Their situations are not interchangeable. Nami’s “betrayal” concealed a deal meant to protect her village, Usopp left after an open argument over the Going Merry, Robin surrendered herself to save her companions, and Sanji went with Big Mom’s forces to keep danger away from everyone else. Each case ended with the character returning, being rescued or reconciling with the crew.
What counts as leaving the Straw Hat crew?
This list covers deliberate departures or apparent resignations in which a Straw Hat separates from the crew because of a personal decision, coercive bargain or protective sacrifice. It does not count a kidnapping by itself, losing contact during a battle, traveling on another route, or being temporarily separated by an outside power. The four cases below are the best-supported examples in the story’s official arc summaries; they are not presented as an official exhaustive count of every brief separation.
Why did Nami leave the Straw Hats?
What happened
In the East Blue, Nami takes the Going Merry and the crew’s treasure, then disappears. When she later meets Luffy, she says she had approached him for money—“近づいたのは金のため” (“I got close for the money”). On the surface, it looks like a calculated betrayal.
Her real motive
Nami is secretly bound to Arlong. After Arlong kills her adoptive mother, Bellemere, Nami agrees to work for him in exchange for a promise that she can buy the freedom of Cocoyashi Village. She steals and saves money for that purpose. Arlong breaks the agreement and takes the money, leaving Nami trapped and desperate. Her apparent departure is therefore an attempt to protect her village under coercion, not a rejection of the Straw Hats.

How it is resolved
Nami finally asks Luffy for help. The Straw Hats defeat Arlong and destroy the control he holds over her and Cocoyashi. Nami then joins the crew as a genuine member. Her case is best described as a concealed protective sacrifice that ends in liberation and a true return.
Why did Usopp leave the crew?
What happened in Water Seven
The Going Merry is judged too damaged to continue safely. Luffy decides that the crew must obtain a new ship. Usopp, already carrying guilt because the money intended for repairs was lost, cannot accept abandoning the Merry. His attachment to the ship is bound up with his fear that he is also becoming expendable.
The dispute with Luffy
Unlike Nami’s hidden arrangement, Usopp’s conflict is explicit. He declares that he is leaving and challenges Luffy for the right to keep the Merry. Luffy wins the duel, but he leaves the ship with Usopp. Usopp is no longer traveling as a Straw Hat at that point; he has chosen a break over a decision he considers an admission of defeat.

How it is resolved
After the events surrounding Water Seven and Enies Lobby, Usopp apologizes and asks to be accepted back. The crew welcomes him. His departure ends through reconciliation rather than a rescue: the disagreement must be acknowledged before he can return.
Why did Robin leave the Straw Hats?
What happened in Water Seven
Nico Robin tells the crew that she will not return and leaves with CP9. Her words are presented as a final separation: “もうあなた達の所へは戻らないわ……….” (“I will not return to you anymore…,” in the official Japanese summary).
Why she sacrificed herself
Robin believes that the World Government’s threat will reach the Straw Hats through her. By surrendering, she hopes to prevent a Buster Call and spare her companions. She conceals that protective motive, making the departure look voluntary even though she is acting under overwhelming pressure.

Enies Lobby and the rescue
The crew refuses to abandon her and confronts the government at Enies Lobby. Robin initially rejects their rescue, still convinced that her existence endangers them. When she finally says “生きたい” (“I want to live”), she accepts their help and the possibility of a future with them. Robin’s case is a rescue from a self-imposed sacrifice, followed by a lasting return.
Why did Sanji leave the crew at Zou?
What happened
After the crew reaches Zou, Sanji leaves with forces connected to Big Mom. He promises that he will return, but the separation is not a quarrel like Usopp’s and is not a freely chosen new allegiance.
Sanji’s protective calculation
Sanji acts alone because he fears Big Mom’s reach will extend to the people around him. Going with the threat is, in his mind, a way to keep the Straw Hats and the people of Zou from becoming targets. His decision combines coercion with a deliberate attempt to shield others.

Luffy’s response
Luffy refuses to treat Sanji’s departure as final. He decides to go to the tea party and bring him back. The important distinction is that Sanji is not leaving because he has stopped valuing the crew; he is trying to absorb the danger himself. His storyline therefore resolves as a recovery mission rather than a simple apology after an internal dispute.

| Straw Hat | What the departure looked like | Underlying motive | Did the crew understand immediately? | Resolution |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nami | Took the ship and treasure and vanished | Protect Cocoyashi from Arlong and buy its freedom | No; she concealed the coercion | Arlong was defeated; Nami returned as a true member |
| Usopp | Declared he was leaving and fought Luffy for the Merry | Grief, guilt and attachment to the ship after the repair decision | Yes; the argument was open | Usopp apologized and reconciled with the crew |
| Robin | Said she would not return and surrendered to CP9 | Draw danger away from the Straw Hats and prevent a Buster Call | No; she hid her self-sacrifice | The crew rescued her at Enies Lobby after she chose to live |
| Sanji | Left Zou with Big Mom’s forces after promising to return | Keep Big Mom’s threat from reaching his friends and allies | Not fully; Luffy had to pursue him | Luffy organized a mission to bring him back |
The pattern behind every major departure
These episodes use “leaving” to test what membership means. Nami and Robin make protective choices that their friends initially misread. Usopp’s break is the clearest internal conflict: he leaves because he cannot accept the crew’s decision about the Merry and returns only after confronting his own pride. Sanji’s separation is driven by an outside power, but his instinct is again to protect the others by carrying the danger himself.
In all four stories, the crew’s response matters as much as the departure. Luffy does not reduce Nami to her apparent betrayal, accepts Robin’s plea to live, recognizes that Usopp’s apology is necessary, and treats Sanji’s promise to return as a reason to pursue him rather than permission to move on. A temporary absence becomes a permanent exit only if the relationship is abandoned; in these core cases, the Straw Hats keep choosing one another.
