Tubi is not a new UK service in 2026. Fox Corporation’s free, ad-supported streamer launched in the UK in July 2024 with more than 20,000 movies and TV episodes. According to Tubi’s latest corporate announcements, its UK catalogue had grown to more than 75,000 movies and TV episodes by July 2026.
That makes Tubi a credible free alternative to paid streaming services, but not a like-for-like replacement for Netflix. You get legal, on-demand viewing without a monthly subscription, while accepting advertising breaks, rotating licences and a less predictable selection of major exclusives.
What is Tubi?
Tubi is a streaming service owned by Fox Corporation. It offers films, television episodes, free live-channel programming where available, and Tubi Originals through an advertising-supported model.
There is no monthly subscription fee, and Tubi says viewers do not need to provide a credit card or payment information. Instead, programmes contain advertising breaks. The service describes its content as legal and licensed from studio, distributor and independent partners.

The UK catalogue is separate from Tubi’s US and Canadian catalogues, so a title available in one country should not be assumed to be available in another.
When did Tubi arrive in the UK?
Tubi announced its UK launch on 1 July 2024, with the marketing campaign beginning on 15 July. The service launched with more than 20,000 movies and TV episodes on demand.
The launch announcement named Disney, Lionsgate, NBCUniversal and Sony Pictures Entertainment among its content partners. It also positioned Tubi Originals and a broad selection of international and catalogue programming as part of the offering.

The UK catalogue has grown substantially
The original “over 20,000” figure is now historical. Tubi’s own announcements describe the following expansion:

These are catalogue figures reported by Tubi, not an independently audited inventory. They also count movies and TV episodes; the number should not be read as 75,000 separate television series or 75,000 major Hollywood films. Streaming licences change, so individual titles can disappear or be added without notice.
Tubi’s 2025 UK expansion announcement cited partners including AMC Networks, Lionsgate, NBCUniversal, New Regency and Sony Pictures Entertainment. Its examples included District 9, Elysium, Ghostbusters (2016), The Mist, The Purge, The Strangers and Death Becomes Her. These were titles cited in the announcement, not a guarantee that every one remains available.

The service’s appeal is breadth rather than a single premium franchise. Its categories include:

For documentary viewers, the true-crime, reality, international and catalogue sections may be especially useful for browsing. However, a large aggregate catalogue does not mean that a particular documentary, film or series will be available when you search for it.

How to watch Tubi in the UK
On a computer or phone browser
- Open the official Tubi UK website.
- Browse categories or search for a title.
- Select the film or episode and start playback.
- Expect advertising breaks during the programme.
On a smart TV, console or streaming device
- Open the device’s official app store.
- Search for Tubi.
- Install the official Tubi app.
- Open the app and select a programme.
- Register or sign in if prompted, or if you want synchronised watch lists and playback across devices.
Tubi’s UK page lists support for web browsers, Android, iPhone and iPad, Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Xfinity X1, Xbox, Samsung Smart TVs, Sony Smart TVs and PlayStation. Availability can depend on the country, app-store region, device model and operating-system version.
If the app does not appear, check that the device’s region is set to the UK, update its software and confirm model compatibility. The browser version is a useful fallback. Do not install unofficial APKs or use mirror websites.
For Roku specifically, Tubi lists a minimum firmware requirement of version 7.7 on its Roku device page. That requirement should not be generalised to other platforms.
Is Tubi really free?
Yes. Tubi says its service and content are free to watch, with no subscription and no credit card required. The cost is advertising: programmes are interrupted by commercial breaks, so the service is not ad-free.

The exact placement and duration of advertising can vary by programme, market and device. Tubi describes its ad load as low, but viewers should treat that as the company’s description rather than a fixed guarantee of a particular number of adverts.
Is Tubi legal?
Tubi says it is a legal streaming service carrying content supplied by studio and independent partners. Use the official website or the official app obtained through your device’s app store. That is different from using pirate streaming websites, unofficial downloads or mirror services, which may expose viewers to copyright and security risks.

Tubi competes with Netflix for viewing time, but “Netflix rival” is shorthand rather than a claim that the two services are equivalent. Netflix is generally chosen for its subscription exclusives and original series. Tubi’s strength is the absence of a monthly bill and its large, varied catalogue of licensed programming.

Who should use Tubi?
Tubi is a strong fit if you want to reduce streaming costs, are comfortable with adverts, enjoy older or cult films, or like exploring genre and international programming. It can also be a useful complement to Netflix: keep a paid service for specific originals and use Tubi when you want free catalogue viewing.

It is a weaker fit if you require ad-free playback, mainly watch current Netflix originals, need guaranteed long-term access to one particular title, or expect a catalogue number to represent thousands of high-profile new releases.
Do you need new hardware?
No. Tubi works through a web browser and is listed for mobile devices, smart TVs, consoles and streaming platforms. A Roku player, Fire TV device or Apple TV may be useful if an older television lacks a compatible app, but buying premium hardware solely to access a free streaming service is unnecessary. Check the official UK compatibility list before purchasing anything.
Verdict
Tubi is an established UK streaming service, not a new August 2026 arrival. It launched in July 2024 with more than 20,000 movies and TV episodes and, according to Tubi, had exceeded 75,000 by July 2026. Its combination of legal access, no subscription fee and broad catalogue makes it worth trying for cost-conscious viewers—but advertising, regional licensing and the lack of a guaranteed Netflix-style originals slate mean it works best as a free complement rather than a complete replacement.
