Donald Trump publicly celebrated CBS’s decision to cancel The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, but the available evidence does not establish that he caused the cancellation. CBS announced the show would end in May 2026, calling the move a financial decision. The timing—after Colbert criticized Paramount’s $16 million settlement with Trump and while a Paramount–Skydance merger awaited regulatory approval—prompted questions about political influence, but timing alone does not prove motive.
What happened to The Late Show with Stephen Colbert?
CBS announced on July 17, 2025, that The Late Show with Stephen Colbert would end in May 2026. The network also said it would retire The Late Show franchise rather than continue it with another host. CBS described the cancellation as “purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night,” according to CBS News.
The announcement and the end of the program were separate events: CBS made the decision public in July 2025, while the final season continued through May 2026.
How did Trump react?
Trump celebrated the cancellation. Reuters, in reporting carried by Investing.com, quoted him saying, “I absolutely love that Colbert got fired,” and adding, “I hear Jimmy Kimmel is next.” The remarks were reported as social-media wording; the quotations are attributed here to Reuters via Investing.com.

After Colbert’s final broadcast in May 2026, Trump again attacked late-night hosts, describing Colbert’s departure as the “‘Beginning of the End’ for untalented, nasty, highly overpaid, not funny, and very poorly rated Late Night Television Hosts,” according to Variety.
Why did the timing raise questions?
Shortly before CBS announced the cancellation, Colbert criticized Paramount’s $16 million settlement with Trump over a lawsuit concerning a 60 Minutes interview, calling it a “big fat bribe.” That phrase was Colbert’s characterization, not an established finding about the settlement. Paramount was also awaiting regulatory approval for its merger with Skydance.

The close timing led critics and lawmakers to question whether the settlement or pending merger had any connection to the show’s cancellation. The Associated Press and The Washington Post reported on the dispute and the sequence of events. CBS, by contrast, maintained that the decision was financial.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does the evidence show that Trump or the merger caused the cancellation?
No. The documented sequence establishes that Colbert criticized the settlement shortly before CBS announced the cancellation, that Paramount’s merger was pending, and that Trump welcomed the decision. It does not establish that Trump pressured CBS, that CBS acted to secure merger approval, or that either event caused the cancellation. CBS’s stated explanation was financial, and the public disagreement over that explanation is not proof of another motive.

Contemporary reporting described the program as the most-watched late-night show on U.S. broadcast television. That ranking does not, by itself, show whether the show was profitable. No sufficiently verified figure for the program’s losses is established in the cited reporting, so a precise loss estimate should not be treated as fact.
