Turn a selected Instagram DM thread into a song by cleaning the conversation, asking the sender for consent, shaping the messages into a lyric brief, and pasting that brief into an AI music generator. Keep the original messages in a private working file, remove names and identifying details, and save the generated audio with a record of the human edits.
Prepare The Instagram DMs
- Ask every identifiable participant for permission to adapt the messages into lyrics, including permission for any recognizable voice or quoted wording.
- Copy only the messages needed for the story into a separate document. Remove handles, phone numbers, locations, links, and private details.
- Label each line by speaker, such as A and B. Keep timestamps only when they help the song’s story.
- Mark the emotional turns: the first message, a misunderstanding, a reveal, a joke, and the final answer. These turns become sections of the song.
- Rewrite identifying phrases into fresh wording unless the participants explicitly approve the exact quotation.
Shape A DM Thread Into A Song Brief
Instagram DMs are short, conversational, and often fragmented. A useful brief preserves that rhythm while giving the generator a clear structure.
- Subject: what the exchange is about.
- Point of view: first person, two alternating speakers, or a narrator.
- Sections: verse for setup, pre-chorus for tension, chorus for the central message, and bridge for the turning point.
- Texture: specify whether the lines should feel like spoken messages, a call-and-response, or a polished pop lyric.
- Boundaries: state what must stay anonymous and whether the result should use fictionalized wording.
Example brief:
“Create a two-voice indie-pop song from an anonymous late-night DM exchange. Verse 1 uses short message-like lines about missing the last train. Verse 2 reveals that both people were waiting at different stations. The chorus turns ‘Are you still awake?’ into the hook. Keep the wording original, conversational, and easy to sing. Do not include usernames, places, or real names.”

Step 1: Draft The Lyric From The Conversation

Step 2: Generate Several Arrangements
Make separate generations with one variable changed at a time: tempo feel, vocal arrangement, or instrumentation. For a message thread, compare a solo vocal version with a call-and-response version. Keep a simple log containing the prompt, date, tool, plan, and output filename so you can trace which version contains the approved wording.

Step 3: Edit The Parts That Sound Like Messages
Short DMs can produce awkward repeated phrases or unclear speaker changes. Replace lines that reveal identity, split an overlong message into two lines, and make the chorus repeat one approved idea. For a documentary sequence, keep the original DM transcript, the anonymized lyric, the prompt log, and the final audio together. Add captions or on-screen message cards only after checking that every visible line has the participant’s approval.
Consent, Copyright, And Platform Terms
Get consent before adapting private DMs, quoting a person’s words, imitating a recognizable voice, or publishing the result. Check Instagram’s terms and the selected music platform’s terms before release, especially for commercial use, voice likeness, uploads, and public sharing.
