hunter, and Made in Abyss are examples. Adventure frequently overlaps with action and fantasy, but it can also be historical, comedic, science fictional, or character-driven.

Fantasy

Fantasy anime use magic, mythology, invented worlds, supernatural rules, legendary creatures, or other departures from ordinary reality as central story elements.

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, Re:ZERO −Starting Life in Another World−, and The Ancient Magus’ Bride illustrate different approaches to fantasy. One may focus on epic quests, another on psychological survival, and another on folklore and relationships.

Science fiction

Science-fiction anime build their conflicts around technology and its consequences. Common subjects include artificial intelligence, space travel, cybernetics, genetic engineering, surveillance, dystopian governments, and future societies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Examples include Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Steins;Gate, and Psycho-Pass. Science fiction can be an action thriller, a philosophical drama, a mystery, or a character-focused story about identity and technological change.

Romance

Romance anime place attraction, emotional development, commitment, misunderstandings, or relationship decisions at the center of the narrative. The romance may unfold through comedy, school life, fantasy, drama, or supernatural conflict.

Kaguya-sama: Love Is War, Toradora!, and the 2019 adaptation of Fruits Basket are examples. Romance is also a frequent secondary genre, so a title may be primarily an action or fantasy series with a substantial romantic storyline.

Slice of life

Slice-of-life anime focus on ordinary routines, school or workplace experiences, hobbies, friendships, family relationships, and gradual personal change. The central conflicts are usually smaller in scale than those in an action epic, but “small-scale” does not mean unimportant.

Barakamon, March Comes in Like a Lion, and Laid-Back Camp show how varied the category can be. Slice of life may be relaxing, funny, melancholy, psychologically intense, romantic, or emotionally heavy. The claim that “nothing happens” in slice-of-life anime confuses the absence of world-ending stakes with the absence of character development.

Horror

Horror anime aim to create fear, dread, tension, psychological unease, or disgust. They may use ghosts, curses, body horror, paranoia, isolation, disturbing transformations, or threats that cannot be easily understood or defeated.

Another, Shiki, and Higurashi: When They Cry are examples. Horror can overlap with mystery, supernatural fiction, psychological drama, thriller, or even comedy.

Comedy

Comedy anime make humor their primary purpose or dominant tone. Styles include slapstick, parody, absurdism, satire, deadpan delivery, awkward social situations, and genre spoofing.

Gintama, KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on This Wonderful World!, and The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. demonstrate how comedy can coexist with action, fantasy, school stories, and adventure. A comedy may still contain serious arcs, just as a drama may use frequent humor.

Drama

Drama emphasizes serious emotional, interpersonal, ethical, or social conflict. Its subject may be grief, family, ambition, illness, inequality, responsibility, identity, or the consequences of difficult choices.

Drama is rarely an isolated box. It commonly combines with romance, slice of life, sports, action, historical fiction, or fantasy. In classification terms, it is often a tone or narrative emphasis rather than a specific setting.

Mystery

Mystery anime organize the story around an unexplained event, hidden information, investigation, or gradual revelation. The viewer may follow detectives, victims, witnesses, or characters trying to understand a secret that affects their lives.

Mystery frequently overlaps with crime, thriller, horror, psychological fiction, and supernatural stories. A mystery label tells you that discovering the truth is a major engine of the plot; it does not necessarily tell you whether the tone will be frightening, humorous, or dramatic.

Thriller and suspense

Thrillers and suspense stories prioritize danger, uncertainty, pursuit, escalating pressure, and delayed information. They are defined more by the experience they create than by a particular setting.

A thriller may be an action series about an assassination attempt, a mystery about a hidden crime, a psychological story about manipulation, or a science-fiction narrative about a dangerous technology. Suspense can therefore function as a plot and mood label alongside several other genres.

Psychological

Psychological anime focus on perception, manipulation, identity, moral pressure, mental conflict, or unreliable viewpoints. Rather than relying primarily on physical battles, they often make the characters’ decisions, beliefs, and changing understanding the main source of tension.

Death Note, Perfect Blue, and Monster are prominent examples. Psychological elements can appear in horror, mystery, thriller, science fiction, or drama.

Supernatural

Supernatural anime use spirits, curses, ghosts, yokai, divine beings, or unexplained phenomena as central elements. Supernatural does not automatically mean horror: the same premise can support comedy, romance, adventure, drama, or quiet reflection.

Natsume’s Book of Friends, Noragami, and Jujutsu Kaisen demonstrate that range. A supernatural action series and a supernatural slice-of-life series may share a label while offering entirely different viewing experiences.

Sports

Sports anime center on athletic competition, practice, teamwork, rivalry, discipline, and self-improvement. Matches are often used to explore friendship, confidence, failure, leadership, and personal limits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Haikyu!!, Kuroko’s Basketball, and Yuri!!! on Ice are examples. Sports anime can be realistic or highly stylized, comedic or dramatic, and sometimes include romance or documentary-like attention to training and performance.

Anime-specific subgenres, premises, and themes

Several familiar anime labels do not fit neatly into the conventional narrative-genre list. They identify a recurring premise, relationship structure, character format, mood, or subject.

Isekai: stories set in another world

Isekai literally means “another world.” An isekai story involves a character entering or being transported to a different world, often through reincarnation, summoning, transfer, portal travel, or another extraordinary mechanism.

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation, and Re:ZERO are examples. The claim that every isekai protagonist dies and is reincarnated is incorrect. Death and reincarnation are common devices, but summoning, accidental transfer, and other forms of travel also qualify.

Isekai is not a complete tone label. It can be an adventure, comedy, power fantasy, romance, political drama, psychological thriller, or dark tragedy.

Mecha

Mecha anime center on mechanical machines, especially giant robots, piloted weapons, powered suits, or other advanced machinery. Battles are common, but mecha is not limited to robot combat.

Mobile Suit Gundam, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Code Geass use machines to explore war, politics, identity, technology, authority, and power. A mecha title may therefore also be science fiction, military drama, political fiction, action, or psychological horror.

Mahō shōjo, or magical girl

Mahō shōjo (“magical girl”) generally features female protagonists who gain magical abilities, transform, or use supernatural powers to confront threats. Transformation sequences, secret identities, friendship, and responsibility are recurring features, but individual works can subvert the familiar formula.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica is a notable example of how the magical-girl framework can support a much darker psychological and dramatic story than the label alone might suggest.

Harem and reverse harem

Harem describes a relationship configuration in which one central character is surrounded by multiple potential romantic partners. It is not a single tone: a harem anime may be a comedy, fantasy adventure, drama, or action series.

Reverse harem generally reverses the usual gender arrangement, placing one central female character among multiple potential male partners. These labels describe the relationship structure rather than the complete genre or demographic.

BL and GL

Boys’ love (BL) describes romance or relationships between male characters, while girls’ love (GL), also associated with the term yuri, describes romance or relationships between female characters. Catalogs and audiences do not always use these labels in exactly the same way, so it is useful to check how a particular service defines them.

BL and GL can overlap with romance, comedy, drama, school stories, fantasy, science fiction, or slice of life. Like other labels in this guide, they identify one important aspect of a title rather than every aspect of it.

Iyashikei: healing and soothing fiction

Iyashikei means a “healing” or soothing type of work. These anime generally emphasize calm atmosphere, gentle pacing, everyday experiences, natural scenery, and emotional comfort.

Iyashikei is best understood as a mood or affective classification rather than a mandatory plot structure. It often overlaps with slice of life, but not every slice-of-life anime is soothing, and an iyashikei title may still contain melancholy or serious reflection.

Settings and themes that are often mistaken for genres

Labels such as cyberpunk, steampunk, dystopia, space opera, school, afterlife, and historical primarily describe setting or worldbuilding. They can be paired with almost any narrative emphasis.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A cyberpunk anime may be a crime mystery, action thriller, or philosophical drama.
  • A historical anime may be romantic, comedic, political, or war-focused.
  • A school anime may be a comedy, horror story, sports series, or supernatural adventure.
  • A space opera may emphasize military action, family drama, political intrigue, or exploration.
  • A dystopian story may be science fiction, psychological thriller, romance, or horror.

Other common labels identify subjects or themes: idol, cooking, workplace, crime, politics, time travel, virtual reality, vehicles, and natural disasters. These classifications answer “what is this story about?” or “where does it take place?” rather than necessarily answering “what kind of narrative is it?”

Formats are not genres

TV series, films, OVAs, specials, and ONAs are formats or distribution categories. They describe how a work is produced or released, not whether it is an action, romance, horror, or comedy title.

  • TV series: episodic anime produced for television or television-style distribution.
  • Film: a feature-length or shorter theatrical, festival, broadcast, or streaming movie.
  • OVA: an original video animation released directly for home video or another nontraditional initial distribution route.
  • ONA: an original net animation released through the internet or an online platform.
  • Special: an additional episode or standalone work made for a particular broadcast, release, or event.

The same franchise can contain a TV series, a film, an OVA, and specials while retaining the same broad story genres. Format can affect episode length, pacing, and release order, but it is not a substitute for genre information.

Original anime versus adapted anime

Anime can be original or adapted. An original anime is created without adapting an existing manga, novel, or game as its primary source. An adapted anime may come from manga, light novels, novels, games, or other source material.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Therefore, “anime” does not automatically mean “cartoon based on manga.” Source material is another classification facet, separate from genre and format. An adapted fantasy film and an original science-fiction television series are both anime, but their production origins tell you nothing by themselves about their narrative genres.

How to classify an anime accurately

  1. Identify the main narrative engine. Is the story driven mainly by investigation, romance, competition, exploration, fear, physical conflict, or everyday character development?
  2. Add the tone. Is it comedic, dramatic, suspenseful, comforting, disturbing, tragic, or a mixture?
  3. Record the setting. Note whether it takes place at school, in space, in a historical period, in a dystopia, in a fantasy world, or in another distinctive environment.
  4. Record the premise or structure. Isekai, mecha, magical girl, harem, BL, GL, and time travel may be important descriptors even when they are not the main genre.
  5. Add the demographic only when it is known. Shōnen, shōjo, seinen, josei, and kodomomuke describe audience or publication context, not the entire story.
  6. Separate format from content. State whether it is a TV series, film, OVA, ONA, or special as a separate fact.

Using that method, a title might be described as: shōnen demographic; action-adventure fantasy; supernatural elements; TV series. Another might be: seinen demographic; psychological mystery thriller; dystopian science-fiction setting; TV series. Neither description claims that the title belongs to only one category.

Common misconceptions about anime genres

“Shōnen, shōjo, seinen, and josei are genres.”

They are demographic or publication-audience categories. Each can contain many conventional genres, from comedy and romance to action and horror.

“Shōnen means battle anime.”

Battle-focused shōnen is highly visible, but shōnen identifies intended readership and publication context. It does not require fighting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Shōjo means romance anime.”

Romance is common, but shōjo also includes fantasy, mystery, comedy, supernatural stories, adventure, and drama.

“Seinen automatically means violent or explicit.”

Seinen titles may be dark and mature, but they may also be funny, romantic, philosophical, domestic, or mundane. The demographic is not an automatic content rating.

“Slice of life means nothing happens.”

The category emphasizes ordinary life and incremental change. Its conflicts can still be emotionally substantial, psychologically complex, or dramatically serious.

“Mecha only means giant robots fighting.”

Mecha may use machines to examine war, politics, identity, technology, or power. Combat is common but not compulsory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Every anime has one genre.”

Multiple labels are normal. Combinations such as action-supernatural-horror, romance-comedy-slice of life, or science-fiction-psychological-thriller are more informative than forcing a title into one category.

Bottom line

The best way to understand anime genres is to treat them as a layered classification system. Action, romance, horror, comedy, mystery, and drama describe narrative emphasis or tone. Shōnen, shōjo, seinen, josei, and kodomomuke describe demographic or publication audiences. Isekai, mecha, magical girl, harem, BL, GL, and iyashikei describe recurring premises, structures, relationships, or moods. Cyberpunk, historical, school, dystopian, and space opera describe settings or themes, while TV, film, OVA, ONA, and special describe format.

Because these layers can coexist, there is no single official list of “all anime genres.” A useful description does not ask which one label a title belongs to; it explains which combination of genre, demographic, premise, setting, tone, and format best describes the work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is anime a genre?

No. Anime is an animation medium, while genres describe story content, tone, or structure. A single anime can combine action, fantasy, romance, comedy, and other genres.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does shōnen mean battle anime?

No. Shōnen is generally a demographic or publication-audience category associated with boys and younger male teens. Shōnen anime can be action, comedy, romance, fantasy, or another type of story.

Does every isekai protagonist die and reincarnate?

No. Isekai means “another world.” A character may reach that world through reincarnation, summoning, transfer, portal travel, or another mechanism. Death and reincarnation are common but not required.

Are TV anime and movies genres?

No. TV series, movies, OVAs, ONAs, and specials are formats or distribution categories. They describe how an anime is released, not its plot genre.

Does seinen automatically mean mature or violent?

Not necessarily. Seinen identifies a demographic associated with adult men or older male readers. A seinen anime may be violent, but it may also be comedic, romantic, philosophical, or slice of life.

The Bottom Line

Anime is a medium, not a genre. Classify a title by combining its narrative genre, tone, demographic, premise, setting, and format instead of treating labels such as shōnen, isekai, or TV series as interchangeable.
