Samuel L. Jackson makes a compelling addition to Tulsa King as Russell Lee Washington Jr., a seasoned operator whose choices quickly complicate his assignment to kill Dwight Manfredi. Quiet Ray sends Russell after Dwight, but Russell warns him instead—and ultimately joins him against Ray’s associates. Meanwhile, Dunmire’s threat reaches Joanne, and Tyson and Spencer’s side hustle keeps drawing trouble.
What happens in “Dead Weight”?
“Dead Weight” is the ninth episode of Tulsa King Season 3. Paramount+’s official synopsis puts two storylines in focus: “As Dwight expands his liquor empire, Tyson’s side hustle draws heat.” The episode also brings a threat against Joanne to the foreground and shifts the balance between Dwight and Russell, the new player Quiet Ray hires to kill him.
The hour opens with Russell Lee Washington Jr. carrying out a hit in Newark. Quiet Ray Renzatti then sends him to Tulsa to take out Dwight. Russell does not follow through: he warns Dwight, explaining that Dwight saved his life 20 years earlier. Russell says he wants to start over in New Orleans, but the old debt—and Ray’s orders—pull him back into Dwight’s orbit.
Why does Russell spare Dwight?
Russell is introduced as a capable professional, not simply another gunman arriving to threaten Dwight. His history with Dwight gives him a reason to act on his own judgment, and his stated plan for a fresh start makes clear that he has interests beyond Ray’s command. That agency is what makes Jackson’s character an engaging addition: the tension comes not just from whether Russell can reach Dwight, but from what Russell will choose to do.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Russell’s warning is not a one-time gesture. When he appears to be carrying out Ray’s orders again, he spares Dwight once more and goes with him to confront Ray’s associates. Ray has also been making threats against Russell, so the shift is not a clean, consequence-free alliance. Russell may be helping Dwight, but his history with Ray and his own plans leave room for conflict.
Jackson and Sylvester Stallone make a strong pairing because Russell changes the terms of Dwight’s usual power play. Dwight has built his authority in Tulsa; Russell arrives with a separate history, professional skill and leverage of his own. Calling Jackson a “great addition” is an assessment of how the character enlivens this episode, not a measurable verdict shared by every viewer. Rotten Tomatoes reproduces Tell-Tale TV critic Lara Rosales’s view that “Samuel L. Jackson’s character fits perfectly into the world this franchise is creating.”

What happens to Joanne, Tyson and Spencer?
Dunmire’s threat reaches Joanne
Dunmire’s distillery operation faces pressure from the Montague business, and he sends men after Joanne. The episode ends without resolving her fate, carrying the danger into the season finale. That uncertainty gives the episode a second source of suspense alongside Russell’s decision about Dwight.
Tyson and Spencer keep taking risks
Tyson and Spencer continue their ecstasy venture with supplies from Bodhi. They try to make a deal at a club where they are not welcome, exposing themselves to more trouble. The subplot gives concrete consequences to the “side hustle” in Paramount+’s synopsis: it is not a harmless diversion from Dwight’s liquor business, but another operation creating heat for the people involved.
