Donald Trump’s March 11, 2025 defense of Elon Musk was a political and public-relations gesture, not proof that Tesla had been brought down by one organized boycott. Trump called efforts to avoid Tesla “illegal” and said he would buy a new vehicle, but peaceful political boycotts are generally protected expression in the United States. Tesla was also dealing with Model Y production changeovers, stronger competition, an aging product lineup, macroeconomic pressure, and backlash against Musk’s political role.
What Trump said about Tesla and Musk
Early on March 11, 2025, Trump posted on Truth Social that “Radical Left Lunatics” were trying to “illegally and collusively boycott Tesla” to damage Musk and the company. He added that he would buy “a brand new Tesla” as a public show of confidence in Musk.
The intervention came after a brutal session for Tesla shares. Rolling Stone reported that the stock fell 15% on March 10 and was down more than 50% from its late-December peak at the time. That decline was real, but a stock-price move is not the same thing as a measured collapse in vehicle sales. Share prices incorporate expectations about future earnings, investor sentiment, company fundamentals, interest rates, competition, and wider market conditions.
Trump’s statement was followed by a highly visible White House appearance with Musk and several Tesla vehicles. The official White House transcript records Trump saying he intended to buy a Tesla because he considered it a strong product and believed Musk had been treated unfairly.

Trump also said the car would remain at the White House and be used by staff. He explained that he had not driven for a long time and was not permitted to drive. When asked whether his purchase would help Tesla’s sales and stock price, Trump said he hoped it would. That exchange makes the nature of the event clear: it was an overt confidence and publicity gesture rather than an ordinary private car purchase.
The timeline in brief
| Date | What happened | What it does—and does not—show |
|---|---|---|
| March 10, 2025 | Tesla shares fell 15%, according to contemporaneous reporting. | Shows severe investor pressure, not by itself the cause of a sales decline. |
| Early March 11, 2025 | Trump called the Tesla boycott “illegal” and said he would buy a new Tesla. | Shows a political defense of Musk and Tesla; it does not establish that the boycott was unlawful. |
| March 11, 2025 | Trump and Musk appeared with Tesla vehicles at the White House. | Turned the proposed purchase into a public-relations event. |
| April 2, 2025 | Tesla reported 336,681 first-quarter deliveries and described production disruption during Model Y changeovers. | Provides evidence of weak deliveries and operational disruption, but not a single-cause explanation. |
| 2026 | A peer-reviewed study assessed the partisan effects of Musk’s political alignment, while later delivery data showed a substantial rebound. | Supports a mixed interpretation: political backlash mattered, but Tesla’s fortunes were not determined by one boycott alone. |
Was boycotting Tesla actually illegal?
Not as a blanket matter. Peacefully deciding not to buy Tesla, urging other people not to buy Tesla, criticizing Musk, or organizing a political consumer campaign is generally protected by the First Amendment when the conduct involves speech, assembly, association, or petition.
The relevant legal distinction is between the boycott as political expression and conduct that independently breaks the law. The Constitution Annotated’s discussion of political boycotts reflects that distinction: nonviolent collective action can receive constitutional protection, while violence, threats, and unlawful interference do not receive the same protection.
That means the careful version of the claim is:
- Generally protected: refusing to purchase a Tesla, persuading others not to purchase one, criticizing Musk’s politics, or peacefully protesting Tesla.
- Potentially criminal or civilly actionable: vandalism, arson, assault, threats, intimidation, or conduct that independently amounts to unlawful interference or another prohibited commercial arrangement.
It is therefore inaccurate to say that the United States government made a Tesla boycott illegal. It is equally inaccurate to treat every incident connected with anti-Tesla protests as protected speech. A peaceful boycott and an act of property destruction may occur in the same broader controversy, but they are legally and factually different events.

Tesla’s own figures showed a difficult first quarter. In its April 2, 2025 report, the company listed 336,681 vehicle deliveries, consisting of 323,800 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles and 12,881 vehicles from its other model lines.
Tesla also said that Model Y production-line changeovers at all four of its factories caused several weeks of lost production. The redesigned Model Y was still ramping up. In other words, some of the delivery weakness had a straightforward operational explanation: factories were being reconfigured while the company transitioned to a new version of its most important vehicle line.

Tesla’s 2024 Form 10-K had already identified a broad set of risks that could affect demand and profitability. They included cyclical automotive demand, inflation, interest rates, political and regulatory uncertainty, competition, tariffs, supply constraints, and production ramps. The filing also anticipated disruption during the first quarter of 2025 as the new Model Y launched worldwide.
Political backlash was another plausible factor. Reuters reported that first-quarter deliveries fell 13% year over year and attributed the weakness to a combination of backlash against Musk’s politics, increasing competition, and an aging lineup. Reuters also reported sharp declines in several European markets.

Those facts support saying that Musk’s political activity contributed to Tesla’s problems or coincided with a deterioration in the brand. They do not prove that one centrally organized boycott was the sole cause of the stock decline or delivery decline.
Why the stock market story and the sales story are different
The phrase “boycott tanked Tesla” compresses several different measurements into one conclusion.
Share price: Tesla’s stock can fall because investors expect weaker future demand, lower margins, greater competition, production problems, or reputational damage. The price can move before those risks appear in quarterly delivery numbers.
Deliveries: Tesla reports vehicles delivered to customers, not a perfect real-time measure of every purchase decision or every order in the pipeline. Deliveries can be affected by production timing, shipping, factory retooling, regional inventory, and quarter-end logistics.

Brand sentiment: A consumer may dislike Musk’s politics without joining a formal boycott. Another buyer may remain interested in a Tesla but postpone a purchase because of price, financing costs, vehicle availability, or a preference for a newer competing model. Those choices can affect demand without belonging to one identifiable campaign.
This is why the March 2025 share-price fall should not automatically be translated into “the boycott caused Tesla sales to collapse.” The evidence points to overlapping causes rather than a single demonstrated mechanism.
Which Tesla did Trump enter?
The White House transcript identifies the vehicle Trump entered as a Tesla Model S Plaid. The display included multiple Tesla models, so the event was not simply a presentation of one generic “new Tesla.” The Model S Plaid is the specific vehicle documented in the official record.
There is also an important wording distinction. Trump said he intended to purchase a Tesla and described how it would be used at the White House. The available event record establishes the pledge and the public appearance; it does not, by itself, establish that a completed private transaction took place afterward.
Ownership context: the Model S Plaid shown at the White House
Readers interested in the vehicle itself can browse Tesla Model S accessories, including interior organizers, floor protection, and charging or cable-storage products. Compatibility varies by Model S version and model year, so any product listing should be checked against the exact vehicle configuration. This is an ownership reference—not an argument that anyone should buy a Tesla because of Trump’s statement.
Did Trump’s purchase boost Tesla?
There is no evidence in the supplied record that Trump’s proposed purchase materially improved Tesla’s sales or share price. Trump said he hoped it would help, but hope is not an outcome measure.
A single high-profile purchase can generate publicity and may influence short-term sentiment. It cannot demonstrate a durable change in consumer demand. Nor can the White House appearance establish that political support reversed the damage associated with Musk’s public role.

The later trajectory is more complicated than the 2025 headline suggested. By July 2026, Tesla reported 480,126 deliveries for the preceding three-month period, compared with 384,122 in the same period a year earlier—a 25% increase. The Associated Press and Washington Post described the rebound as possible evidence that the worst of the Musk-related backlash had eased, while also noting that U.S. sales remained weak according to Cox Automotive estimates.

What did Musk’s politics do to the Tesla brand?
The strongest case for a political effect is not that every Tesla buyer joined an organized boycott. It is that Musk’s political identity became difficult to separate from the Tesla brand for some consumers.
A 2026 peer-reviewed study of the “Tesla Takedown” campaign concluded that the sales deterioration following Musk’s political alignment appeared to reflect brand aversion among Democratic consumers outweighing any new affinity among Republican consumers. That finding supports the idea of a partisan consumer effect, but it remains an analytical interpretation of the data—not proof that every lost sale, protest, or quarterly decline resulted from boycott activity.
The political effect also operated alongside ordinary automotive pressures. Tesla faced competitors with newer or broader electric-vehicle lineups, a product range that some analysts characterized as aging, factory disruption during the Model Y transition, interest-rate pressure, and uncertainty affecting the wider auto market.

Supported
- Trump publicly defended Musk and Tesla on March 11, 2025.
- He called a boycott by “Radical Left Lunatics” illegal and collusive.
- He said he would buy a new Tesla and appeared with Musk at the White House.
- The vehicle he entered was identified in the official transcript as a Model S Plaid.
- Tesla was experiencing a sharp stock decline and weak first-quarter deliveries.
- Backlash against Musk’s politics was plausibly one contributor to the brand and sales problems.
- Production changeovers, competition, product timing, and macroeconomic conditions were also material factors.
- Tesla later reported a substantial delivery rebound in 2026, even as U.S. demand remained a concern.
Not established
- That peaceful consumer boycotts of Tesla were categorically illegal.
- That one organized boycott alone caused the stock decline.
- That Trump’s appearance produced a measurable, lasting sales boost.
- That every protest-related incident was part of a boycott rather than separate criminal conduct.
- That the public pledge necessarily means Trump completed the purchase.
The documentary takeaway
The March 2025 White House event is best understood as a collision between politics, celebrity-style publicity, consumer identity, and financial markets. Trump used a vehicle purchase—or proposed purchase—as a visible defense of Musk. Musk’s political activity had made Tesla’s brand more polarizing, but the company’s business results were also shaped by factory transitions, vehicle launches, competition, interest rates, and demand conditions.

The most defensible conclusion is therefore narrower than the original slogan: Musk’s politics likely contributed to Tesla’s difficulties among some consumers, while the evidence does not show that a single liberal boycott alone “tanked” the company.
Evidence trail: The account relies on contemporaneous reporting and archived copies of Trump’s Truth Social post; the official White House transcript of the March 11 appearance; Tesla’s April 2, 2025 delivery report; Tesla’s 2024 Form 10-K; Reuters reporting on first-quarter deliveries and European markets; reporting by the Associated Press and Washington Post on the 2026 rebound; the U.S. Constitution Annotated’s discussion of political boycotts; and a 2026 peer-reviewed study of the Tesla Takedown campaign.
Frequently Asked Questions
Did Trump actually buy the Tesla he promised to purchase?
The White House event record shows that Trump said he intended to buy a Tesla and that it would remain at the White House for staff use. It does not, by itself, prove that the proposed transaction was completed.
Was a peaceful boycott of Tesla illegal?
Generally, no. Peacefully refusing to buy Tesla, encouraging others to do the same, and criticizing Musk are generally protected political expression. Threats, assault, arson, vandalism, intimidation, and other independently unlawful conduct are separate matters.
Which Tesla model did Trump enter at the White House?
The official White House transcript identifies it as a Tesla Model S Plaid. Several Tesla vehicles were displayed, so the event involved more than one model.
Did the boycott cause Tesla’s sales decline?
Political backlash against Musk was plausibly one contributor, and later research found evidence of partisan brand aversion. Tesla also faced Model Y production changeovers, competition, an aging lineup, interest-rate and demand pressures, and other operational factors. The evidence does not establish that one boycott alone caused the decline.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Trump’s Tesla appearance was a public show of support for Elon Musk during a period of falling shares, protests, and weak deliveries. His claim that the boycott was “illegal” was too broad: peaceful political boycotts are generally protected, while violence and property crimes are not. Tesla’s subsequent rebound reinforces the more cautious explanation—politics mattered, but it was one factor in a larger business and market story.
