In an April 29, 2025, interview, Trump defended the image after ABC News correspondent Terry Moran challenged the lettering. That public exchange shows Trump insisting on the image’s interpretation; it cannot establish what he privately believed or what he had been told.
What was real in the image—and what was added?
The distinction is between the photograph and an annotation on it. A fact-check reported that the underlying photograph showed Abrego Garcia’s hand, while the letters “MS-13” were added to the version Trump displayed. They were not a fifth tattoo visible in the underlying photograph.
The four tattoo designs were described as a marijuana leaf, a smiley face, a cross, and a skull. The Washington Post characterized the writing as an annotation that suggested an interpretation of those designs. Other photographs described by Fox News also showed the four tattoos without the lettering.
What did Trump say when Terry Moran challenged it?
During an April 29, 2025, interview with ABC News correspondent Terry Moran, Trump defended the image after Moran challenged the “MS-13” lettering. The reports reviewed describe the exchange but do not supply a complete primary-source transcript, so this account does not present a verbatim quotation.

Trump’s public defense is evidence of the position he took in that interview. It does not prove his private state of mind, establish what he knew before the exchange, or show who prepared or gave him the annotated image. The cited reporting does not identify who added the lettering or precisely how the image reached him.
Does the photograph prove Abrego Garcia was affiliated with MS-13?
No. The fact-check says the designs visible on the hand do not, by themselves, demonstrate gang affiliation. The added “MS-13” label is an interpretation placed on the photograph, not independent evidence of membership.

The image should therefore be kept separate from the broader question of Abrego Garcia’s status or any alleged affiliations. A photograph of tattoos—and especially an annotation added to that photograph—cannot alone settle those questions.

How to assess the claim
- Separate the photograph from its markup. The hand appears in the genuine underlying photograph; “MS-13” was added to the version Trump displayed.
- Distinguish description from interpretation. The four designs were described as a marijuana leaf, smiley face, cross, and skull. The lettering asserts a meaning; it is not itself a photographed tattoo.
- Keep the conclusion within the evidence. The tattoos alone do not establish gang affiliation, and the available reporting does not establish who made the annotation.
