Jane Curtin and Laraine Newman honored Gilda Radner at the end of NBC’s 2025 Saturday Night Live 50th-anniversary special by holding up a black-and-white photograph of their late castmate. The visual tribute came during the closing good-nights, bringing three members of the show’s original cast together in a moment focused on Radner’s place in its history.
What Curtin and Newman did for Gilda Radner
As the special ended, Curtin and Newman held up a black-and-white photograph of Radner during the closing good-nights. The Los Angeles Times reported the moment and identified both women among the attendees. No verified direct remarks from Curtin or Newman accompanied the tribute, so its meaning is clearest in the gesture itself: they made Radner visible in the anniversary’s final moments.
Why the tribute connected to SNL’s beginnings
Radner, Curtin and Newman were members of the original Not Ready for Prime Time Players, the cast that introduced Saturday Night Live when it premiered on Oct. 11, 1975. Peacock’s official anniversary listing names Curtin and Newman among participating former cast members and identifies Radner as part of the premiere cast. The 2025 event marked 50 years since that first broadcast.
Their tribute therefore linked the closing of the anniversary special to the ensemble that launched the program. Radner died in 1989; the photograph offered a visual remembrance rather than a live appearance or archival performance.
What the SNL50 special covered
NBC presented the anniversary as a three-hour special celebrating five decades of Saturday Night Live. NBCUniversal said the program would include “untold stories behind the culture-defining, groundbreaking and news-making musical performances, sketches and cameos of the past 50 years.” The Radner tribute was one personal moment within a wider retrospective of the show’s performers and history.
