The Twitch mobile app’s major redesign launched on July 29, 2024—not in 2026. It replaced the old directory-like experience with a discovery-first Home feed built around live-stream previews, Clips, followed channels and Stories. Twitch’s mobile strategy has continued evolving: its June 2026 Dual Format update added vertical viewing for streams that creators produce in both horizontal and vertical formats.
Here’s what changed, where to find the main features, and what the redesign means if you prefer a predictable list of followed channels over an algorithmic feed.
Is the Twitch mobile app actually new?
Not in the breaking-news sense. Twitch began testing its redesigned mobile experience in early 2024 and announced the rollout on July 29, 2024. Twitch said the redesigned app would roll out to users over the course of that week.

The change was more than a visual refresh. Twitch reorganized the app’s information architecture so that personalized discovery became the first thing many viewers encounter. The current mobile story is therefore two related developments:

- The 2024 redesign: a new navigation structure centered on live discovery, Clips, Stories and recommendations.
- The 2026 Dual Format update: a viewing-format change that can provide a vertical presentation on phones when creators support both horizontal and vertical streams.
The second update builds on Twitch’s mobile focus, but it is not evidence of a second complete app redesign.
Why did Twitch redesign the app?
Twitch said it wanted to make content easier to discover, particularly for new viewers using phones. In its July 2024 announcement, Twitch reported that more than half of its users primarily used Twitch on a phone in a given month, 40% used their phone exclusively, and almost three quarters of new viewers started on mobile.
Those figures are Twitch’s own reported figures, not an independent audit. They nevertheless explain the strategic direction: Twitch was trying to make its mobile app less like a list of channels and more like a discovery-first video service.

What changed in the redesign?
A personalized Home discovery feed
The Home experience puts recommended live content front and center. You can swipe through previews, then tap a preview to enter the stream and chat. This reduces the commitment required to sample an unfamiliar channel, but it also means the first screen may feel less predictable than the old layout.
A followed-channel drawer
Channels you follow that are live are available through a drawer in the upper-left area of the Home experience. If you mainly watch established favorites, this is the route to check instead of relying on recommendations.

A separate Clips feed
Clips have their own discovery surface, making it easier to browse short moments rather than enter a full live broadcast. This is useful when you have only a few minutes, although it gives Twitch a more short-form-video feel than its traditional live-stream directory.
Stories from followed streamers
Stories let followed creators share updates when they are not live. They give viewers another way to keep up between broadcasts and make creator activity more continuous than a live-only schedule.

Twitch also reworked the main destinations and creator controls:

Labels and placement can vary by iPhone, Android phone, tablet, account, localization, app version and Twitch experiment. Treat the table as a functional map rather than a guarantee that every device displays identical controls.
How to control autoplay and sound
Early feedback led Twitch to add controls for whether the feed autoplays. Twitch also said it made the feed muted by default, added a mute button directly in the feed and enabled picture-in-picture over the feed.

If you want to reduce interruptions, the practical approach is to disable or limit autoplay where your version exposes that option, keep the feed muted when previewing, and use Browse or the follow drawer when you already know what you want to watch.
What is different about Twitch mobile viewing in 2026?
On June 17, 2026, Twitch announced Dual Format streaming. Twitch said the feature was rolling out to all streamers. It allows a creator to produce horizontal and vertical versions of a stream at the same time.
For a viewer holding a phone vertically, a supported stream can show a full-screen vertical presentation. Viewers can switch back to a classic split view, while turning the phone sideways returns the experience to full-screen horizontal viewing. Twitch also said Dual Format can produce both horizontal and vertical versions of Clips and VODs.

The creator must support Dual Format, and the quality of the vertical presentation depends on how the stream is configured. A conventional horizontal stream may still appear in a conventional layout.
Availability can also differ by account, region, app version and rollout status. If a stream does not appear vertically, that is not necessarily an app malfunction: the channel may simply not support Dual Format.
Where does 2K streaming fit?
2K streaming is related to Twitch’s mobile and video-quality strategy, but it is not an interface redesign. Twitch defines 2K here as 1440p and announced availability for Partners and Affiliates. Twitch cited up to 9 Mbps for 1440p and 7.5 Mbps for 1080p, with 2K using HEVC rather than AVC.

Twitch also said higher-quality streams can produce 2K Clips and VODs and that server-side transcoding was added for Partners and many Affiliates to reduce the performance burden on creators.
For viewers, the trade-off is straightforward: higher resolution can look better but may consume more data and perform worse on a weak connection. Twitch’s automatic adjustment and transcoding are intended to reduce buffering, but they cannot guarantee smooth playback on every phone or network.
Is the redesign better than the old layout?
There is no single answer because the redesign optimizes for discovery rather than every viewing habit.
It is probably better if you:
- Want to find unfamiliar streamers quickly.
- Prefer previews or Clips before committing to a long broadcast.
- Follow many channels and need a faster way to see who is live.
- Watch mainly on a phone.
- Want vertical viewing when a creator supports Dual Format.
- Use Stories to follow creators between broadcasts.
The old model may have suited you better if you:
- Open Twitch for one specific streamer.
- Prefer a stable list to personalized recommendations.
- Want categories immediately.
- Usually resume VODs or previously watched streams.
- Dislike autoplay and swipe-based interfaces.
- Need to conserve mobile data or battery.
The central trade-off is discovery versus control. A personalized feed can surface something relevant, but it can also add friction for a viewer who already knows the destination. App Store reviews include complaints about the feed-first Home experience and navigation, along with reports involving player controls, chat refreshes, watch streaks and menus. These are individual, self-selected reports—not evidence that most users dislike the redesign or proof of platform-wide defects.

“I can’t find my followed channels.”
- Check the upper-left area of the Home experience for the follow drawer.
- Confirm that you are signed in.
- Check that the account actually follows the channel.
- Open Browse or Profile, then return to Home.
- Update Twitch and use search as a fallback.
The exact placement can change, so verify the control on the device in use.
“The feed keeps playing automatically.”
Open the current feed or playback settings and look for autoplay controls. Twitch has documented that it added the ability to control feed autoplay, but the precise menu name and location should not be assumed to be identical on iOS and Android.

“I want the old Home screen back.”
Twitch’s redesign announcement does not document a switch that restores the previous Home layout. Do not assume there is an official rollback. Instead, use Browse for categories, the follow drawer for followed live channels, Activity for notifications and Whispers, and search for a known streamer. Limiting autoplay may also make the discovery-first design less intrusive.
“Why doesn’t this stream have a vertical view?”
Dual Format depends on creator support. You cannot force every horizontal broadcast into a good vertical composition. Try rotating the phone or using the available view toggle, but understand that a standard horizontal stream may not have a separate vertical version.
“Playback, chat or notifications are broken.”
Try this order:
- Update Twitch.
- Force-close and reopen the app.
- Check Wi-Fi or cellular connectivity.
- Sign out and back in.
- Restart the device.
- Reinstall Twitch if the problem persists.
- Contact Twitch Support with the device model, operating-system version, app version and exact reproduction steps.
Apple’s U.S. App Store listing showed Twitch version 30.8 on August 18, 2026, with recent notes focused on bug fixes, stability fixes and optimizations. That version number applies to the observed iOS listing only; Android may use a different release number. Check your own app store before troubleshooting an issue that may already be fixed.

What the redesign means for creators
The mobile-first layout makes presentation in previews, Clips and vertical viewing more important. Creators using Dual Format need to consider whether overlays, alerts, captions and gameplay remain legible in a tall frame. A layout that works on a desktop monitor can become crowded or unreadable on a phone.
There is also a technical trade-off. Supporting multiple formats can increase production complexity, while Twitch’s Enhanced Broadcasting and server-side transcoding are intended to reduce the strain for eligible creators. 2K streaming remains a separate eligibility and encoding question, with Twitch announcing it for Partners and Affiliates rather than all creators.
Bottom line
Twitch’s “fresh new design” is best understood as the July 2024 mobile redesign: a lasting shift toward personalized live discovery, swipeable previews, Clips, Stories and reorganized navigation. It is no longer a new launch in 2026, but it remains the foundation of Twitch’s mobile experience.
The newer development is Dual Format, which can give mobile viewers a dedicated vertical presentation when a creator supports it. Whether the overall experience feels better depends on your priority: the redesign is more useful for discovering content, while viewers who want direct, predictable access to a specific streamer, category or VOD may need to rely on Browse, search and the follow drawer.
