Yes, you can create a ringtone from audio associated with a YouTube video—but only when you are allowed to copy and use that audio. The dependable process is to obtain a legitimate standalone file, trim it to a short clip, then install it through Android’s ringtone settings or GarageBand on iPhone. A YouTube or YouTube Music offline download is not normally an editable ringtone file.
Before you start: check permission
A video being publicly viewable does not make its audio free to download, edit, or reuse. YouTube’s Terms of Service restrict downloading, reproducing, altering, and other uses unless YouTube permits them, the rights holder authorizes them, or applicable law allows them.
The safest sources are:
- Your own original recording or upload.
- A file supplied by the creator or copyright holder.
- Public-domain audio.
- Music with a license that permits downloading, editing, and ringtone use.
- Material from a first-party library whose individual terms cover your intended use.
Do not treat personal use or “fair use” as a blanket permission to extract a commercial song. The U.S. Copyright Office recommends obtaining permission or following the applicable license. Business or promotional use generally requires especially careful clearance.

- A legally obtained local audio file, such as MP3, M4A/AAC, or WAV.
- An editor: Audacity for desktop editing or GarageBand for iPhone.
- A phone with enough storage for the finished clip.
- A target clip of roughly 10–30 seconds.
MP3 is the simplest cross-platform choice. WAV can be useful while editing, but export a smaller phone-friendly file afterward. There is no single bitrate or codec that works identically on every Android manufacturer, so prioritize clear audio, sensible volume, and local storage.

Prepare the ringtone clip
- Import the authorized audio into Audacity, GarageBand, or another reputable editor.
- Choose the most recognizable section. Remove silence at the beginning.
- Trim the clip to about 10–30 seconds.
- Add a short fade-in if it starts harshly and a fade-out to avoid an abrupt ending.
- Raise or normalize volume conservatively. Avoid clipping and distortion.
- Listen through a phone speaker, not only headphones.
- Export a new copy and use a simple filename containing ordinary letters and numbers.
Renaming a file extension does not convert the audio. For example, changing .mp3 to .m4r alone does not create a valid iPhone ringtone.
Android: set the file as a ringtone
Method 1: Files by Google
If the edited file is already on the phone:
- Open Files by Google.
- Tap Audio under Categories.
- Find and play the file.
- Tap More, then Set as ringtone.
- Allow permission to modify system settings if Android asks.

Method 2: copy an MP3 to the Ringtones folder
- Connect the phone to a computer using USB.
- Open the phone’s internal storage and find or create a folder named
Ringtones. - Copy the MP3 into that folder, then disconnect the phone.
- Open Settings → Sound & vibration → Phone ringtone.
- Select the new file and save it if your phone displays a Save command.
Google documents this path for Android, but Samsung, Motorola, OnePlus, and other manufacturers may use different labels or menus. See Google’s Android ringtone guide.

Assign a ringtone to one contact
On supported Android phones, open Contacts, select the person, tap More → Set ringtone, choose the sound, and tap Save.
iPhone: create a ringtone with GarageBand
Apple’s current first-party workflow uses GarageBand and limits exported ringtones to 30 seconds.
- Install GarageBand if necessary. Touch and hold its icon, then tap Create New Audio Recording.
- Tap the Tracks button, then the instrument icon.
- Tap the Loops Browser, choose Files → Browse items from the Files app, and locate your local audio file.
- Touch and hold the file and drag it into the Tracks view.
- Trim it to no more than 30 seconds. Move the audio region fully to the left so silence is not added before the ringtone.
- Tap the navigation button, choose My Songs, and touch and hold the project.
- Tap Share → Ringtone, rename it if desired, and tap Export.
- Choose Use sound as, then select Standard Ringtone, Standard Text Tone, Assign to contact, or Done.
Apple’s detailed instructions are available in its custom-ringtone guide and GarageBand export documentation. GarageBand can import an ordinary local file, but protected or undownloaded streaming tracks cannot be used.

Why YouTube Premium downloads usually do not work
YouTube Premium and YouTube Music downloads are controlled by the service for offline playback. They are not generally exposed as ordinary MP3 or M4A files that you can open in GarageBand or another editor. YouTube’s paid-service restrictions also govern how downloaded content may be used.

Safer places to find ringtone material
YouTube Audio Library offers downloadable music and sound effects, including MP3 downloads. YouTube describes the library as copyright-safe for YouTube use, but each track can have its own license and attribution requirements. Check those terms before using or redistributing a sound as a ringtone.
YouTube also warns that music described as “free” elsewhere may still trigger copyright claims. A creator’s description alone is not proof that you have permission.
Other lower-risk options include original recordings, creator-provided downloads, public-domain recordings, properly licensed libraries, and official ringtone stores such as Apple’s Tone Store. Availability and terms may vary by country.
Troubleshooting
Android does not show the file
- Move the file into the
Ringtonesfolder. - Confirm it is a local audio file rather than a streaming download.
- Use a simple filename and restart the phone.
- Try Files by Google → Audio → More → Set as ringtone.
- Check the manufacturer’s sound manager, work profile, or alternate ringtone settings.
The iPhone file cannot be imported
The file may still be protected, stored only inside a streaming app, or unavailable locally. Obtain an ordinary audio file that you are authorized to use. Apple specifically excludes protected or undownloaded Apple Music tracks from its ringtone workflow.

The ringtone is too long or starts with silence
iPhone GarageBand exports are limited to 30 seconds. Trim manually for control, and move the audio region completely to the beginning of the GarageBand timeline.
The ringtone is too quiet
Increase gain or normalize modestly without pushing peaks into clipping. Test on the phone speaker. Ringtone volume is separate from media volume on many phones, and silent mode, Focus, Do Not Disturb, or vibration-only settings can suppress calls.

Not necessarily. Files by Google can set an existing local file on Android, and GarageBand can create a ringtone directly on iPhone. A computer is useful for Audacity or transferring files.

Can I use a popular song as a personal ringtone?
Technical ability does not establish permission. Check the copyright owner’s terms or use licensed, public-domain, or original audio instead.
